Among the most underrated and unexpected anime I’ve seen lately, this blend of science fiction, psychological suspense, mystery, and horror is one of the best recommendations I have for you. Based on the novel of the same name by Yusuke Kishi, From the New World is an animated adaptation produced by the studio A-1 Pictures. Discover one of the most bleak, tragic, and dangerous dystopian futures in the world of anime.

Plot
The anime begins by showing us different parts of the big city of Tokyo, Japan, where we see a young high school student, a driver, and other people there bringing everything to a halt, only to later kill people in a horrific way—somehow using their minds. Next, we see a small group of kids watching the sunset together as they play and night falls. They talk about the dangers of being out of their homes at that time of night, while a song plays in the background, sounding like some kind of alarm. One member of this group, Saki Watanabe, wakes up one day with the ability to control the matter around her, and her parents are delighted by this.
Trama

We’re continuing this “Month of Horror” special with anime that are supposed to have a terrifying tone or style and aren’t suitable for all audiences. As I mentioned before, I even made a list of some anime I plan to watch and review for you this October. But finding a balance between all the things I have to do, watch, and write lately has set me back a bit. That’s why I’m finding it harder now to watch an anime that’s longer than 12 episodes, as is the case with From the New World, which has 25 episodes. However, all the time I spent watching it was completely worth it.
I was expecting an anime with a horror vibe somewhat similar to other series that blend this genre with elements of science fiction or dark fantasy—like The Promised Neverland, for example. But what I found here might actually be even better than that other anime, at least in terms of story and narrative. Yes, it has its own unique blend of horror, science fiction, and even mystery and psychological suspense; but the way it balances all of this is excellent, as each episode offers both context and surprises—and elements that draw you deeper and deeper into the story until you reach its grand finale.

"From the New World" isn't an anime that simply aims to scare you with a couple of jump scares, monsters from the depths of hell, or anything else typical of the horror genre. In reality, this anime aims to make you doubt even the very integrity of humanity and its own existence. It doesn’t terrify you, but it does unsettle you with a distant, dystopian, and quite dangerous future led by a society of humans who possess psychic powers that make them superior to any other species—yet also render them quite dangerous.
We also see, in the background, an elitist and tightly controlled society that psychologically manipulates its people—especially children and teenagers—so they won’t remember anything that might upset their emotions and make them potentially dangerous to themselves. We also see a whole mystique surrounding this District 66, known as Kamisu, and its leaders, who use somewhat questionable and dangerous methods to “eradicate” any sign of “weakness” among their teenage and young adult students. The main horror lies in the way they control and eliminate classmates and acquaintances in a cold and calculating manner.

Imagine living in a society like that, where the weak are not forgiven but are erased from existence and from the memories of their friends, acquaintances, and even their own family members. But that’s not all—the more episodes we watch, the more we realize what the very past of this story reveals about the origins of this controlling, supremacist society. In reality, you don’t have to watch that many episodes to realize this truth—after watching just the first three episodes, you can get a sense of everything that lies behind what we see and know in this anime.
At first, you might expect this anime to scare you with some monster lurking around young people at night or something like that. But what we end up feeling is suspense and overwhelming terror at the way humanity itself has become in this distant, post-apocalyptic future. What fascinated me most about all of this is the meaning of “demons” and “karma demons,” which is fascinating if we analyze it in depth alongside the origins of all these societies and monarchies. When they start talking about this, the young protagonists imagine a dangerous entity that dwells outside the Boundary Zone.

But after several traumatic episodes and events, we realize that, in the end, the “demons” this elitist society refers to are actually human beings with psychic powers who were capable of murdering both consciously and unconsciously. Intriguing, don’t you think? That the very demons are actually uncontrolled humans and dangerous murderers. But the most ironic part of all this is seeing how this district—the town where everything we see in the 25 episodes of the anime takes place—ends up losing control and even its position as leaders and “gods” to a species that they themselves controlled and exploited.
Here we dive deeper into another significant part of the story we see in this anime, but the most I can tell you without giving away spoilers is that humans aren’t the only “intelligent” beings that exist in this post-apocalyptic world. Another thing that really fascinates me about this anime is how its story and plot reveal elements that are too complex, dark, and profound to be ignored: mind control, manipulation, eradication, destruction, wars, anarchy, and much more. What seems to start as a story about young people experiencing strange and unsettling things ends up becoming an all-out war for survival and supremacy.

The anime also makes you reflect quite a bit on various topics, such as society itself and the ways its leaders manipulate and control people to eradicate all thoughts and acts of rebellion and confrontation. It also makes us reflect on what truly makes us human and how we differ from other species that are governed solely by basic laws of survival. There’s even a contrast between this and another species we’ll see a lot of in this anime, and how they demonstrate progress, development, and intellect comparable to that of a human being.
We also witness how different species have evolved in this desolate, polluted, and dangerous world to become perfect predators of humans with psychic powers. The way in which the environment—including flora and fauna—ultimately affects the traces left behind by this mysterious psychic power that humans possess is also something that really makes us think. Honestly, I haven’t seen another anime that’s as well-written, elaborate, and developed as this one. I’m quite surprised that it isn’t a better-known anime, though I can see why—due to certain sexual content and material that isn’t suitable for all audiences.

The anime takes its time introducing and developing the various characters who make up Group 1 of District 66, of which our protagonist is a part. Aside from everything we’ve discussed above, the anime also delves deeply into the daily lives of these young characters—their problems, concerns, and individual and collective thoughts about this society and the decisions of its leaders. We can feel the fear, anguish, doubt, anger, and sadness that they express and convey to us throughout the anime. Another thing worth noting is how the anime takes its time with each event or situation our protagonists find themselves in.
The individual characters manage to stand out in one way or another, and they also have certain relationships that we see develop throughout the anime. We also see some same-sex relationships, though they don’t really extend beyond a single episode of significance or prominence. There are almost no nude scenes or unnecessary Fanservice. There is indeed some gore, and the anime’s high production quality even elevates these scenes with a sense of tension and horror in a very unique and somewhat creative way. The animation itself isn’t too bad either, considering it aired over ten years ago.

A-1 Pictures was barely making a name for itself back then, but it delivered a fairly acceptable and noteworthy level of animation and production. Sure, the grayish color palette, low contrast, and lack of detail in some scenes are a bit questionable, but it’s no big deal. The character designs aren’t too bad; the art style and animation manage to maintain a quality and fluidity that’s clearly evident, and the use of light and shadow is excellent. The sound effects also stand out very, very well, though they’re nothing compared to this anime’s excellent soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the psychological thriller, science fiction, mystery, drama, and horror genres.
