Plot

The movie begins one night in a suburban house where two girls dressed as schoolgirls are watching TV to see if there’s anything interesting on. However, one of them starts talking about trivia and conspiracy theories related to television and how they influence people’s minds. Her friend interrupts her to tell her an urban legend about a VHS tape: whoever watches it is cursed to die seven days later. After Becca tells her this, Katie says, frightened, that she watched that tape the previous weekend with her boyfriend and some other kids at a cabin in the mountains.

I’m going to be honest with you about this: I hardly remembered seeing this movie before. I’m talking about when I was a kid or a preteen—that was the time when I ended up watching a lot of horror movies. The one I remember watching the most—and which I’ll never forget for obvious reasons—is The Grudge, a similar supernatural horror film that’s actually an American remake of a Japanese horror movie. But from what I’ve read recently, The Ring was the movie that kicked off this whole phenomenon of Hollywood adapting Asian horror films or works.

I don’t always end up liking these kinds of movies all that much because they always follow a certain pattern—both in their story and in the way they end. It’s really hard to say that a supernatural horror movie has truly captivated me with its ending. But then again, that doesn’t mean it’s never happened—last week I shared a very special movie with you that really did captivate me with its ending. But enough about other movies—let’s talk about The Ring, a film that’s a remake of a Japanese movie based on a novel, which in turn is based on an urban legend.

Obviously, what we see in this American version is very different from what you might see in the Japanese version. They represent two very different sides of the world, with vastly different perspectives on spirits, ghosts, and curses. I’ll tell you right now that I’m very curious to see the Japanese version because of certain details in the story. But it’s not like I completely reject this American version of The Ring either, since it has done a great job of conveying that sense of fear, suspense, and horror that you normally look for in a movie of this style.

Anyway, in short, the movie is about Rachel Keller, a journalist who decides to investigate the cause of her older sister’s daughter’s death. She begins by discovering that Katie wasn’t the only girl who died that night—her boyfriend and the two other friends Katie went to the cabin with that weekend also died at the same time, on the same day. When she travels to that cabin in the mountains, she discovers that among a very small selection of movies, there’s a VHS tape with no title or cover that stands out from the rest.

Our reporter Rachel decides to spend the night in the same cabin where the kids stayed last week and watch the same tape they claim to have seen. After watching it, she immediately receives an unexpected call in which she hears a little girl’s whisper telling her, “seven days.” Now Rachel will have to uncover the origin of that tape and what it’s trying to hide among its images and symbols. It’s fair to say that the film strikes a balance between suspense and mystery that carries the viewer through its nearly two-hour runtime.

However, when it comes to delivering horror, the film succeeds only in very few moments. It doesn’t overuse jump scares, though that doesn’t mean it doesn’t use them at all. The same goes for gore, which is very sparse; instead, it relies on settings, images, and entities that evoke unease, fear, and horror. The Ring begins as a story about a dark curse that haunts a videotape and anyone who watches it. But as the minutes pass and the story unfolds with one revelation after another, the film transforms into a tragic and dark tale with a rather sad ending.

At one point in the movie, we even find ourselves feeling a certain amount of pity and compassion for a mysterious character in this dark story. But this happens right before the ending—an ending that generally satisfies the audience, though personally, it doesn’t quite convince me, precisely because of those final minutes. It’s an ending that makes it clear: yes, this is a horror movie—a scary one. On the other hand, it’s an open ending that doesn’t fully resolve the questions I have about the spirit behind the curse that haunts our protagonists in this film.

But before I share those concerns, I want to make it very clear that I like the movie. At least for what it has to offer—which is no small thing, since it compensates for its predictable plot and underdeveloped characters with audiovisual production of very high quality for its time. Those two hours didn’t drag at all; the film had a good pace and one plot twist after another right up to its fascinating ending. It’s no surprise that the film became a huge hit in its day, in addition to earning very positive reviews from critics and the general public.

However, there are aspects of the plot that really puzzle me—such as what exactly made the entity inhabiting that tape so dangerous. We’re talking about a person who died an “unjust” death and, because of that, has become a curse that haunts people. But based on everything we see and discover throughout the film, it leads us to believe that this person—who died and became a curse—was already quite dangerous even while alive. We’re given no information about their true origin or what it was that they had.

Because of this, the ending ends up creating more confusion than satisfaction, since it doesn’t tie anything up—quite the opposite, in fact. We’re led to see this curse as something that’s impossible to eliminate or ignore, which makes it a bit generic, in my opinion. Among the characters we get to know here, there isn’t a single one who stands out as much as those who appear least on screen. The protagonist does a great job fulfilling her role as the typical horror movie heroine who tries to solve a case by investigating and gathering all the necessary information.

But honestly, there’s not much else to say about this unremarkable cast. On the other hand, the same can’t be said about its audiovisual aspects, which I believe really set it apart from everything else. The art direction and production are top-notch, especially thanks to the shots and cinematographic styles it employs—aerial shots, moving cameras, transitions, and so on. That said, the cool color palette, dark tones, and abundance of shadows and low lighting are truly outstanding. The atmosphere in most scenes is particularly remarkable, as it strikes a perfect balance with the emotions the film conveys.

Cinematography isn’t the only standout aspect of this film; the same goes for the visual effects, which are very impressive for the era in which it was produced. Both practical and computer-generated visual effects are very well done, especially toward the end, where you can really appreciate them. The film doesn’t rely heavily on CGI, which is excellent. The sound effects aren’t bad either; in fact, they deliver fascinating results in tense and frightening scenes in a spectacular way. But nothing is more spectacular than the film’s soundtrack itself.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the suspense, mystery, and supernatural horror genres.

Saludos. !BBH
