Thir13en Ghosts (2001) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Hello, center fans. What I’m bringing you today is NOT a recommendation, but a movie that definitely shouldn’t have been made. A film that played a small part in my childhood, despite how terrible it is in many ways—which I’ll explain below. Based on the 1960 classic 13 Ghosts by William Castle, Thir13en Ghosts was directed by Steve Beck and stars Tony Shalhoub, Embeth Davidtz, Matthew Lillard, Shannon Elizabeth, and others. Get ready for the worst ghost movie I’ve ever seen.

Plot

The movie begins at a junkyard in the middle of the night, where a group of cars and a truck arrive. The occupants prepare themselves with somewhat strange equipment and outfits, while a man with a mustache, a suit, and a cane forces his companion to tell him where whatever they’re looking for is located. The companion gives directions while suffering an epileptic seizure and writhing on the ground. We then see how an invisible entity begins to chase and brutally kill everyone at the scene until it is finally trapped inside a fully armored glass cube. However, almost everyone dies in the attempt to capture this dangerous specter.

Trama

I have to make it very clear from the start that this isn't a movie I'd personally recommend, since it seems like the people who—supposedly—read my posts can't tell the difference between when I'm speaking positively about a movie and when I'm giving a negative review. Maybe I should make that clear right in the title, but oh well, let’s just leave it at that. This movie I’m bringing you today is one of those I would have preferred to have forgotten completely ever since I was a clueless kid—seriously. However, since I remembered even its blessed name, I added it to the list, watched it, and here we are.

Now that I think about it, the reason I remember it is because it always used to air on TV right before another horror movie I really love—and one I do recommend you watch—was broadcast. It’s called Jeepers Creepers, and it’s one of the first horror movies I ever reviewed on my Hive Blog. But anyway, getting back to Thir13en Ghosts, I admit that I haven’t suffered as much with any other movie as I did with this one during its hour and a half runtime. Maybe age or the experience of watching and talking about movies has made me more demanding when it comes to watching a movie—I don’t know.

But be warned: the premise is intriguing, as it blends supernatural elements with horror, psychics, and things from the afterlife. However, the execution—or the way the story unfolds—is terrible in many ways. Worst of all, you can really tell just from watching the first few minutes that they poured a huge budget into this movie back then. The introduction seems like anything but that of a ghost horror movie—seriously. And I don’t mean to criticize the director’s work, but, honestly, what on earth was he trying to do here?

We see what appears to be a character who could easily be the villain of an action thriller, complete with his cane, in the middle of a junkyard with a specialized team hunting ghosts in a rather pathetic way, to be honest. Next, we’re introduced to the film’s true protagonists: Arthur Kriticos’s family, who have recently suffered the tragic loss of their mother and wife and are living in a small apartment with their nanny. One day, they’re visited by a lawyer representing Arthur’s uncle—the same man in a suit from the beginning named Cyrus—who has bequeathed them a rather strange house.

The movie focuses almost entirely on this house—or mansion—with reinforced glass walls and Latin inscriptions. On top of that, the house is filled with jewels and rooms, but what’s really interesting is what’s in the basement. We’ll follow Arthur’s family as they explore the house and discover that they’re not actually alone—and that 12 very dangerous ghosts are trapped in this strange place. As I said, the premise is appealing, but by the time you finish watching it, you’ll be completely disappointed. Not only that, but it might even make you want to throw up.

I’m referring to its audiovisual aspects, which feature certain visual effects that are repeated over and over and over again throughout the movie. This has even caused seizures, which gives you an idea of just how exhausting it is visually. But anyway, we’ll get back to the audiovisual effects later; first, I want to make it very clear that the movie wasn’t just exhausting—even though it only lasts an hour and a half—but it’s also stressful because of the terrible script, the painfully slow scenes, the absurd plot twists, and the incredibly generic ending, which was the worst part. The acting isn’t much better, to be honest.

I have nothing against the cast of this movie, but Tony Shalhoub is the only one who really stands out as the lead. Oh, and Matthew Lillard—whose performance mostly consists of having fits, convulsions, and screaming all the time. Anyway, there’s not much to say about the acting, except that the “antagonist” in this movie only knows how to spout typical action-movie villain lines—seriously. Much of the movie doesn’t help much either, since if it’s supposed to be about ghosts and horror, it isn’t scary at all.

Mind you, it has gore, blood, the occasional graphic death, and ghosts with somewhat grotesque appearances. But even with elaborate makeup, visual effects, and jump-scare-style camera angles and cuts, it doesn’t generate the fear you’d expect, honestly. But then again, it’s not like you can expect much from a movie that goes way overboard with slow-motion shots, lighting, visual effects, and the like. The director does everything they can with the audiovisual elements, but it ends up feeling more like a suspenseful, supernatural thriller than a horror movie per se.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few scary moments—though they only last a couple of minutes, compared to over an hour of suspense, slow-motion shots with lots of lights, and cuts and transitions that make you pretty dizzy. Other than that, the ghost designs, the makeup, the house set design, and the computer-generated visual effects aren’t that bad, to be honest. It’s a shame to see how they’ve wasted so many millions of dollars on a movie with such a dismal script and direction. So, if you want to watch a horror movie that isn’t scary but might give you seizures because of its exhausting visual effects, then here’s this movie (just kidding).

Personally, I give it a 5/10 rating as far as the supernatural horror and suspense genres are concerned.
