Plot

The anime begins with a very common case of manipulation and bullying faced by our young protagonist, Mayumi Hashimoto, a high school student who lost the money she had been given to use for school expenses. Her classmate, Aya Kuroda, takes advantage of the situation by “lending” her the money she lost in order to bully her and demand repayment every day, all while using the money to go out with boys at night. On top of this, Mayumi also secretly steals money from her parents. One day, she hears a rumor at school about a website where you can type in the name of anyone you want and send them to hell.

Honestly, I admit that I no longer have the stamina I used to have for watching anime. Either that, or the fact that trying to watch a series with more than 24 episodes in such a short amount of time is simply impossible for me because of my terrible schedule. However, here we are with a new option that’s perfect for “Month of Horror”—especially if you like classic anime, you’ll be fascinated by this audiovisual gem called Hell Girl, also known as Jigoku Shōjo. Until very recently, when I finally got around to watching it, I admit it sounded very familiar to me, and now I realize why.

I don’t know if what I’m about to say is an exaggeration, but this might be one of the most popular supernatural horror anime out there. This is likely because it aired at a time when the anime industry was just beginning to gain worldwide recognition. We’re talking about the early 2000s, a time when the internet wasn’t as common or accessible as it is now. Even so, considering how popular it is, I expected it to be something very different from what I ended up watching over the last 36 hours. Don’t get me wrong—I admit I did like the anime, but not entirely.

Even though I admit I’m a huge fan of both anime and horror, there are certain types of shows that, honestly, I have a really hard time watching. One of these types of series is the kind that has a fairly predictable plot from start to finish. And that’s exactly the case with Hell Girl, which, from its very first episode, makes it clear that the series as a whole follows a structure and plotline that’s easy to follow and predict. Every episode (or at least most of them) tells the tragic story of a person suffering from some form of injustice, mistreatment, violence, abuse, and so on.

This victim of the evil and cruelty in this world directs their hatred toward a single person, which leads to their immediate contact with the “Hell Forum,” a website available only to those who harbor resentment in their hearts and have internet access at exactly midnight. On this forum, the victim writes the name of the person they hate and wish to send to hell, and their request is received by Enma Ai, also known as Jigoku Shōjo (Hell Girl). She later appears to the person who made the request and hands them a black straw doll with a red string around its neck.

Ai explains the rules of the “contract” that the victim is about to enter into, which involves paying a price equivalent to what she is about to demand. This is how we see the victim hesitate; sometimes she takes her time to think it over carefully before making her decision. This is because, if she decides to carry out her “revenge,” all she has to do is pull the cord—but this means she’ll also go to hell, though only in due time, once she dies a natural death. As you’ve just read, the premise and general plot of this anime are easy to follow and almost always lead to the same ending—predictable, tragic, and quite bittersweet, to be honest.

Hell Girl isn’t about a single story, but rather a series of short stories in which we can discern a curious similarity among them all. That similarity lies in human behavior and human nature taken to its most selfish, manipulative, and twisted extremes. No two cases we see are alike; each has its own tone, level of impact, and moral lesson. But as a general rule, all the stories share the same elements: a victim of injustice, a cruel and ruthless antagonist, and a fate already predetermined from the very beginning of the episode.

It’s true that this can vary as the episodes go on. But overall, the plot doesn’t change much, which makes it pretty predictable and a little boring. Or at least that’s how I felt while watching the first half of this anime. Then, I started noticing certain details, changes, and a bit of character development among the characters who appeared consistently in almost every episode. Thank goodness I decided not to drop this anime from the start and to watch it patiently until the end, because I would have missed out on a story that’s one of the most tragic and dark I’ve ever seen in my life.

Something typical of Japan is the sad and heart-wrenching way they tell stories, and this is even more evident in the horror genre. It’s worth noting that we’re talking about supernatural horror, which means paying attention to certain details throughout the series—such as the main protagonist/antagonist, Enma Ai, her powers, and those of her allies. Also, the whole theme of hell and the twisted way they show us the hallucinations experienced by the subjects of each story is what stands out the most. And not only that, but there’s also a level of psychological suspense that builds gradually, depending on the story.

Cases such as bullying, physical abuse, manipulation, violence, injustice, and murder are just a few of the many types of evils we see throughout the 26 episodes of Hell Girl. Each case is addressed to some extent, with some being more shocking than others. Some episodes can be incredibly frustrating due to the narrative—the way events unfold somewhat hastily, with little context and a sense of rushing. There are also supporting characters who, honestly, are among the most despicable I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

They’re one-dimensional characters with little depth of thought, existing solely to fulfill a specific role without any nuance or complexity. On the other hand, we also meet characters who barely stand out in some episodes but later undergo character development that’s worth watching. For example, there’s the freelance journalist Hajime Shibata and his daughter Tsugumi, whom we see frequently after the first half. There’s also Enma Ai herself, who, honestly, has the most tragic and heart-wrenching story you’ll ever encounter in this anime.

I won’t deny that, after watching the first three episodes, I had my doubts about whether or not I’d end up liking this anime. But after finishing the first season (yes, this is actually just the first season), I realized how wrong I was to doubt this anime gem. It’s true that I thought—and still think—everything I said above about its stories, the way some of them are written, and how some of the supporting characters are one-dimensional. But otherwise, I won’t deny that it entertained me thanks to its dark tone, its themes, and the different cases we see here.

That said, there are other details I wish had been executed better in many of its episodes. But you can’t expect too much from a horror anime from the 2000s that was apparently broadcast on public television back then. You know I’m a fan of horror, but I’m actually more of a fan of works that feature a certain degree of gore, grotesque scenes, and quite traumatic moments. My thing is watching stories that shatter you, unsettle you, and leave you breathless by the end. So, as for Hell Girl, I won’t deny that it has its moments in the occasional case, but it doesn’t quite reach that level of horror that I personally expected to see, to be honest.

But anyway, at least this anime is good for passing the time, watching it with some friends, and picking up the occasional moral lesson from among the many tragic stories it has to tell. Because it really does have morals to spare, as if it were the kind of series that aims to make the audience reflect on certain cases and issues. That’s why I’m not going to be too hard on Hell Girl either, since it’s an anime made for a somewhat more memorable and thought-provoking purpose—and I really appreciate that. Also, we’re talking about its first season here, not the other three seasons I still have left to watch, which, from what I’ve read, have more to offer.

Finally, let’s talk about Hell Girl’s audiovisual aspects, which were animated by one of the largest and longest-running studios in existence. And you can really tell the studio’s years of experience, since the animation, art style, character design, dark color palette, and perfect use of light and shadow are all top-notch. While it falls a bit short in terms of fluidity and detail, the shots, transitions, and varied visual effects more than make up for it. The sound effects also stand out, but nothing compares to this anime’s fascinating soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 within the genres of supernatural horror, suspense, and dark fantasy.
