Plot

The film opens with a sequence of newspaper clippings and other documents being reviewed by a man who appears to be a psychiatrist, while in the background we hear a recording of a session he has had with a patient who quotes the opening lines of a poem known as “Antigonish” as the psychiatrist asks him questions. The man reviewing the documents fast-forwards the recording from time to time to listen to the various sessions he has had with this man, who appears to have certain mental health issues and is also the same person mentioned in the various newspaper clippings about multiple homicides and some cases of domestic violence.

Trama

Now that I think about it, I’m supposed to write the movie’s “plot” at the top, but instead I always end up describing the first few minutes of the film—which I’m not sure counts as such. Still, this serves as a great mental exercise and a guide to help me remember how the movie begins and unfolds. However, in the case of the cinematic gem I’m sharing with you today, I don’t think I need a guide since I’ve remembered it so well for many years. I can even tell you that I’ve remembered it since I was a child—which is surprising, since I remember almost nothing from those years.

The movie has various narrative elements that could easily make it a horror-thriller with mystery, psychological suspense, and detective elements. But at first, it’s true that it comes across as just another thriller—nothing more. On the other hand, it also has an opening that really hooks you. Identity hits the ground running and doesn’t let up, with one scene after another packed with tension, deaths, and other elements that will keep you on the edge of your seat—or your bed, or wherever you’re watching it. The best part is that the movie is only an hour and a half long—just enough time to show us all of this with perfect balance.

Identity takes us to a rainy night at a remote Motel in Nevada, where ten people unexpectedly find themselves gathered after a series of incidents and events that force them to stay there together. However, throughout the night, a series of murders takes place in each of the rooms. The movie has—in case you haven’t noticed—a plot very similar to many mystery or detective stories where a group of people, gathered and isolated, must figure out who the killer is as the deaths occur one by one.

All these movies, TV series, and other works stem from the same novel on which Identity is based. Well, that’s to be expected from a literary work by the so-called “Queen of Crime.” But that doesn’t mean the overall plot of this movie is as predictable as other mystery and detective films and series. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Identity features one of the most unexpected and fascinating plot twists I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Especially the last half-hour of the movie, which delivers a plot twist that no one saw coming and completely changes your perspective on everything you’re watching.

That’s why I think Identity has such a fascinating script and narrative, and such impressive attention to references and details. The number of characters we meet at this motel, their names, the rooms they’re assigned, the relationships they develop, their professions, the order of their deaths, and so on. Every detail we’re given about each character—no matter how insignificant it may seem at first—ultimately connects to something much bigger, until the raw and tragic reality of this entire story is finally revealed to us.

If I could describe what this movie is like—without giving away any spoilers for those who haven’t seen it yet—I’d say it’s like describing the twisted and fragmented mind of a dangerous person. Except that it’s presented in a way that makes it seem like you’re watching a “real” murder case, when in reality it’s all symbolism for something more psychological and internal. The movie aims to play with your mind from start to finish, beginning with a typical horror thriller and then shifting everything in a way that ultimately makes more sense. I don’t have much to say about the characters, since each one simply plays a specific role.

However, I won’t deny that the performances are excellent, especially in the case of the protagonist, for example. Obviously, the character who stands out the most is the patient introduced at the beginning and end of the film, whose psychological issues are later explained to us. The unique way in which the film unfolds the origins of the various murders he has committed—and what ultimately made him who he is—is truly captivating. It also serves perfectly as a source of inspiration for other antagonists we’ve seen in psychological thrillers.

The theme of mental disorders and the way the film connects all of this to the cases of murder and violence dealt with in the legal system is intriguing, since it’s something that occurs more frequently than usual in a very popular country where this film originated, for example. It seems that a certain percentage of serial killers suffer from a specific disorder that, in turn, stems from traumatic childhood experiences or past events. Be that as it may, cinema will always manage to mimic reality in one way or another, and what stands out about Identity is the creative and well-crafted way in which it presents this to us.

Other than that, I don’t have much more to say other than to congratulate the production team behind this film, who did a spectacular job. Especially because you can really tell how much effort they put into using visual effects and practical effects throughout almost the entire film. The setting—the endless rainy night—the visual design of the Motel, the characters’ varied costumes, the makeup, and the other visual details that can be appreciated throughout the film are also excellent. You can definitely feel that it’s a classic horror thriller in the first half of the film.

Beyond that, the psychological aspect and the way the two events—which unfold simultaneously over the course of this hour-and-a-half-long film—are interwoven is fascinating. Especially since they make extensive use of effects, cinematography, camera angles, motion effects, and transitions that really work well, to be honest. The camera angles and other framing choices really stand out, as does the use of light and shadow in this film. The sound effects are no slouch either and really stand out in various key scenes, and the same goes for the soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the psychological thriller, mystery, and horror genres.
