Plot
The anime begins one night as we see two young girls fleeing from a building while being chased by a large, burly man. They head toward a cave that appears to be a storage area and try to stop the man, but they fail. Next, we see a small group of elderly people sitting in front of the same building—but this time during the day—as they talk about a tradition in the town where they live: holding a kind of ceremony for every death, during which the remains are taken to the top of a hill where a temple stands.

After recommending several horror anime that were a bit “long” for those who aren’t used to watching more than 12 episodes of an animated series, I decided to look for an anime that’s short but impactful. That’s how, after a few minutes of searching online, I came across Housing Complex C, a horror anime with just 4 episodes—perfect for those who want to watch something quick during this last week of October. Something that seems hard to find these days is an anime with genuine horror—not just so-called horror that’s really just suspense with a bit of gore and action.
Unfortunately, it’s hard these days to find horror animes that are truly unsettling, beyond just being scary. It’s not a very in-demand market, at least not in Japan, where anime obviously originated. That’s why it’s hard to find good horror animes, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. If I had more time, I could bring you more anime in this style, but we have less than a week left of this “Month of Horror.” So all that’s left is to tell you about a few short anime that are perfect to watch before Halloween arrives. And what better way to start than with this supernatural horror miniseries with hints of cosmic horror.
Luego de traerles varios animes de terror un tanto “largos” para los que no están acostumbrados a ver más de 12 episodios de una serie animada, decidí buscar un anime que sea corto, pero potente. Es así como, luego de varios minutos de búsqueda en internet, me encontré con Housing Complex C, un anime de terror con tan solo 4 episodios que son perfectos para los que quieren ver algo rápido en esta última semana de octubre. Algo que parece no ser sencillo de encontrar actualmente es un anime que tenga terror auténtico y no un supuesto terror que solo es suspenso con algo de gore y acción.
Por desgracia, actualmente es difícil encontrar animes de terror que perturben, aparte de dar miedo. No es un mercado tan demandable, al menos no en Japón donde evidentemente se originan los animes. Es por eso que cuesta encontrar animes buenos de terror, pero eso no significa que no existan. Si tuviera más tiempo, les pudiera traer más animes de este estilo, pero ya solo nos queda menos de una semana de este “Mes del Terror”. Así que solo queda hablarles de algunos animes cortos, pero perfectos para ver antes de que llegue Halloween. Y qué mejor manera de empezar que con esta miniserie de terror sobrenatural con tintes de horror cósmico.

Con solo unos minutos basta y sobra para que podamos empatizar con la mayoría de inquilinos de este lugar. Y no solo eso, sino que de repente te mete algunas escenas que te ponen a pensar sobre lo que está sucediendo de fondo y de una manera que logra disimular muy bien para el espectador común.
La manera en la que equilibran el suspenso con el misterio y el terror es fascinante, sobre todo cuando nos muestran lo que hay en esa cueva o depósito, qué sé yo. Pero lo que más perturba es la forma en la que desarrollan todo el misterioso caso que ocurre en este complejo de viviendas de una forma que disimula muy bien mientras ocurren eventos aparentemente comunes al mismo tiempo. Mientras vemos cómo la pequeña y amable Kimi busca la forma de hacer felices a todos los inquilinos, una serie de eventos extraños y perturbadores ocurren de fondo y nos hacen dudar tanto de los extranjeros como de los mismos inquilinos del complejo.

Mountains of fish that appear out of nowhere in the complex’s garden, dead animals at little Kimi’s apartment door, and strange disappearances of people who are replaced by clumps of green moss. For a series that lasts only four episodes, I think each one is perfectly balanced—featuring a plot development, a series of strange and unsettling events, and a final twist that completely blows your mind in a way you don’t see coming at all, especially at the very end. With each passing episode, the mystery and suspense build to a point where it’s impossible to ignore.
There are no typical clichés here, no useless background characters, and no unnecessary subplots. The anime is concise yet powerful, and it even has a level of drama and suspense that balances very well with the plot. Although I have to be honest about one thing: when it comes to the mystery, the anime doesn’t want us to think too hard about what’s happening and even leaves us clues that are very easy to interpret. Especially when it comes to who our little Kimi really is—or at least what she’s hiding. Of course, maybe not all of us are cynical enough to draw those conclusions.

Cada episodio que pasa el misterio y el suspenso se eleva hasta un punto en el que es imposible de ignorar.
Aquí no hay clichés típicos, personajes de fondo inútiles ni subtramas innecesarias. El anime es preciso, pero potente y hasta tiene un nivel de drama y suspenso que se equilibra muy bien con la trama. Aunque de algo sí tengo que ser sincero es que cuando hablamos de misterio, el anime no busca que pensemos tanto en lo que está ocurriendo y hasta nos deja pistas que son muy fáciles de interpretar. Sobre todo con lo que es realmente nuestra pequeña Kimi, o al menos lo que ella está ocultando. Claro, tal vez no todos tengamos la malicia suficiente para llegar a dichas conclusiones.

Without saying anything else that might be interpreted as a spoiler for those of you reading this who want to watch this anime, I’ll just remind you that the Japanese know how to create stories that feel both fascinating and profound at the same time. The anime also explores certain narrative themes and lessons, such as hatred, obsession, ignorance, racism, and fear. We also see how a small community of tenants becomes embroiled in a minor interracial conflict with foreign scholarship students while strange events unfold. Likewise, the way it reminds us that humanity itself is always seeking divine guidance to bring us salvation in a doomed world is excellent.
Pero eso es mejor ya que con dicha ignorancia, el anime puede llegar a ser de lo más inesperado e impredecible posible. Incluso a mí me voló la cabeza su final, siendo algo que fascina al mismo tiempo ya que mezcla elementos y creencias tradicionales con ciencia ficción y hasta horror cósmico. Muy pocos animes de terror poseen terror cósmico en sus tramas, lo cual es algo que me encanta ver ya que se puede decir que es el nivel más alto de terror que existe, según yo. Solo imagínate la existencia de una entidad cósmica que sea capaz de controlar la misma realidad y el tiempo de tal forma que te encuentres atrapado en una especie de bucle temporal.
Sin nada más que decir que no llegue a interpretarse como spoiler para los que me leen y quieren ver este anime, solo les recordaré que los japoneses saben cómo crear historias que se sienten fascinantes y profundas al mismo tiempo. El anime también posee ciertos detalles narrativos y lecciones como lo es el odio, la obsesión, la ignorancia, el racismo y el miedo. También vemos cómo una pequeña sociedad de inquilinos entran en un pequeño conflicto interracial con becados extranjeros mientras ocurren cosas extrañas. Igualmente, la forma en la que nos recuerdan que la misma humanidad siempre busca una guía divina para darnos salvación en un mundo condenado es excelente.

A pesar de ser animada por un estudio desconocido, cuenta con una excelente producción y un tono muy oscuro y libre de censura. El estilo de animación, dibujo, diseños de los personajes, la paleta de colores, los planos, el uso de luces y sombras y los efectos visuales que tiene el anime son de lo más destacable. También cuenta con una fluidez excelente para ser un anime de terror corto que seguramente nadie conoce. Los efectos de sonido también son excelentes, al igual que la banda sonora que tiene.
