Hello, horror fans. Today we’re back with yet another movie in this genre—perfect for this month of October, filled with fear, suspense, horror, and all the other things we love so much. This time, I’ll be talking about the remake of Wes Craven’s classic and memorable 1970s film. That’s because this was the version I saw as a kid, and it’s the one I recognize right away. The Hills Have Eyes was co-written and directed by Alexandre Aja, and stars Aaron Stanford, Kathleen Quinlan, Vinessa Shaw, and others. Get ready for one of the bloodiest and most grotesque movies I’ve ever seen.

Plot
The film opens with text on the screen describing the nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. government in the second half of the 20th century. It then cuts to the desolate, scorching desert of New Mexico, where we see a group of three people in radiation suits conducting tests and collecting samples from what appears to be a completely contaminated river on a hillside. Suddenly, they are startled by a person calling for help, while someone else suddenly attacks them with a pickaxe, kills them, and then drags their bodies into a truck.
Trama
Trailer & Review
Here's the trailer for the movie:
Among the movies I watched the most when I was just a kid or a preteen is Wrong Turn (2003), which has a plot very similar to the movie I’m featuring today. If I remember correctly, back then I had a CD/DVD with these movies on it, and I remember watching them every once in a while. That’s how I came to discover this remake of Wes Craven’s classic 1970s film. I’m not usually a big fan of remakes these days, since I think nothing beats the originals, but now that I’m taking a closer look at the horror movies I watched as a kid, there were indeed a few that turned out to be remakes of classic films.
I’m grateful that this remake of The Hills Have Eyes exists, since that’s how I was able to discover the origin of one of the most iconic films in Wes Craven’s entire career—who, for those who don’t recognize him yet, is the same director who made A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Scream (1998). As I mentioned, the plot of this movie bears a very obvious resemblance to another film from the 2000s that I also watched a lot and that even became one of my favorites. But if we consider the release dates of each film and the fact that this is simply a remake of a movie from over forty years ago, it’s clear who drew inspiration from whom.

The Hills Have Eyes is about the Carter family, consisting of: former detective Bob, his wife Ethel, their children Lynn, Brenda, and Bobby, along with Lynn’s husband, Doug, and their young daughter Catherine. Instead of flying to a Caribbean island or some other better destination, the Carters have the “brilliant idea” of driving a motorhome through the New Mexico desert toward San Diego. They stop briefly at a gas station along the way, where they meet the owner—a decrepit old man who seems to have ties to some very dangerous people. He directs them to take a “shortcut” that isn’t on the map—one that will lead to their doom.
The film has a fairly predictable premise and plot, especially if you’re a fan like me who’s seen so many movies of this style. The pacing is good, and it has that dark, grotesque, and gory tone you’d expect from a film of that era. I don’t think it’s necessary to mention the influences this remake of the classic film shares with other remakes of horror classics, such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), for example. However, the dedication they’ve put into the tone and the amount of gore has caused both the plot and the screenplay to feel somewhat superficial.

Clichés, empty scripts, one-dimensional characters, predictable plot twists, and scenes of supposed tension where you already know what’s going to happen—and in the end, it happens exactly that way—and so on. The movie is almost indistinguishable from any other slasher horror film, except that in this case we see a very “colorful” group of antagonists and a lot of blood and graphic scenes not quite worthy of a classic slasher film from that era. Another thing I think it falls short on is trying to convey that sense of tension and unease you’re supposed to feel when you sense you’re being watched.
I haven’t seen Craven’s classic film from the ’70s, but I’d like to, since the very existence of a horror film of this style back then really piques my interest. That, and the narrative itself, since I read that it’s quite different from this remake, which ended up being rather flat and predictable. It’s not like I expect much from a horror movie where a family is hunted down and slaughtered by a group of cannibals and freaks in the desolate New Mexico desert. At least in that sense, the movie manages to give us exactly what we expect to see—and that’s it.

It’s true that it has its clichés, its one-dimensional characters, and its typical horror-movie scenes. But it manages to fulfill its purpose over the course of its more than an hour and a half, without beating around the bush or dragging on too long. You can’t really empathize with any of the characters—at least not in my case—and especially not at the beginning, since they don’t offer anything that makes them stand out. The only one who ends up standing out in the end is the very character you expected to end up dying or fleeing—or both. But other than that, only one of the two dogs that appear in the movie gets any real character development.
I also don’t intend to be too critical of this remake, since it has a tone or atmosphere that makes you reflect a bit on what past governments have done to these places they used for nuclear testing. At least in terms of its audiovisual presentation, the film succeeds in conveying that sense of desolation, despair, and horror that one expects to see in a film of this style. Even so, despite all the gore in the film, the antagonists we encounter here don’t inspire as much fear as one might expect. Instead, what we see is a group of deformed people who merely inspire disgust and revulsion.

It’s also the case that this remake reminds me, from start to finish, of the movie I mentioned earlier, which has a very similar plot. It’s not that I think it’s better than this movie, but at least the antagonists in Wrong Turn are much more dangerous, cunning, and terrifying than these deformed miners from New Mexico. On the other hand, it’s clear that the film’s critical message toward the United States and the terrible decisions it has made in the past is one of its most obvious points. But personally, I was hoping to see a bit more interaction and character development among that family of deformed people in the film.
Last but not least, let’s now discuss the audiovisual aspects of The Hills Have Eyes. One thing worth noting about this film is that, despite being directed by someone else, one of the main producers is the creator himself, Wes Craven, who demonstrates his talent for keeping costs down while still producing high-quality audiovisual work. In the case of this film, it’s quite evident that the cinematography, shot types, views, motion effects, the dark and warm color palette, and the use of light and shadow are among the most noteworthy aspects. Not to mention the excellent work on practical visual effects, makeup, and character design, among other elements.

I think the most notable aspects are the monstrosities we see in the movie itself, along with a high level of gore, no censorship, few nude scenes, and somewhat grotesque imagery. You can also notice the heavy use of practical visual effects and the complete absence of computer-generated effects—something I really appreciate. The movie manages to create a sense of tension and desperation at certain moments, but it’s nothing to write home about, to be honest. The sound effects also stand out quite a bit—even more so than the movie’s soundtrack itself.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 in terms of the horror, suspense, and science fiction genres.
