Hello, anime fans. Today I’m here to share the perfect pick for this “Month of Horror.” This time, I’m bringing you an anime that I’d personally recommend—especially if you’re a big fan of psychological horror with supernatural elements and plenty of gore in the classic ’90s style. Based on the novel of the same name by Fuyumi Ono (though it’s actually based more on the manga), Shiki is an animated adaptation produced by Daume studio. Get ready for one of the bloodiest and most inhuman anime I’ve seen so far.

These people are searching for a girl who appears to have gone missing, and immediately afterward, we see the girl’s body lying there, unconscious. The story flashes back, and we find ourselves days before her disappearance, on a bright summer day, where we see a girl dressed in flashy clothes walking through the village as she expresses her hatred and contempt for the people of Sotoba and her desire to leave that place far behind.

Well, here we are again with another anime that seems to promise a story full of horror and plenty of scenes perfect for enjoying this October—a month dedicated to horror because of Halloween and all that. I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t have high hopes for this anime, after what I brought you last time. This selection of anime to watch and review this month has been a bit all over the place, but so far none of them have disappointed me, and that’s a good sign for you guys. In the case of Shiki, you could say it’s a series that doesn’t end up being what it seems at first.
I know, I should be more specific when I talk about this anime, but I want to make this point clear first for those of you expecting something intense right from the first episode. When I told you at the beginning that this anime is “bloody and inhuman,” I wasn’t joking—just keep in mind that at first it can be a bit slow, boring, and even predictable in some ways. It’s an anime that takes its time to develop each case, each character introduced to us, and each episode—whether as an individual story or part of a larger, strange narrative.

On top of that, the anime has a very old-school style and animation, a far cry from what you’d expect to see in an anime released in 2010. On the other hand, what I can guarantee is that both its story and its narrative are among the best you’ll ever see in a supernatural horror and gore anime like Shiki. That said, it’s not an anime I’d recommend watching with friends or family due to its obviously gory and violent tone. But anyway, let’s get to what I should have mentioned earlier in the “plot” section of this anime—what it’s actually about.
Shiki transports us to a small, isolated town surrounded by mountains and hills called Sotoba in the 1990s, where a series of strange deaths plague the area in the middle of summer. Added to this is the striking nighttime move of a mysterious family into a castle located on one of the mountains, far from the town and its people. The deaths begin with a family of three who are found in a state of decomposition. Next is a young girl named Megumi Shimisu, who dreams of leaving the village to live in the city. After meeting one of the Kirishiki family members in person, she is found in the forest suffering from severe anemia.

In every case we’ll see in this town, the symptoms are the same: pallor, drowsiness, anemia, low red blood cell count, etc. Dr. Toshiro Ozaki and the young priest Seishin Muroi decide to investigate the cause behind all these endless deaths, while Natsuno Yuuki is pursued day and night by an entity that shouldn’t exist—days after the death of his classmate, Megumi Shimisu. The anime has a suspenseful and mysterious tone at the beginning that blends very well with the horror evident in the various deaths that occur in this town.
While it’s true that—as I mentioned earlier—the anime has a somewhat slow pace in the first half, as we witness each and every case of “illness” and subsequent death occurring in this town, the story then takes a gradual and quite shocking turn in terms of its tone, pace, and level of horror. I suppose this is the key point—or the main reason—why Shiki has become such a highly recommended horror anime all over the internet today. Its final act—or its second half—is everything you’d hope to see in an anime of this style.

And the thing is, while its script and story take their time showing us every detail, every idea, and every perspective on everything that’s happening in this isolated town, when the time comes to reveal a resolution, a plot twist, or an ending worthy of a horror anime, Shiki manages to exceed all your expectations. There are episodes in this anime that blow your mind, turn your stomach, and strip you of all hope you have for humanity itself. The way the story focuses equally on both sides is one of its most remarkable aspects.
In this anime, there are no good guys or bad guys, no heroes or villains, no honor, dishonor, blessing, or curse. In Shiki, there is only an isolated village, abandoned both by the world itself and by any divine entity that might exist. In this anime, we see a group of villagers with diverse perspectives, yet all sharing the same mindset and human nature, driven to the absolute extreme of despair. What we witness at the end of this anime is hell on earth itself—but in a way that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end just thinking about seeing something like that in real life.

Tragedies, deaths, injustices, despair, revenge, resentment, sadness, pain, and hatred. All of this and more is what you may witness in this anime, which has a rather dark, hopeless, and heart-wrenching tone. Here, we can’t bring ourselves to grow attached to any character, nor can we expect to see a “happy ending”—far from it. What we see here is simply humanity itself being consumed by hatred and genuine horror, while at the same time we’re shown a profound irony that serves as a moral lesson in this tragic story.
If there were life after death, but to attain it you had to kill people in order to survive, would you be capable of doing so? Or are you capable of enduring the agony and suffering leading up to total nonexistence rather than commit murder? What sets us humans apart from other species and beings—both existing and nonexistent? It’s common in Japan to see stories of this kind, where certain creatures of the underworld—such as Vampires or Werewolves—have emotions and thoughts similar to those of a human being.
Tragedias, muertes, injusticias, desesperación, venganza, rencor, tristeza, dolor y odio.

While I’m not a big fan of “humanizing” creatures from hell, Shiki pulls this off in a way that doesn’t really affect the plot or the overall story. Let’s just say that everyone gets what they deserve with that heart-wrenching, disturbing, bloody, and devastating ending. It’s worth watching just for that ending—it’s absolutely worth it, honestly. On the other hand, when it comes to the characters, the ones who stand out the most—and not exactly in a positive way—are Dr. Toshiro Ozaki and the young priest Seishin Muroi. On one hand, we have a doctor who will do everything in his power to save the people of this town.
This may even involve doing unspeakable things to his fellow human beings in order to find “the cure” for the situation unfolding in this isolated place. On the other hand, we have a young monk who is also a novelist—whose books aren’t exactly meant for people who believe in God, far from it. A man who claims to be “abandoned by God,” but who ultimately comes to know someone who truly is. We also have other notable characters like Megumi Shimisu and Natsuno Yuuki, whom, personally, I don’t like at all. Of course, I’m not saying they lack character development—even the minor characters in this anime have it.

Last but not least, let’s finally talk about the audiovisual aspects of Shiki. As I mentioned at the beginning, one of the most notable things about this anime is its animation style and character designs, which remind us of anime from the ’80s or ’90s—where we can see that traditional drawing style with elongated characters and less fluid movement. The studio behind this adaptation does a great job of at least maintaining that vintage style from the era when it was originally aired. I’m not saying I don’t like it—quite the opposite, in fact.
While it does fall short in some aspects due to sticking to that traditional, somewhat stiff style, it more than makes up for it with intricate details, a palette of warm and dark colors, perfect use of light and shadow, and visual effects that fit perfectly with the tone it aims to convey from the very beginning. The anime also doesn’t bother with bloody, grotesque, or graphic scenes. All of this, combined with fascinating shots, well-integrated sound effects, and a memorable soundtrack, makes this anime an audiovisual marvel that pays homage to the past and to authentic horror.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the horror, psychological suspense, mystery, and gore genres.
