Hello, fans of great music. We’re back for another perfect Tuesday to talk about music—great music—in this special “Music & Natto” section. This time, we’ll continue discussing more Alternative Rock bands that influenced me during my teenage years and early adulthood. But before we continue, I want to remind you that this section exists thanks to the weekly contest hosted by our colleague @ablaze in the Music community, called “Three Tunes Tuesday.”
Today I’m going to talk about Gorillaz, a British virtual Alternative Rock band created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett in 1998 (the year I was born). The virtual band gained worldwide popularity in the early 2000s thanks to the successful release of their first studio album. Gorillaz is known for being an experimental musical and audiovisual project that even features a variety of stories, characters, and an entire universe depicted in their various music videos. The fictional members of this band are: 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russell Hobbs.
19-2000 - Gorillaz

One of the first—if not the very first—songs I ever heard by this famous virtual band, which is also one of the most popular tracks in their extensive and experimental musical repertoire. It’s part of a short list of songs by this fictional group that I remember most clearly and have listened to the most since I first discovered them when I was just a teenager. “19-2000” is the second single from the band’s self-titled debut album, released in 2001. The song is easily recognizable for its catchy beat, blending Trip-Hop with Funk, among other computer-generated sounds.
“19-2000” is a single created with the sole purpose of reaching a more commercial audience, which is why both its production and lyrics are simple yet catchy at the same time. However, over time, the lyrics of this single have been interpreted in various ways. In short, the song’s lyrics tell the story of a guy who’s out to buy himself a pair of “cool Nike shoes.” This first part of the song perfectly describes a guy living in a world that’s moving “too fast” and who’s trying to stay “tied” to a past he’s “tried to leave behind.”
Yes, this is a bit confusing, but it makes sense if we look at it in a broader context. The song also talks about going through life as if it were “get the cool shoeshine”—that is, living with style and without any regrets. The singer also encourages us to be authentic with lines like “you must make your own shoes,” which could refer to forging your own path in life, without needing to follow or imitate others to be accepted by society. The song has a sound that envelops you and motivates you to move with that “cool shoeshine” style it talks about.
Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz

We continue with another famous and unforgettable Gorillaz song—one that has also been in the back of my mind and is among the first I look for and listen to whenever I want to hear this amazing virtual band. The song was practically the first to be composed and released, and it was also one of the first to bring the band the worldwide fame it enjoys today. “Clint Eastwood” is the lead single from Gorillaz’s self-titled debut album (2001). The song features an unmistakable blend of Hip-Hop, Rap, Alternative Rock, and electronic sounds.
Unlike the previous song we discussed, this one has lyrics with a slightly deeper and more meaningful message for everyone who listens to it. “Clint Eastwood” speaks to us about human duality and how we perceive “happiness” and the “reality” of life in an interpretive, imaginative, and spiritual way. The song features many rhyming verses from the rapper, which convey a sense of nostalgia and self-awareness about what is real and what is fiction.
Life can be much more complicated than many people tend to describe, but to stay on course and not lose sight of what matters, we sometimes have to transcend reality itself and see things as possibilities rather than impossibilities. Sometimes happiness can be fleeting and depend heavily on what will happen tomorrow, but the song reminds us that “the future is coming on” and that, for now, we must do whatever we can to ensure it doesn’t catch us off guard. It also reminds us that many of the problems we face in life may just “be in your head.”
Tomorrow Comes Today - Gorillaz

And we wrap up this short but special list with a third single—not very well known compared to the previous two, but personally, it’s one of my favorites from this Gorillaz album. It’s a song with a more natural, rhythmic sound that’s less electronic than the previous ones. “Tomorrow Comes Today” is the fourth and final single from the English virtual band’s self-titled debut album. Its blend of Trip-Hop, Alternative Rock, and immersive sounds makes it a single that retains the experimental vibe from which Gorillaz emerged, before their evolution toward Electronic and Pop music.
The song tells of a world trapped in a single place, with a camera watching everything and no chance of escape. The narrator expresses his concern about being unable to leave because of that “camera,” which he later also describes as “digital.” This makes it clear that the song is about the digital world; coming from the vocalist of a virtual band that performs this song with a very alternative sound, it’s the height of irony, really. Likewise, it’s fascinating to hear how the narrator makes his detachment from this digital world clear to us.
Lines like “stereo, I want it on” reveal a kind of desire the protagonist has to disconnect from this world in some way—such as through the very music that plays mostly on the stereo, for example. We can also hear the line “don’t think I’m all in this world,” which may convey the narrator’s sense of detachment and melancholy toward this world. These lyrics, combined with the song’s slow tempo and its immersive, alternative sound, make it the perfect single to listen to when you want to “disconnect” from this digital world.
