Plot

The film begins by showing us a funeral with people gathered around and a man lying on the ground, crying as he leans over a sealed wooden coffin right next to the grave and the headstone. The sad man wonders who will be with him now as we see the camera slowly zoom in. Next, we see the surroundings of a small town nestled in the middle of a gloomy forest. Then we see some children gathered around something that has caught their attention, as has the man who approaches them and asks them very politely what they’re looking at. When the shot changes, we see that it is the skinned carcass of an animal.

Trama

This would be the fourth M. Night Shyamalan movie I’ve reviewed here on my blog, and it’s no coincidence at all, since this director is a genius when it comes to building suspense in the films he made a couple of decades ago. Of all the ones I remember seeing, the ones that fascinated me the most are Signs and The Sixth Sense. But as far as I can recall, I’d never seen this movie I’m sharing with you today—as far as I can recall, mind you. I might have caught part of it once when it aired on TV when I was a kid, but I don’t remember watching it all the way through. That’s why I took this opportunity to watch it and review it right away.

If it’s true that I got my hopes up too high for this movie, I was expecting a final twist that would shock me as much as some of Shyamalan’s other well-known films did. And I think that’s why it ended up disappointing me a little, especially when I got to the last half-hour of the movie. And keep in mind, I just finished watching it a short while ago, and I’m writing this with a fresh perspective on what I think of The Village. I won’t deny that, for the most part, the movie entertained me and really fascinated me, especially because of its suspense and mystery. But what does bother me is that people say it’s a horror movie, yet it has an ending that’s nothing like what you’d expect.

It’s true that there are horror elements that are noticeable in the first half of the movie. But before I talk about that, I want to give you a quick summary of what it’s about: a small town in the middle of a forest where people live in isolation and fear because of a kind of humanoid monster. It’s precisely because of this premise that I was hooked on this movie from the start, and I hoped that by the end I’d see a conclusion that would be sufficiently impactful and satisfying. But unfortunately, that’s not the case, and I think it’s clear just how much I disliked that ending—I’m still talking about it even now.

The plot and narrative certainly had the potential to deliver something more unsettling, especially given how it begins with scenes and elements that generate terror. However, the movie ended up leaning more toward suspense and mystery than toward horror per se. And that’s to be expected, since the whole theme of fear surrounding this community—isolated from the world and situated in the middle of a forest inhabited by supposedly nameless monsters—is something that sparks intrigue and curiosity about what they’re really like. But when they finally reveal their true appearance and the secret behind these creatures, it all falls apart with a mediocre ending.

Not to mention that, in the end, we realize what this place is really like. And I’ll say it again: it’s disappointing that the moral or final message this movie conveys is the value of innocence and hope. Although that moral isn’t all that bad, since throughout the movie we can see that what we’re witnessing is a society isolated from the evil and violence that exist in the world. The fear and terror we witness from the very beginning are merely a reflection of what the young, innocent people of this village feel. So that ending serves more as a wake-up call for the audience and for the young people themselves.

While this does strip away the terror and mysticism the film builds up from the start with these monsters, what The Village truly achieves in the end is revealing the true evil that dwells in this world and how this serves as a clear reflection of reality itself. Personally, I believe that this final revelation is one of the coldest, cruelest, and most ruthless scenes you’ll ever see in a film of this genre. We’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll emphasize again that true horror lies in what human beings are capable of doing to one another. In this case, we focus more on the violence that abounds in this world.

When we realize that the goal of this group of 19th-century Christians is to remain isolated from the world and the violence within it, we understand why it ended that way. But that ending doesn’t justify the drop in horror intensity during the film’s final half-hour. I’m not saying the narrative is bad; I’m just saying that the way the story is presented to us at the beginning and the way it unfolds in its final act are quite disjointed. What’s supposed to be a final plot twist that would change our perspective on everything ends up feeling a bit absurd.

I’ll say it again: I have nothing against the movie; its runtime of over an hour and a half was, to me, as entertaining and suspenseful as possible. The characters we meet are also well-developed, especially Ivy Walker—the main protagonist, played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Ivy stands out not only because of her visual impairment but also because she’s the bravest of all the young people we see in this town. Then there’s Lucius Hunt, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who has also done an excellent job as the co-lead. But the one who stands out the most is Noah Percy—for being the worst character of them all.

I don't mean that in a bad way, since I admit that Adrien Brody did an excellent job portraying a boy with a disability. What I mean by him being "the worst character" of all the ones we get to know in The Village is in the darkest sense. From the moment he appears on screen, we know he’s not like the others—and I’m not just talking about his disability, but also his malice and the way he views the forest monsters that everyone fears… except him. Instead, he finds the idea of meeting them amusing, as if he knows something about those creatures that the others don’t.

In the end, Noah is nothing more than a reflection of the evil this town has tried to leave behind. That’s why he stands out so much (and also because of a certain unexpected scene in the movie that changes everything). Other than that, there’s nothing more I can tell you about this fantastic cast and these characters. I’ll admit that The Village handles suspense and mystery very well, in a way that immerses you in its atmosphere and keeps you hooked until the very end. As for the ending, I’ve already said more than enough about it above, so there’s no need to repeat myself. I’ll just say that it’s one of the few things that ruins the film’s suspense and horror—but not much else, really.

Last but not least, let’s now talk about the audiovisual aspects of The Village. M. Night Shyamalan not only directed but also wrote and produced this film, which makes it clear why its audiovisual elements stand out so much and closely resemble those of other great films he has directed. Something I really like about Shyamalan’s work is the way he creates such contagious suspense. He achieves this very easily through the cinematography and styles that have become his trademark. I’m talking about the fixed cameras, the wide and extreme close-up shots, the slow focus transitions and camera movements, the color palette, and so on.

All of this, combined with a great cast of actors and a secluded location in the middle of a gray, colorless forest, gives the film that sense of suspense from start to finish. The practical visual effects also add a lot to this, especially the costumes, makeup, monster design, and the various animal carcasses we see throughout the film. There’s almost no gore and not many jump scares either. The sound effects also stand out a bit too much, but nothing compared to the film’s magnificent soundtrack. Anyway, here’s this movie—I only recommend it if you don’t mind disappointing endings.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the suspense, mystery, and horror genres.
