This is an anime/movie that people have been asking me to watch and review for a while now, and personally, I’ve also been really looking forward to watching and talking about it because of how famous it is. However, I thought long and hard about whether or not to save it as the grand finale for this “Month of Horror” special, since I’m not sure if I should consider it a horror anime per se—even though everyone online presents it as a horror work. Still, something tells me that many people were misled by its suspense, violence, and deaths. Personally, I think it works better as a psychological thriller.

I say this because of its story, which has a plot development that’s both striking and fascinating. But nothing compares to the final arc, which blows our minds in such a natural way that it even works perfectly as a conclusion. But before we get to that, I want to tell you a little about what this feature film—which runs just over an hour and twenty minutes—is about. Perfect Blue is about the life of a young Japanese idol who decides to leave her group to start working as an actress on television series. However, as her new career unfolds, she feels like she’s being intensely stalked by one of her fans.

Not content with this, her new role as an actress will force her to make some decisions that will call into question her image as a “pure and innocent idol,” which will trigger a series of incidents that will claim the lives of several people. Before I say anything about this movie, I want to mention that I know very little about the magnificent work of the master Satoshi Kon. I’m barely familiar with Paprika because it’s the only film by this great director that I’ve seen a couple of times, and it fascinated me quite a bit with its blend of science fiction, fantasy, and psychological themes.

But the fact that I’ve been able to watch and discuss Perfect Blue, his magnum opus, is a revelation decades in the making—one I’m truly grateful to have discovered. Now I understand why Satoshi Kon is so highly acclaimed and recommended when looking for a masterpiece that makes you question even your own existence. And that’s what’s so fascinating about his films—they make you think, reflect, and even blow your mind with plot twists or the way he distorts reality itself using highly ingenious and revolutionary visual styles and effects.

In the case of Perfect Blue, you can also see this throughout the film, and it’s introduced very well and gradually—unlike Paprika, where from the very first minutes you start to doubt what you’re actually seeing. The story unfolds at an excellent pace, showing us both the protagonist’s journey as she transitions from idol to actress and the perspective of her fans, who provide a perfect contrast to her “makeover” and new career. The film also explores the “dark side” that exists within the industry.

More than a “dark side,” it’s actually the decisions made by certain producers or screenwriters to “please the masses,” putting at risk the innocence and moral, mental, and emotional integrity of those involved. In this case, we’re talking about the protagonist, Mima Kirigoe, who starts out playing a supporting role but, over time, begins to take on more prominent roles—leading up to that graphic and violent scene that completely shifts the tone of the story. Another relevant and interesting aspect of this film is the way it uses the plot to test your perception.

They usually use the audiovisual elements for this, presenting us with interwoven scenes—such as flashbacks or situations that appear to be real—but then everything changes out of nowhere. However, Perfect Blue doesn’t stop there; it also uses the plot itself to subvert the very logic and meaning we ascribe to it, making us wonder whether what we see in the second half of the film is real or a product of the protagonist’s imagination. And speaking of Mima Kirigoe, we witness the effects of bullying, pressure, and identity issues.

The protagonist is undoubtedly the center of attention in this film, not only because of everything she experiences or endures over the course of more than an hour and twenty minutes, but also because of the way she reveals herself as an idol when she begins to seriously question her moral and emotional integrity. At first, they seem to be illusions or figments of the protagonist’s imagination, as she sees herself as “the voice of reason” or something similar. But then the frequency of her appearances gradually increases until, in the end, she is revealed in a way that blows your mind.

I suppose the main message of this story is how society, fans, teammates, and the industry itself put pressure on you and test you to see who you really are. It’s not just your actions, but also your decisions and the way people perceive you that don’t fully define you. You can become whoever you want to be if you set your mind to it and face trials and difficulties in a way that makes you feel good about yourself—not just to please others. On the other hand, the entertainment industry is never kind to rising stars, and nothing good ever comes of it.

Clearly, Perfect Blue was inspired not only by a novel but also by the industry itself and all the darkness behind it that no one else dares to talk about. Considering that it’s a film released in the late ’90s, it’s understandable that it caused quite a stir at the time; however, when we watch it today, we might even come to believe that cases like the one Mima Kirigoe experienced actually happened. Obviously, setting aside the issues of harassment and murder, I’m talking about what some actresses choose to do in the film industry in order to become famous.

Perfect Blue strikes a perfect balance between the dark, immoral, and violent side of the world of fame and a truly fantastic way of showing you how reality shifts in ways that alter your senses and your way of thinking. So much so that we may even begin to doubt our own true identity because of the way the protagonist’s personality changes throughout the film. It’s not a love story, much less a fairy tale; it’s reality itself pushed to psychological and emotional extremes due to pressure, harassment, and abuse.

I suppose the so-called “horror” of this movie lies mainly in the striking way people are murdered. That, and the suspense, which is handled perfectly on a psychological level—but in the end, it takes a turn that completely blows your mind. It goes from being a psychological thriller to practically a slasher film. And I really can’t stress this ending enough because it was nothing like what I expected from the very beginning—even right up until the moment it happened. I’ll say it again: the story and the characters play their leading roles perfectly.

But this film stands out most for its audiovisual aspects, especially the way it was produced. Madhouse has always made history with each of its works, but Satoshi Kon took this studio to new levels of production never seen before. The shots, the varied color palette, the shifts and interplay of scenes interwoven like flashbacks, and the exceptionally well-executed traditional drawing and animation style are among the best. The film doesn’t just stop at showing every detail of every scene; it goes beyond that, using shots, transitions, and visual and motion effects to set the mood perfectly for each scene.

For a moment, you think what you’re seeing is real, only for the scene to change completely—revealing it was all just an act or something straight out of the troubled mind of a young actress who can’t handle the pressure and harassment she’s facing. It’s as if you were actually watching a Hollywood psychological thriller, but animated in the unique style that Satoshi Kon is known for. But aside from that, the sound effects also manage to grab your attention, though nothing compares to the impact of the anime’s soundtrack itself. Anyway, here’s a masterpiece that I highly recommend you watch.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the psychological thriller, mystery, and horror genres.
