As a student of the audiovisual arts, I’ve been taught that certain narrative genres shouldn’t be mixed because they cancel each other out—like comedy and horror, which can make a story lose its seriousness. They’re like oil and water in a boiling pan. From this, I came to understand that magic and fantasy, as supernatural elements, can hardly work in a story that also deals with science fiction.
My main references are Marvel and DC superhero films, where these elements can coexist in “balance,” but narratively, they seem like chaotic themes to explain when combined. Then I watched the anime “Dandadan” and realized that the limits of these genres are imposed only by the author’s imagination.
This anime is an adaptation of the original manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, which was already hugely popular because of its blend of genres and unpredictable narrative. It deals with many extravagant things revolving around a pair of teenagers. Science SARU was responsible for animating the series spectacularly. The first season of Dandadan not only exceeded expectations but also became one of the year’s biggest trends upon its release.
“Dandadan” begins with a clash of beliefs. Momo Ayase is a high school girl with a tough personality but a good heart. She believes in ghosts but firmly denies the existence of extraterrestrials. On the other hand, Ken Takakura, nicknamed “Okarun,” is a textbook nerd: a social outcast obsessed with UFOs and aliens who completely denies the existence of supernatural beings. After an argument, they decide to test each other by visiting supposedly haunted locations and places where alien abductions are said to occur.
To both of their surprise, they were both right: ghosts and aliens exist. This initial incident sets off an adventure in which they end up facing aliens and an evil spirit known as Turbo Granny, who curses Okarun by stealing something very intimate from him. Momo Ayase helps him thanks to her newly awakened psychic powers.
The two experience paranormal adventures that are out of this world, causing them to develop feelings for each other. But in a world where alien invasions and manifestations of evil spirits occur, there isn’t much time for teenage romance.
Under the direction of Fuga Yamashiro, the studio spared no expense in bringing out all the visual firepower. Its style reminds me a lot of “Mob Psycho 100.” I don’t know how else to put it—the animation in Dandadan is spectacular during action scenes, especially when the speed of a punch or kick needs to stand out. The action sequences never feel repetitive; in fact, every battle against an enemy is unique in its execution. The series makes extensive use of striking colors, very similar to those used by Trigger, and its fluid sequences make it impossible to look away.
This is complemented by the designs of the supernatural entities and extraterrestrials, created by Yoshimichi Kameda, which perfectly balance the grotesque, the genuinely terrifying, and the absurdly comedic. In addition, the excellent soundtrack composed by Kensuke Ushio serves as the engine driving the adrenaline of every scene.
But setting the action aside, Dandadan’s success comes from the fact that it doesn’t get trapped in being just another psychedelic battle anime. To your surprise, this anime is a rom-com, much like “Ranma ½” was in its time. It is a story about the undeniable romance between its protagonists. Okarun and Momo form one of the best duos in contemporary anime. Their dynamic goes beyond the typical teenage romance of the genre. Their relationship is developed very well despite the awkward jokes. During the first part of the season, they stay together because of the main plot, but eventually they become inseparable.
However, this series didn’t shine only because of the beautiful relationship between these two. It also featured one of the most dramatic episodes centered on a supporting character: Acrobatic Silky, a tragic spirit who had been a ballet dancer in her human life.
You see, in the fictional world of Dandadan, a human soul can become an evil spirit after dying in misery, wandering aimlessly through the world. Acrobatic Silky had been a talented ballet dancer who lost her job after becoming pregnant.
Because of financial difficulties, she had to take on multiple jobs to raise her young daughter alone. However, one night, creditors broke into her home, robbed her, and took her daughter away. Consumed by despair, frustration, pain, and guilt, she eventually took her own life by jumping from a rooftop. However… her misery did not end there. Her spirit wandered aimlessly, filled with regret, until she encountered a little girl who looked very much like her daughter.
Upon seeing her, her soul instinctively took on a new form in order to “protect her.” She transformed into a spirit resembling a tall, gray woman with long limbs, wearing a hat and a red dress. For years, she stalked Aira Shiratori, mistaking her for her lost daughter. At the climax of her arc, adapted in the anime’s early episodes, she finally found peace after receiving the love and acceptance she had desperately needed.
Seeing the quality of that story made me realize that “Dandadan” has a gift for touching the viewer’s heart—something not many series can accomplish in a single episode. Deep down, behind the epic battles and irreverent humor, it is a profoundly human story. It explores loneliness and love, the teenage desire to belong somewhere, and how connections can help us overcome our own fears.
I find it incredible that the producers had such blind confidence in the success of the first season, since its final episode feels more like another episode than a conclusive one. They clearly knew there would be a second season. So I’ll discuss this anime more generally in my next review of the second season. If you still haven’t watched “Dandadan,” let me tell you that you’re missing out on one of the most unique next-generation rom-com anime series in Japanese animation.

Como estudiante de las artes audiovisuales, me han enseñado que hay géneros narrativos que no deben mezclarse, ya que se anulan entre si: como el género de comedia y terror que hace que una historia pierda seriedad (Son como agua y aceite en un sartén hirviendo). Con eso he entendido por mi cuenta que la magia y fantasía como cosas sobrenaturales difícilmente pueden funcionar en una historia en dónde también se traté la ciencia ficción.
Mis referentes son las películas de Superhéroes de Marvel y DC, en dónde estás cosas pueden convivir en "Equilibrio", pero narrativamente me parecen temas muy caóticos de explicar si se llegan a combinar. Pero luego me ví el anime de "Dandadan" y me di cuenta de que los límites sobre estos géneros solo son impuestos por la imaginación del autor que los trata.
Este anime es la adaptación del manga original de Yukinobu Tatsu, y ya gozaba de una enorme popularidad por su mezcla de géneros y su narrativa impredecible: Trata de muchas cosas extravagantes que giran entorno a una pareja de adolescentes. Fue el estudio Science SARU quien se encargo de animar la obra de forma espectacular. La primera temporada de Dandadan no solo superó las expectativas, sino que se volvió tendencia en su año de estreno.
"Dandadan" comienza con un choque de creencias: Momo Ayase es una chica de instituto con un carácter rudo pero tiene buen corazón, ella cree en los fantasmas, pero niega rotundamente la existencia de los extraterrestres. Por otro lado, Ken Takakura, apodado como "Okarun", es un nerd de manual, un marginado social obsesionado con los ovnis y los alienígenas que niega por completo la existencia de las cosas sobrenaturales. Tras una discusión, ambos deciden ponerse a prueba visitando lugares supuestamente embrujados y sitios en dónde supuestamente ocurren abducciones.
Para sorpresa de ambos, los dos tenían razón: Tanto los fantasmas como los alienígenas existen. Este incidente inicial desencadena una aventura en donde terminan enfrentándose a alienígenas y a un espíritu maligno conocido como la Turbo Abuela, que maldice a Okarun robándole algo muy íntimo. Por lo que Momo Ayase le ayuda gracias a sus recién despertados poderes psíquicos.
Ambos viven aventuras paranormales que están fuera de este mundo y eso hace que comiencen a desarrollar sentimientos por el otro, pero en un mundo en dónde ocurren invasiones alienígenas y la manifestación de espectros malignos, no hay mucho tiempo para el romance de estos adolescentes.
Bajo la dirección de Fuga Yamashiro. El estudio no escatimó en gastos al saca aquí toda la artillería en las visuales. Su estilo me recuerda mucho a "Mob Psycho 100", no lo sé, la animación de Dandadan es una maravilla en los momentos de acción en la que la velocidad de un golpe o una patada tiene que hacerse notar. Las secuencias de acción no son repetitivas, de hecho cada combate contra algún enemigo es única en su ejecución. Hay un uso de colores muy llamativos que son muy similares al que usa el estudio "Trigger", porque tiene una fluidez en las secuencias que no puedas perder de vista la opción.
A esto se le suma el diseño de los entes sobrenaturales y los extraterrestres, a cargo de Yoshimichi Kameda, que oscila perfectamente entre lo grotesco, lo verdaderamente aterrador y lo ridículamente cómico. Además, la excelente banda sonora compuesta por Kensuke Ushio actúa como el motor que impulsa la adrenalina de cada escena.
Pero dejando de lado la acción, el éxito de Dandadan se debe a que no se enfrasca en ser otro anime de peleas psicodelicas, porque para ti sorpresa, este anime es un Romcom, así como lo fue "Ranma 1/2" en su tiempo. Está es una historia sobre el innegable romance de sus protagonistas. Okarun y Momo forman uno de los mejores dúos que ha dado el anime contemporáneo. Su dinámica trasciende el típico romance adolescente del género. Hay una relación que se construye muy bien a pesar de las bromas torpes, durante la primera parte de la temporada se mantienen juntos por temas de la trama principal, pero llega a un momento en el que se vuelven inseparables.
Pero esta serie no solo brillo por la bonita relación de estos 2, sino por tener a uno de los episodios más dramáticos protagonizados por un personaje secundario: Acrobatic Silky, fue un trágico espíritu que en su vida humana era una bailarina de ballet.
Verás, en el mundo ficticio de Dandadan, cabe la posibilidad de que al morir lleno de desgracia, un alma humana se convierta en un espíritu maligno que vague de forma errante por el mundo. Pues Acrobatic Silky solía ser en vida una talentosa bailarina de ballet que se quedó sin empleo tras quedar embarazada.
Debido a deudas económicas, tuvo que aceptar múltiples trabajos para criar sola a su pequeña hija. Sin embargo, una noche su hogar fue asaltado por acreedores que le robaron y se llevaron a su hija. Consumida por la desesperación,, la frustración, el dolor y la culpa, terminó quitándose la vida al lanzarse desde un tejado. Sin embargo... Su miseria no terminó ahí. Su espíritu vago sin rumbo y lleno de arrepentimientos hasta que se encontró con una pequeña niña que era muy similar a su hija.
Al verla, instintivamente su alma adquirió una nueva forma para "Protegerla": Se transformó en un espíritu con apariencia de una mujer alta, gris y de extremidades largas que viste un sombrero y un vestido rojo. Durante años acechó a Aira Shiratori tras confundirla con su hija perdida. Y en el clímax de su arco (adaptado en los primeros episodios del anime), finalmente encontraría la paz al recibir el amor y aceptación que tanto necesitaba.
Al ver la calidad de esa historia, me di cuenta de que "Dandadan" tiene el don de tocar el corazón del espectador, y eso es algo que no muchas series pueden hacer con facilidad en un solo episodio. En el fondo, detrás de las batallas épicas y el humor irreverente, es una historia profundamente humana. Habla sobre la soledad y el amor, el deseo adolescente de pertenecer a algún lugar y cómo las conexiones pueden ayudarnos a superar nuestros propios miedos.
Me parece increíble que los productores tuvieran una confianza ciega en el éxito de esta primera temporada, ya que su episodio final se siente más como un episodio más, no uno concluyente, por lo que sabían bien que se haría una segunda temporada. Así que hablare de forma general de este anime en la próxima review de la segunda temporada. Si aún no te has visto "Dandadan", te aviso que te estás perdiendo uno de los animes Romcom de ultima generación más singulares de la animación japonesa.
