When it was airing, “Dandadan” managed to surprise me. Its first episodes were a direct continuation of the arc that had been left unfinished at the end of the previous season. There was no recap or brief summary of what had happened in the series—it jumped straight into the action. I also understand that the first three episodes, which conclude the “Evil Eye” arc, were released prematurely in theaters as a movie.
I’m not sure whether all of this was the result of an elaborate marketing plan, but it worked. It was a success that boosted the series’ popularity, even across different media outlets. If you read my previous review of Dandadan’s first season, you’ll know that in this review I’ll be discussing the anime more broadly, since both seasons together make for a much more complete product to evaluate.
The animation studio Science SARU went above and beyond, delivering an adaptation that remained very faithful to the essence of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga. This second season features situations and settings that posed challenges for animation, but the pacing and quality kept improving as the episodes continued. In fact, as just another anime viewer, there are moments I’d even say are more enjoyable in this version—for example, the song from episode 6, “Hunting Soul,” which is one of the best rock ’n’ roll pieces I’ve heard in a long time. I’ve listened to it countless times, practically to exhaustion. It was a surprise that exceeded my expectations for the series.
The rules of this chaotic universe, where the supernatural and extraterrestrials coexist, continue to be written. This second season begins with a direct confrontation against someone who seemed to be a frightening antagonist, but who apparently will end up becoming a powerful ally. The introduction of Jiji, Momo’s childhood friend, and the terrifying threat of the “Evil Eye” is reminiscent of how Okarun was cursed by Turbo Granny in the first season. It’s a similar problem, but handled in a very different way.
The second part also focuses on a confrontation, this time with a parody of Godzilla in the form of an alien robot. It’s the kind of thing I would expect to see in a mecha anime, but I’ve realized that “Dandadan” can work with any extravagant genre. Absolutely anything can happen and still remain consistent with its bizarre themes. Somehow, it manages to balance the different tones it presents, making it remarkably versatile in terms of its content. I’m referring to its absurd comedy and sentimental drama, as well as the epic action that is always welcome. These are so many elements that, when mixed together, usually create a disaster, but somehow they can coexist in perfect balance.
As the story progresses, the motivations of the new aliens and spirits who appear are gradually fleshed out. Little by little, this rom-com becomes a shonen series, as the situations Momo and Okarun find themselves in grow more difficult while they face increasingly powerful enemies. The narrative gives you occasional moments to catch your breath—but they are very brief.
The best moments I highlighted from this season are Okarun’s confrontations with the evil spirit “Evil Eye.” There are two or three fights throughout the season, but in terms of animation quality, the battles against Evil Eye are masterful. The soccer-like movements using a ball made of tormented souls are incredible. This is enhanced by a soundtrack that drives the viewer’s adrenaline during the sequences.
But no matter how incredible a series looks, it wouldn’t work without its characters. The relationship between Momo Ayase and Okarun becomes increasingly intimate as they continue having their wild adventures. The arrival of Jiji and Aira adds a much more entertaining dynamic by introducing friendship and rivalry fueled by jealousy. But just when I thought that would be more than enough, even more new characters arrived to get involved in these crazy adventures, such as Kinta Sakata and Bamora.
Up to this point, it hadn’t been clear to me who the protagonist of the story was—Momo or Okarun—but I realized that they each play a complementary role, making this a story with co-protagonists. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be Okarun, because he gains much more self-confidence as the story progresses. He doesn’t do so by leaps and bounds, but I respect that, because progress is progress. He has shown himself to be a character capable of giving everything for what he believes in, while Momo remains the tough but kind-hearted girl who keeps the team together. Watching them support each other is like witnessing true love in Dandadan.
The first and second seasons of Dandadan were an absolute joy to watch. They were more than I expected, and when I finished the final episode, I immediately started reading the manga. Now all I can do is wait to see what comes next in the story adapted into animation. I can only say that what lies ahead in the third season will be big, emotional, and even better. I think it’s one of the best anime series currently airing. It became clear to me that it isn’t just an extravagant action comedy, but a story with a great deal of heart. If the first season hooked you, you’re going to love the second.

Cuando estaba en emisión, "Dandadan" logró sorprenderme, sus primeros episodios eran la continuación directa del arco que había quedado inconcluso en el final de la temporada pasada. No hubo ninguna recapitulación o mini resumen de lo que había pasado en la serie, fue un salto directo a la acción. Y tengo entendido que los 3 primeros episodios que concluyen el arco de "Evil Eye" se estrenaron prematuramente en cines como una película.
No estoy seguro si todo ésto fue obra de un elaborado plan de marketing, pero dio resultado. Fue un éxito para impulsar la fama de la serie hasta en diferentes medios de comunicación. Si leyeron mi reseña anterior sobre la primera temporada de Dandadan, sabrán que en esta Review hablaré de forma más amplia del anime. Ya que la suma de ambas temporadas da un producto mucho más completo para su evaluación.

Está segunda temporada presenta situaciones y escenarios que fueron desafíos para el medio animado, pero el ritmo y la calidad fueron aumentando progresivamente conforme continuaban los episodios. De hecho, como solo un espectador más del anime, hay momentos que me atrevería a decir que se disfrutan mejor: como por ejemplo la canción del episodio 6 "Hunting Soul", que es una de las mejores piezas de rock and Roll que he escuchado en mucho tiempo (La he escuchado muchas veces, hasta el cansancio), está fue una sorpresa que ha logrado superar mis expectativas sobre la serie.
Las reglas de este caótico universo en donde lo sobrenatural y los extraterrestre coexisten se siguen escribiendo: en esta segunda temporada se inicia con un enfrentamiento directo con quién parecía ser un antagonista de temer, pero al parecer terminará siendo un poderoso aliado. La introducción de Jiji, el amigo de la infancia de Momo, y la aterradora amenaza del "Evil Eye" es como cuando en la primera temporada Okarun fue maldecido por la Turbo Abuela, es un problema similar, pero se maneja de forma muy diferente.
La segunda parte también está enfocada a un enfrentamiento, pero con un robot alienígena parodia de Godzilla. Es algo que acostumbraría ver en un anime de "Mechas", pero me doy cuenta de que "Dandadan" funciona con cualquier género extravagante, por lo que absolutamente todo puede pasar y ser consistente con temáticas bizarras: de alguna forma, logra equilibrar los distintos tonos que plantean para ser sumamente versátil con su tipo de contenido. Me refiero a la comedia absurda y al drama que apela hacia lo sentimental, también la acción épica que nunca está de más, son tantas cosas que usualmente cuando se mezclan solo causan desastres, pero de alguna forma son cosas que pueden coexistir en balance.
Conforme avanza la historia se desarrolla un trasfondo en las motivaciones de los nuevos alienígenas y espíritus que aparecen, poco a poco este Romcom se convierte en un shonen; las situaciones en las que se ven envueltos Momo y Okarun escalan en dificultad al lidiar con enemigos más poderosos. La narrativa te da ciertos momentos de respiro (Pero estos son muy breves).
Los mejores momentos que destacó en esta temporada son los enfrentamientos que tiene Okarun con el espíritu maligno "Evil Eye", hay como 2 o 3 peleas a lo largo de la temporada, pero en términos de mejor animación, las peleas contra Evil Eye son magistrales: Los movimientos similares al fútbol usando un balón hecho de almas en pena son alucinantes. A esto se le suma una banda sonora que impulsa la adrenalina en el oyente al ver las secuencias.
Pero sin importar que tan increíble se vea una serie, está no funcionaría si no fuera gracias a sus personajes. La relación entre Momo Ayase y Okarun se vuelve cada vez más íntima conforme siguen teniendo alocadas aventuras. La llegada de Jiji y Aisha añade una dinámica de mucho más divertida al involucrar amistad, y rivalidad impulsada por los celos. Pero cuando creía que eso sería más que suficiente, resulta que llegan más personajes nuevos que se involucran en estás locas aventuras; Cómo Kinta Sakata y Bamora.
Hasta los momentos no me quedaba claro quien era el protagonista de la obra, si Momo o Okarun, pero me di cuenta de que ambos tienen un rol complementario con el otro, así que este sería el caso de una obra con coprotagonistas. Si tuviera que escoger un favorito, ese sería Okarun por ganar muchísima más confianza en sí mismo conforme avanza la historia (No lo hace a pasos agigantados, pero eso lo respeto, porque un progreso es un progreso), ha demostrando ser un personaje capaz de darlo todo por lo que creé, mientras que Momo sigue siendo la chica ruda pero de gran corazón que mantiene al equipo unido. Verlos apoyarse mutuamente es como ser testigo del verdadero amor en Dandadan.
La primera y segunda temporada de Dandadan fueron una maravilla disfrutable, fue más de lo que esperaba y cuando termine de ver el ultimo episodio, me fui a leer el manga. Y solo me queda esperar ver animado lo que vendrá a continuación en la historia que se adaptara. Solo puedo decir que lo que se avecina en la tercera temporada sera grande, emotivo y se pondrá aun mejor. Creo que es uno de los mejores animes de la actualidad, me quedo claro que no es solo una comedia de acción extravagante, sino una historia con muchísimo corazón. Si la primera temporada te enganchó, esta segunda te va a encantar.
