It’s a beautiful book that blends drama, thriller, and perhaps a touch of survival—it’s hard to pin down an exact genre, but one thing is certain: it’s an excellent read. The story features four main narrators: Valerie (also known as Sparrow), a young woman who challenges herself by tackling increasingly difficult hikes—this time taking on the Appalachians; her hiking partner, an overweight man who is very close to her but lacks self-confidence; Lena, an elderly woman in a wheelchair with a passion for the woods and herbs, who shares these hobbies with an online best friend; and Dev, a veteran forest ranger nearing retirement who is an expert at search-and-rescue operations. The plot revolves around Valerie’s disappearance after she fails to show up for a scheduled meeting with her husband. Everyone had advised against this particular route because it was long and arduous; furthermore, she had to tackle it alone because her hiking partner was forced to turn back due to a family bereavement. Valerie isn't an expert hiker—she puts a lot of heart and effort into it, but she lacks expertise in survival techniques and navigating rugged terrain. Officer Bev begins the search with optimism; the area is vast, but she initially believes Valerie has simply strayed from the trail and perhaps sustained a minor injury, remaining close to where she was last seen. However, the initial searches prove fruitless; Valerie seems to have vanished into thin air, and as the days go by, everyone grows increasingly worried and less hopeful.

At the same time, her hiking companion is consumed by guilt for not having completed the trail with her and shares everything he can with the police—including details about Valerie’s strange relationship with her husband. Then there is Lena, a woman following the disappearance from afar because Valerie reminds her of her own daughter—also a young nurse like the missing woman. Lena is in touch online with a young man who tells her about the mysterious facility near where Valerie vanished, and the two begin to speculate. Will they manage to find Valerie safe and sound? What is really happening in the forest? A truly interesting book; each character's perspective is vividly portrayed, and nothing is quite what it seems. It is a well-written, intriguing book that I highly recommend.
