Good morning, blog friends—how are you? I’m back with you for a trip into the mountains. This time, we crossed the Nievole area to visit the mountain villages overlooking the valley, making our way up into the Pistoia mountains. It was a long journey, but one filled with beautiful hamlets—many of which were new to me, as we had never taken this route leading from Montecatini up into the highlands. After crossing the Nievole Valley, we began our ascent; at first, the landscape was still dotted with houses and settlements—including some charming old stone farmhouses—but as we climbed higher, we began to encounter nature in earnest. The roadside vegetation was wild and somewhat overgrown, with trees, brambles, shrubs, and tall grass. There were a few barren fields here and there and some lovely views, while in the distance, we could already glimpse the mountains that encircle the valley on all sides, stretching toward both Pistoia and Lucca.

Esta vez atravesamos la zona de Nievole para visitar los pueblos de montaña que dominan el valle, ascendiendo hacia la sierra de Pistoia. Fue un trayecto largo, pero repleto de hermosas aldeas; muchas de ellas eran nuevas para mí, ya que nunca habíamos tomado esta ruta que va desde Montecatini hacia las tierras altas. Tras cruzar el valle de Nievole, iniciamos el ascenso; al principio, el paisaje aún estaba salpicado de casas y asentamientos —incluidas algunas encantadoras y antiguas granjas de piedra—, pero a medida que ganábamos altura, empezamos a adentrarnos de lleno en la naturaleza. La vegetación a los lados de la carretera era silvestre y algo frondosa, con árboles, zarzas, arbustos y hierba alta. As we traveled, the landscape became much denser and—thank goodness—the temperature dropped slightly, surely thanks to the many broad-crowned trees providing shade and improving the air quality. Then we arrived at La Sassa, a tiny, charming hamlet in the middle of nowhere; yet, there was a large restaurant there that I’ve read has excellent reviews—we really ought to try it someday! La Sassa is a very small, quiet place surrounded by fields and woods; there are a few barns and many stacks of cut timber, suggesting it’s an area where many lumberjacks work. The surrounding nature is stunning, with plenty of greenery and wooded areas. The houses are few and far between—simple, lovely homes ranging from brightly colored ones to more traditional mountain-style cottages. Anyone living here certainly doesn't have to worry about neighbors or disturbing noise. It is a truly peaceful spot immersed in nature—a real gem in the mountains and exactly the kind of village I love. A medida que avanzábamos, el paisaje se volvía mucho más frondoso y —menos mal— la temperatura bajaba ligeramente, seguramente gracias a los numerosos árboles de copa ancha que proporcionaban sombra y mejoraban la calidad del aire. Luego llegamos a La Sassa, una aldea diminuta y encantadora en medio de la nada; sin embargo, allí había un restaurante grande que, según he leído, cuenta con excelentes críticas: ¡realmente deberíamos probarlo algún día! La Sassa es un lugar muy pequeño y tranquilo, rodeado de campos y bosques; hay algunos graneros y muchas pilas de madera cortada, lo que sugiere que es una zona donde trabajan muchos leñadores. La naturaleza circundante es impresionante, con abundante vegetación y zonas boscosas. Las casas están muy dispersas: viviendas sencillas y bonitas que van desde las de colores vivos hasta las cabañas más tradicionales de estilo montañés. Quien vive aquí, desde luego, no tiene que preocuparse por los vecinos ni por ruidos molestos. Es un lugar verdaderamente apacible e inmerso en la naturaleza; una auténtica joya en la montaña y exactamente el tipo de pueblo que me encanta.
