Good evening, blog friends—how are you? I’m changing scenery a bit today; it’s hot, so my husband and I have swapped our usual countryside hikes for the mountains. We’ve been exploring the Pistoia mountains, visiting new spots and revisiting places we’ve been to in previous years. Today, I’m taking you to the area around Le Piastre, Borro, and Forri. Le Piastre is the main village—a place we often visit around Christmas for its famous nativity scene exhibition, which is renowned throughout Tuscany and something I’ve written about before. Now, I’m taking you into the more wooded, outlying areas—a bit away from the village center—though I’ve also included glimpses of the beautiful main road. It’s one of the busiest routes because it connects to the entire Pistoia mountain range; you practically have to pass through here to reach the mountains. As a crossroads, the area is home to many hotels, restaurants, and various businesses, as well as throngs of summer tourists who rent homes in the village or nearby to escape the heat—it stays very cool here (though I’d say it gets very cold in winter; in fact, the old ice houses used to store winter ice were located here). All in all, it’s a place where you won’t suffer from the heat, especially in the more wooded hamlets.
Buenas tardes, amigos del blog: ¿cómo están? Hoy cambio un poco de aires; hace calor, así que mi marido y yo hemos sustituido nuestras habituales caminatas por el campo por la montaña. Hemos estado explorando la zona montañosa de Pistoia, descubriendo nuevos rincones y revisitando lugares donde ya habíamos estado años atrás. Hoy los llevo a los alrededores de Le Piastre, Borro y Forri. Le Piastre es el pueblo principal, un lugar que visitamos a menudo en Navidad por su famosa exposición de belenes, muy conocida en toda la Toscana y sobre la cual ya he escrito anteriormente. En esta ocasión, los llevo a las zonas boscosas de la periferia —alejándome un poco del centro del pueblo—, aunque también incluyo algunas imágenes de la hermosa carretera principal. Es una de las rutas más transitadas, ya que conecta con toda la sierra de Pistoia; prácticamente es paso obligado para llegar a la montaña. Al ser un punto de paso clave, la zona cuenta con numerosos hoteles, restaurantes y diversos negocios, además de recibir a muchos turistas estivales que alquilan casas en el pueblo o en los alrededores para huir del calor, pues aquí se mantiene un ambiente muy fresco (aunque diría que en invierno hace mucho frío; de hecho, aquí se encontraban las antiguas neveras donde se almacenaba el hielo invernal). En definitiva, es un lugar donde no se sufre por el calor, especialmente en las aldeas más boscosas.
Heading towards the outlying hamlets, you find yourself surrounded by woodland roads; indeed, the area is encircled by forests and mountains—which is perhaps why it is always so cold, as the surrounding peaks block out the sun. However, the air here is fresher, and the water is excellent, too. There are few houses in the hamlets—all nestled in nature and very charming—whereas the main road features various tall, narrow buildings typical of the region. In the more secluded spots, the woods make everything a bit darker; the residents must surely struggle with dampness—poor things. In any case, the scenery is peaceful and picturesque. Al dirigirse hacia las aldeas periféricas, uno se encuentra rodeado de caminos entre bosques; de hecho, la zona está circundada por bosques y montañas, lo que tal vez explique por qué hace siempre tanto frío, ya que las cumbres circundantes bloquean el sol.
