From the Heart of Cumana: Bermudez Square. It’s incredible how, in our city of Cumana, we can find places covered in an impressive canopy of greenery. The vast majority of these spaces are represented by large-scale structures that were built to pay posthumous tribute to figures who laid the foundation for the culture, religion, or sovereignty of our regions. Such is the case with Plaza Jose Francisco Bermudez, which, beyond the blue sky above it, lies beneath the substantial shade of large trees that keep it beautiful day and night. For this reason, this spacious plaza is not only a representation of our past but also the identity of a present and future that has endured for generations.
While it is true that the building is located right in the heart of the city, it is also true that the surrounding area is home almost exclusively to families living in houses that date back to the colonial era. It is an extremely spacious plaza, surrounded by major streets such as Rojas and Junin. Furthermore, there is a rich history right nearby, thanks to the presence of traditional tobacco factories—an economic activity that has endured since ancient times. This site is ideal for all kinds of family, social, and recreational activities; I have personally participated in them.
This is such a popular and family-friendly area that it’s no surprise to hear children laughing as they run, play, or simply ride their skateboards and bicycles. All of this is possible thanks to the plaza’s extensive network of indoor and outdoor walkways. On the other hand, we can be there breathing fresh air without worrying about the sun thanks to the shade provided by the trees, which is why people of all ages gather there to set up their tables and chairs and play the popular game of dominoes. This game seems to have become everyone’s favorite, as it’s a very common sight in many plazas. But anyway, let’s take a stroll through José Francisco Bermúdez Plaza, and you’ll see just how beautiful it is.

Bermudez Square, located in the heart of Cumana, is easily accessible to the whole family and to our visitors. It is situated right next to Bermudez Avenue and is impressively large. Its walkways are extremely wide, and you can enjoy walking through the plaza until you reach the central monument, or simply stroll along the entire perimeter of the plaza.
The floor is made of polished granite and is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic. The walkways are distinguished from the flower beds by their red dividing borders. In addition, right next to it, residents of the neighborhood also have access to a multipurpose sports field where they can participate in various sports activities. It’s worth noting that this field also has a rich history; in fact, I used to play here as a child.
Inside the plaza, we can enjoy many benches strategically placed throughout; they are made of concrete and feature a traditional design. Green in color with a polished concrete surface, they are extremely durable. Now, just as all roads lead to Rome, each of the walkways converges on the central monument honoring Jose Francisco Bermudez. His imposing statue stands on a large pedestal with a base consisting of three steps.
The floor is entirely made of polished granite and appears to be very well maintained; in fact, we see cleaning staff there very early in the morning. As I mentioned earlier, you can see children riding their bikes there, as well as tables with people playing dominoes and other local residents enjoying the shade of the trees.
The large vegetation, consisting of massive trees, is a sight to behold. The plaza features very large planters, and although we also have small plants, there is no grass. However, the main attraction is the canopy of trees covering the plaza, which completely blocks the intense sun of our region. This plaza exudes a sense of coolness and tranquility. At night, the area is well-lit, thanks to the abundant light from LED lamps located on all the light poles—both inside and outside the plaza; the sports court also has lighting that illuminates the square.
All that’s left is to invite you to enjoy these spaces; if you’re in downtown Cumana and need a moment to rest, this plaza is the perfect place to do so. You’ll breathe in fresh air and feel sheltered from the eastern sun. Every space in our region is steeped in culture and history; Bermudez Square is a green oasis in the heart of Cumana. Best regards, and see you soon.
