Sharing these iconic places in our city of Cumana, in the state of Sucre Venezuela, goes beyond simply pointing out coordinates on a map; because it is through our experiences that we can express the region’s traditions and culture. I say this because Cumana is not just beaches; it is not just sunshine. More than that, it is also history, music, and the beautiful legacy left to us by our “Mermaid of Cumana,” Maria Rodriguez. With that in mind, today we’ll take a brief but heartfelt tour of a roundabout that, with great honor and pride, bears the name of this distinguished folk artist.

This Maria Rodriguez Roundabout is an iconic landmark that connects the three pillars of music, culture, and the city. Anyone who doesn’t know María Rodríguez isn’t from around here; anyone who hasn’t danced to and listened to her music isn’t from around here. That’s why, through this humble writing, I invite you to discover a part of our region’s history and culture. The roundabout is located on Fernández de Zerpa Avenue, right across from the square that also bears the name La Sirena—a square you’ll learn about very soon, because here, the voice has become a monument. This roundabout has been remodeled and reopened in honor of the Siren of Cumana.

The roundabout connects to major thoroughfares; for example, if we head south, we continue along Fernandez of Zerpa Avenue until we reach the Benigno Rodriguez Bruzual Roundabout. A little further on, we connect to the La Copita Roundabout and can head toward Gran Mariscal Avenue, Santa Rosa Street, or Montes Street, or come from Sucre and Ayacucho Streets. To the north of the roundabout, we continue along Fernandez de Zerpa Avenue to reach or come from Perimetral Avenue or Cacique Maraguey Avenue, allowing us to enjoy the fabulous Cinta Costera and the majestic Gulf of Cariaco.

As if that weren’t enough, on either side of the Maria Rodriguez Roundabout, we head toward Araya Street, which connects to the Sucre Polyclinic and the Fire Station to the east. To the west is the State Police Headquarters, and if we go further, we come to the Traki Shopping Center. Truly, from this roundabout, we can travel to and from the vast majority of places in the city. For now, we’re already at the meeting point, and the roundabout is very colorful—surrounded by a yellow curb and cross-shaped walkways that converge in the center around a large palm tree.

As I mentioned earlier, we have four walkways with concrete edges and red cobblestones—a very symmetrical design. The walkways form a cross, converging at the center with a circular concrete area adorned with stones or slabs. Closer to the center, there is a round planter made of concrete and stones that holds a large palm tree. The circular area has no benches; however, I’ve seen several people sitting in that planter and enjoying the shade of the leafy palm tree.

As for the vegetation, the roundabout features abundant grass along both sides of each walkway that is just beginning to grow. The roundabout has recently been reopened, and the grass has just been planted. As you can see, there is a large palm tree right in the center. The walkways are lined with varied vegetation on both sides and also feature four square planters; these are decorated with multicolored patterns and contain different types of plants that can withstand the region’s climate. Little by little, we’ll see all these plants grow, and the roundabout will have a much greater visual impact.

We’ll wrap up with the lighting, which consists of LED lights mounted on the poles surrounding the roundabout; all these areas are well lit. This space was designed to ensure proper traffic flow and for pedestrians to enjoy. Believe it or not, even though there are no benches, as evening falls, many people come to the roundabout to enjoy the scenery, chat, and relax while exercising. Redoma María Rodríguez: El Eco de la Sirena. Dar a conocer estos espacios emblemáticos de nuestra ciudad de Cumaná estado Sucre Venezuela, va más allá de solo mostrar coordenadas en un mapa; porque a través de nuestras vivencias, se puede expresar la tradición y cultura de la región. Digo esto, porque Cumaná no solo son playas, no solo es sol; más que eso, también es historia, es música y es el hermoso legado que nos ha dejado nuestra Sirena de Cumaná María Rodríguez. En tal sentido; hoy hacemos un breve, pero sentido recorrido por una redoma, que mucho honor y orgullo lleva el nombre de esta insigne cultora popular.

Esta Redoma María Rodríguez es un punto vial emblemático, que permite la conexión del tridente, música, cultura y ciudad. Quien no conoce a María Rodríguez, es porque no es de esta tierra; quien no ha bailado y escuchado su música, es porque no es de esta tierra. Por ello; desde este humilde escrito, te invito a conocer parte de la historia y cultura de nuestra región. La redoma está ubicada en la Avenida Fernández de Zerpa, justamente al frente de la plaza que también lleva el nombre de La Sirena; plaza de la que sabrán muy pronto, porque aquí, la voz se ha hecho monumento. Una redoma que ha sido remodelada y reinaugurada en honor a la Sirena de Cumaná.

La redoma se conecta con importantes arterias viales; por ejemplo, si vamos hacia al sur, continuamos con la misma Avenida Fernández de Zerpa, hasta llegar a la Redoma Benigno Rodríguez Bruzual. Un poco más allá, nos conectamos con la Redoma La Copita y podemos dirigirnos hacia la Avenida Gran Mariscal, Calle Santa Rosa, Calle Montes o venir desde la Calle Sucre y Ayacucho. Hacia el norte de la redoma, seguimos la misma Fernández de Zerpa, para llegar o venir desde la Avenida Perimetral o Cacique Maraguey y así disfrutar de la fabulosa Cinta Costera y del imponente Golfo de Cariaco.

Por si fuera poco; a los lados de la Redoma María Rodríguez nos ubicamos hacia la Calle Araya, conectando al este con la Policlínica Sucre y la Estación de Bomberos. Al oeste tenemos la Comandancia Policial del Estado y si vamos más allá; nos encontramos con el Centro Comercial Traki. De verdad que desde esta redoma, podernos ir y venir a la gran mayoría de los puntos de la ciudad. Por lo pronto, ya estamos en el punto de encuentro y la redoma tiene mucho colorido; rodeada por un brocal de color amarillo y caminerías en forma de cruz, que se conectan en el centro con un gran árbol de palmeras.

Como dije antes; tenemos cuatro caminerías con bordes de concreto y adoquines en color rojo, una construcción muy simétrica. Las caminerías forman una cruz, para conectarse en el centro con un espacio circular construido en concreto, adornado con piedras o lajas. Más al centro observamos una jardinera redonda, construida en concreto y piedras que contiene una gran palmera. La redoma carece de bancos; sin embargo, he visto a varias personas sentarse en esa jardinera y recibir la sombra de la frondosa palmera.

En cuanto a la vegetación; la redoma cuenta a los lados de cada caminería, con abundante grama en inicio de reproducción. La redoma está recién reinaugurada y la grama está recién plantada. Como pueden observar, se evidencia un gran árbol de palmera en todo el centro. Las comerías tienen variada vegetación a cada lado y también se presentan cuatro jardineras cuadradas; las mismas poseen estampado de varios colores, que albergan distintos tipos de plantas, las cuales pueden aguantar el clima de la región. Poco a poco veremos crecer todas estas plantas y la redoma tendrán mucho más impacto.

Finalizamos con la iluminación y la misma se presenta a través de luces led, colocadas en los postes que están alrededor de la redoma; todos estos espacios están bien iluminados. Un espacio diseñado para la correcta distribución vial y para el disfrute de las personas a pie. Aunque no lo crean; a pesar de no contar con bancos, al caer la tarde muchas personas se acercan a la redoma para disfrutar del paisaje, conversar y relajarse haciendo ejercicios.
