Hola querido hiver.
Hoy vengo con un post con valor emocional más que estético. Hace un mes @pinero me informó vía comentario de que 5 días antes se había inaugurado una exposición de fotografías en mi ciudad en la que una de los expositores es usuaria de Hive: @leasorfro.
Temía que no iba a poder acudir a tiempo de ver la exposición porque llegó una larga ola de calor, pero finalmente el tiempo nos dio una tregua y en la mañana del último día de junio cumplí con el objetivo.
La exposición era en la Cafetería Las Armas. Está situada en una zona céntrica pero apartada de mis recorridos habituales. De hecho, nunca había caminado por esas calles. La cafetería tiene varios ambientes unificados en cuanto a decoración. La estancia fue agradable gracias a que a la hora en que estuve, media mañana, no estaba demasiado concurrida.
Terminado mi café helado acompañado de churro y que se me olvidó fotografiar, me dispuse a admirar y dejar registro, esta vez sí, de las imágenes que adornaban los escasos espacios que no estaban ocupados por los grandes ventanales de la cafetería.
La luz no era óptima para sacar fotos y al estar protegidas por cristal, los reflejos eran inevitables. Pero de todos modos, se puede apreciar la calidad de lo que allí se exponía.
A partir de aquí expongo las fotografías junto al texto que las acompañaba para que puedas aprender y experimentar lo que yo misma viví, aunque la ilusión de retratar el trabajo de otro hiver me lo reservo, jaja.
Cigüeña Blanca (Ciconia ciconia) Localidad de la foto: La Almunia de Doña Godina, Zaragoza Autor: Santiago Heredia Rizo Mide aproximadamente un metro de altura, con una envergadura que supera los dos metros. Es un ave zancuda de plumaje blanco, salvo las puntas de las alas que son negras. Tiene el pico y las patas largos y de color rojo intenso. Es famosa por sus migraciones entre Europa y África, cruzando el estrecho de Gibraltar. Anida en torres, campanarios y postes, donde construye grandes nidos de ramas que reutiliza año tras año. Se alimenta de ranas, lagartijas, Insectos y topillos. Su leyenda de traer bebés es muy conocida, aunque en realidad solo trae tranquilidad a los campos.
Gaviotín Real (Thalasseus maximus) Localidad de la foto: La Habana, Cuba Autor: Alberto Sánchez Castellón El charrán real, gaviotín real, pagaza real o tirra canalera (Thalasseus maximus) es una especie de ave de la familia sternidae, del orden charadrilformes. Se distingue por ser muy grande y poseer un pico largo color naranja.
Zunzún (Riccordia ricordii) Localidad de la foto: Parque Zoológico Nacional, La Habana, Cuba Autor: Alberto Sánchez Castellón Mide unos once centímetros. Es un colibrí de color verde brillante en el dorso y gris claro en el vientre. El macho tiene la garganta azul verdosa; la hembra, más apagada. Se alimenta del néctar de las flores y de pequeños insectos. Vuela muy rápido y puede quedarse quieto en el aire. Es endémico de Cuba y vive en bosques, jardines y sabanas. Hace un nido pequeño con telarañas y líquenes. Mueve las alas unas treinta veces por segundo.
Chillina (Teretistris fernandinae) Localidad de la foto: Pan de Guajaibón, Mayabeque, Cuba Autor: Sorahabell Orduño @leasorfro Mide unos trece centímetros. Tiene la cabeza y la nuca de un amarillo verdoso que parece más amarillo entre las hojas. La garganta y el anillo alrededor del ojo también son amarillos. El resto del cuerpo es gris, con el vientre más claro. Es endémica del occidente de Cuba, incluyendo Cienfuegos, la Isla de la Juventud y algunos cayos. Se alimenta de insectos, arañas y pequeñas lagartijas que busca en la vegetación baja y en el suelo. Su nombre viene de su canto: un "chilleo" constante. No es arisca, se deja ver. Anida de marzo a julio en ramas finas o sobre epífitas.
Cartacuba (Todus multicolor) Localidad de la foto: Complejo Morro-Cabaña, La Habana, Cuba Autor: Michel M. Izquierdo Mide unos once centímetros. Es pequeña, de colores vivos: verde esmeralda, garganta roja y vientre blanco. Se alimenta de insectos pequeños que atrapa al vuelo. También come frutas. Vive en bosques húmedos y cerca de arroyos. Es endémica de Cuba. La pareja construye el nido en túneles que excavan en barrancos o troncos podridos. Tiene un pico largo y plano, ideal para atrapar sus presas entre las hojas. Es inquieta, no para de moverse. Son fieles y se quedan juntos toda la vida.
Carpintero Verde (Xiphidiopicus percussus) Localidad de la foto: Zoológico Nacional, La Habana, Cuba Autor: Michel M. Izquierdo Mide unos veintidós centímetros. Es endémico, es el único pájaro carpintero que vive solo en Cuba. Su dorso es verde olivo, su vientre tiene rayas blancas y negras. El macho tiene la coronilla roja; la hembra, negra. Se alimenta de insectos que saca de la corteza de los árboles con su pico fuerte. También come frutas. Hace el nido en huecos que él mismo perfora en troncos blandos. Su canto es un "pik-pik-pik" seco y rápido.
Zunzuncito (Mellisuga helenae) Localidad de la foto: Casa Ana Birdings, Ciénaga de Zapata, Matanzas Autor: Sorahabell Orduño @leasorfro El pájaro más pequeño del mundo. Mide unos cinco centímetros y pesa menos que una moneda. Su aleteo es tan rápido que parece un zumbido. De ahí su nombre. Se alimenta de néctar y de pequeños insectos. Es endémico de Cuba: no vive en ningún otro lugar del planeta. La hembra hace un nido en forma de tacita con telarañas y líquenes. Sus huevos son del tamaño de un grano de café.
Sabanero (Sturnella magna) Localidad de la foto: Parque Zoológico Nacional, La Habano, Cuba Autor: Alberto Sánchez Castellón Mide unos veinticuatro centímetros. Es un ave de cuerpo robusto, con el pecho amarillo brillante atravesado por una característica "V negra en forma de media luna. El dorso es pardo terroso con rayas oscuras, perfecto para camuflarse en el pastizal. Tiene la cola corta y el pico largo y puntiagudo. Vive en sabanas, pastizales abiertos y pampas. Se alimenta de insectos y semillas en el suelo. Es famoso por su canto melódico y flautado, muy variado según la región. No vuela bien a larga distancia; prefiere caminar o correr entre la hierba. Su nido va escondido en el suelo, cubierto con un techo de pasto.
La verdad es que de pájaros entiendo entre poco y nada. Pero salí de allí muy feliz por haber logrado estar presente en la exposición y por aprender algo sobre estas criaturas tan hermosas. Pese a estar en medio de una ciudad me sentí por un rato como en plena naturaleza y disfrutando de sus maravillas.

Hi, dear hiver.
Today I’m sharing a post that’s more emotionally charged than aesthetically pleasing. A month ago, @pinero let me know via a comment that a photography exhibition had opened in my city five days earlier, featuring a Hive user: @leasorfro.
I was worried I wouldn’t be able to make it in time to see the exhibition because of a long heatwave, but eventually the weather gave us a break and, on the morning of the last day of June, I managed to do just that.
The exhibition was at the Las Armas Café. It’s situated in a central area but off my usual routes. In fact, I’d never walked along those streets before. The café has several areas, all with a consistent décor. My visit was pleasant because, at the time I was there – mid-morning – it wasn’t too busy.
Having finished my iced coffee with a churro – which I forgot to photograph – I set about admiring and, this time, making sure to capture the images that adorned the few spaces not taken up by the café’s large windows.
The light wasn’t ideal for taking photos and, as the works were protected by glass, reflections were inevitable. But even so, you can appreciate the quality of what was on display there.
From here on, I’ll be sharing the photographs alongside the text that accompanied them so that you can learn about and experience what I myself experienced, although I’ll keep the pleasure of photographing the work of other Hiver to myself, haha.
White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) Photo location: La Almunia de Doña Godina, Zaragoza Photographer: Santiago Heredia Rizo It measures approximately one metre in height, with a wingspan exceeding two metres. It is a wading bird with white plumage, except for the tips of its wings, which are black. It has a long, bright red beak and legs. It is famous for its migrations between Europe and Africa, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar. It nests on towers, bell towers and poles, where it builds large nests of twigs that it reuses year after year. It feeds on frogs, lizards, insects and voles. The legend that it brings babies is well known, although in reality it only brings tranquillity to the countryside.
Royal Tern (Thalasseus maximus) Photo location: Havana, Cuba Photographer: Alberto Sánchez Castellón The royal tern, gaviotín real, pagaza real or tirra canalera (Thalasseus maximus) is a species of bird in the Sternidae family, of the Charadriiformes order. It is distinguished by its large size and long orange beak.
Zunzún (Riccordia ricordii) Photo location: National Zoological Park, Havana, Cuba Photographer: Alberto Sánchez Castellón It measures around eleven centimetres. It is a hummingbird with a bright green back and a pale grey belly. The male has a blue-green throat; the female’s is more muted. It feeds on flower nectar and small insects. It flies very fast and can hover in mid-air. It is endemic to Cuba and lives in forests, gardens and savannahs. It builds a small nest out of cobwebs and lichens. It flaps its wings about thirty times per second.
Chillina (Teretistris fernandinae) Photo location: Pan de Guajaibón, Mayabeque, Cuba Photographer: Sorahabell Orduño @leasorfro It measures around thirteen centimetres. Its head and nape are a greenish-yellow that appears more yellow amongst the leaves. The throat and the ring around the eye are also yellow. The rest of its body is grey, with a paler underbelly. It is endemic to western Cuba, including Cienfuegos, the Isle of Youth and some cays. It feeds on insects, spiders and small lizards, which it hunts in low vegetation and on the ground. Its name comes from its call: a constant ‘chilleo’. It is not shy and can often be seen. It nests from March to July on slender branches or on epiphytes.
Cartacuba (Todus multicolor) Photo location: Morro-Cabaña Complex, Havana, Cuba Photographer: Michel M. Izquierdo It measures around eleven centimetres. It is small and brightly coloured: emerald green, with a red throat and white belly. It feeds on small insects which it catches in flight. It also eats fruit. It lives in damp forests and near streams. It is endemic to Cuba. The pair build their nest in tunnels they dig in ravines or rotten logs. It has a long, flat beak, ideal for catching its prey amongst the leaves. It is restless and never stops moving. They are faithful and stay together for life.
Green Woodpecker (Xiphidiopicus percussus) Photo location: National Zoo, Havana, Cuba Photographer: Michel M. Izquierdo It measures around twenty-two centimetres. It is endemic; it is the only woodpecker found exclusively in Cuba. Its back is olive green, and its belly has black and white stripes. The male has a red crown; the female’s is black. It feeds on insects which it extracts from tree bark using its strong beak. It also eats fruit. It builds its nest in holes that it drills itself into soft tree trunks. Its call is a sharp, rapid “pik-pik-pik”.

It measures about five centimetres and weighs less than a coin. Its wingbeat is so rapid that it sounds like a buzz. Hence its name. It feeds on nectar and small insects. It is endemic to Cuba: it is found nowhere else on the planet. The female builds a cup-shaped nest using cobwebs and lichens. Its eggs are the size of a coffee bean.
Great Grassquit (Sturnella magna) Photo location: National Zoological Park, Havana, Cuba Photographer: Alberto Sánchez Castellón It measures around twenty-four centimetres. It is a robust bird with a bright yellow breast crossed by a distinctive black, crescent-shaped ‘V’. Its back is earthy brown with dark stripes, perfect for camouflage in the grassland. It has a short tail and a long, pointed beak. It lives in savannahs, open grasslands and pampas. It feeds on insects and seeds on the ground. It is famous for its melodious, flute-like song, which varies greatly depending on the region. It is not a good long-distance flyer; it prefers to walk or run through the grass. Its nest is hidden on the ground, covered with a thatched roof of grass.
The truth is, I know next to nothing about birds. But I left feeling very happy to have been able to visit the exhibition and to have learnt something about these beautiful creatures. Despite being in the middle of a city, for a while I felt as though I were out in the heart of nature, enjoying its wonders.
