There is something fascinating about what human hands can do.

Give two people the same material and you can get completely different results. One person sees an ordinary piece of fabric, wood, metal or paper. Another sees something that does not exist yet, but somehow knows how to bring it into existence. We call this talent. But I wonder how much of what we call talent is actually the result of years of doing something badly before finally learning how to do it well.
That is why I have never been completely convinced that talent alone explains what some people are capable of doing. A gift may give someone an advantage, but discipline determines what happens to that advantage. There are people with natural ability who never develop it. There are also people who may not appear particularly gifted at first but become remarkably good because they refuse to stop learning. What we are given at the beginning may matter less than what we decide to do with it.
But a gift can also become wasted. You can have the ability to make beautiful things and never take it seriously. You can keep waiting for the perfect opportunity, the perfect equipment, the perfect environment or somebody to recognise you. Meanwhile, the ability is sitting there unused. That is one of the biggest tragedies of talent. Not that some people do not have it, but that some people have it and never discover how far it could have taken them.
