General Zod: The Especiesist Mentality of the Last Pure Kryptonian 🫔🫔, Character Review

How can I judge a villain when I see that he’s right, when his alien way of seeing things has a well-defined purpose and is noble from his species’ perspective? šŸ¤”šŸ¤” I’ve always been fascinated by villains in the world of superheroes; when they’re written with vision and ambition, that’s when they raise ideological debates that are difficult to answer, since they cease to be villains and become human beings 🄹🄹. This review focuses on a very dark character, as he was born, shaped, and presented in a way that clashes with today’s standards regarding the audience’s perception of what a villain is supposed to be. He logically makes you wonder whether he’s right or wrong when you analyze his speech carefully—and that’s pure cinema šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜Ž

General Zod, masterfully portrayed by actor Michael Shannon, is the main antagonist of the now-classic 2013 film Man of Steel, on which this review will focus—so that, inspired by it, you’ll be motivated to watch the movie where his proud struggle to save his species, in his own way, unfolds šŸ¤” šŸ¤”

Don’t focus on his fists—focus on his speech. I shared a video at the beginning of this review; I hope you’ve hit play, since it’s invaluable for the analytical approach of this review and will help you understand the character’s point of view. In it, I imitate—as only I in the community can—the villain’s voice while reciting his iconic lines 🤩🤩 to explain the motivation behind the last Kryptonian General's actions 🫔🫔

I’d like to share an interview from that now-distant era with actor Michael Shannon. I firmly believe that the actor managed to take this character further by giving him a speciesist mindset; he developed a narrative ambition that made the character ideologically human šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

You have to step into the Kryptonian’s shoes—metaphorically speaking—to understand his motivations based on his dialogue. This is the part that clashes most with most people, since villains are usually seen as simply ā€œbad peopleā€ who act that way for no reason 😐😐.... Zod doesn’t invite you to see him that way; he speaks forcefully to make you understand his life’s purpose, which is the survival of his species at all costs 🧬 🧬

Zod was created solely to protect Krypton 🫔🫔

We’re spoiled by wanting to have the freedom to choose, and we apply this idea—as if it were the right thing—to everything we know. We call that freedom and mistakenly think it must be that way in everything, forgetting that culture also plays a role.... Zod comes from a Kryptonian culture, which is the exact opposite of freedom, since he was designed for one thing only: to defend Krypton

To understand this, you have to imagine that Krypton is to him what your home is to you—along with everything that term represents: family, a place to belong, and your fellow humans 🄲🄲

When I look at it this way, the character rises to the intellectual level he’s meant to convey, because he’s a metaphorical representation of the consequences of any war.

We, as an audience and as humans, would see Zod as an alien who wants to destroy us without valuing our opinions… but how many other animal species has our human species driven to extinction without valuing their opinions, simply because we considered them inferior? šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

It’s precisely this last point that makes many people detest Zod’s personality—not because he does bad things, but because, by nature, we hate that he sees us as inferior, and that’s an insult to our great human pride 😤😤

His condescending personality comes through when he tells Kal-El where he trained; Kal grew up on a farm, and Zod views that as something inferior. That part of his speech shows us that his nobility in protecting his species is underpinned by an inflated ego that distorts the General’s noble thoughts.

Having been raised as a warrior—as he mentions in his speech—his soldier’s mindset blinds him because he lacks a diplomatic sensibility.... I struggle quite a bit with diplomacy because, in reality, it often ends up being hypocritical šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

But diplomacy—when it works, it works. Its major weakness is time; it takes too long because it requires people to make concessions in order to negotiate.... On this very point, Zod won’t budge—that’s the complicated part about this great villain who will never give an inch, and in my view, I see that as something to admire since he isn’t a hypocrite. In these details, I’d love to be exactly like him 🤩🤩

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess, we called her chiquito, she is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence was valuable and the most beautiful thing that will exist in my heart and soul.
