"The law of attraction: how far yes and how far no" [Eng-Esp]

Hello, Town Square community. Today I want to share with you a personal reflection that blends my training as a psychiatrist with an open mind —but also with the filter of scientific thinking— about a topic that generates both hope and skepticism: the law of attraction. Let's explore together how far it has foundation and how far it becomes a dangerous narrative.

The first time I heard about this law was in a consultation. A relative of a patient, after I had given her guidance on her treatment, asked me if I had heard of "The Secret." She briefly told me what it was about and, enthusiastically, lent me a flash drive so I could watch Rhonda Byrne's documentary. I accepted out of professional curiosity and because, honestly, I am interested in anything related to the human mind.

While watching the documentary, there were moments I found fascinating. The idea that our thoughts generate frequencies that attract similar realities echoes what we observe in consultation: patients who repeat mental patterns and end up confirming their own beliefs, for better or worse. In the part where they talked about the power of gratitude, I paused the video to reflect. And yes, there is solid evidence that practicing gratitude improves emotional well-being. That is not magic; it is neurobiology.

However, when I heard that Da Vinci, Einstein, and other great humanists knew "The Secret" and kept it to themselves, my skepticism kicked in. I asked myself: how is it possible that people who dedicated their lives to the advancement of knowledge would hide a truth that, if true, would have transformed humanity? That does not fit. Neither with Da Vinci, who shared everything in his notebooks, nor with Einstein, who advocated for scientific dissemination. If there had ever been such a simple key to happiness and success, history would have been very different.

How far yes?

From a psychiatric perspective, I recognize that thought influences reality. The placebo effect is an irrefutable example: believing that something will heal us produces real physiological changes. We also know that the brain has plasticity: what we think and repeat shapes our neural connections. Thinking positively, setting clear goals, and maintaining an open attitude increases the likelihood of finding opportunities. That is not mystical attraction; it is selective attention: if you look for something, your brain detects it more easily.

How far no?

Where the law of attraction stumbles is when it becomes a magical formula that ignores context, genetics, chance, and social structures. Saying that a person got sick because they thought about illness is cruel and false. Saying that poverty is the fault of negative thoughts ignores history, economics, and inequality. Thought is powerful, but not omnipotent. No one attracts an accident, a war, or a serious diagnosis through their energetic vibration.

What I take away

The documentary left me with valuable things: the importance of visualizing, focusing on what you want, being grateful, letting go of fear. But it also left me with the certainty that these are psychological resources, not unbreakable universal laws. They work when integrated with action, strategy, social support, and sometimes medication or therapy.

So I believe in the power of the mind, but without guilt or false promises. The law of attraction is a useful metaphor, but not an instruction manual. Let us use it to inspire ourselves, not to judge ourselves. Life is more complex and also more beautiful than an equation of thought and outcome.

And in the end, what attracts most is coherence: thinking, feeling, and acting in the same direction. That does work. Always.

Siempre.
