A Look at the Virgen del Valle Church and Its Surroundings (Eng/Esp)

English version

Walking through the streets of Cumana and other corners of Sucre State is a delightful experience, not only because it brings me into contact with nature but also because of the satisfaction of discovering a different world unfolding before my eyes. I feel that my sense of wonder remains intact, just as it did when I was a child. Sometimes, you just have to let yourself be carried along by the paths, allow your footsteps to lead you in unknown directions, and embrace that adventure.

The city is constantly in motion; every day it renews itself and evolves in its own way. With that in mind, today’s stroll takes me to Avenida Perimetral, near the well-known Virgen del Valle Church, a religious sanctuary with a minimalist design. I’ve had the chance to visit it several times, and it’s very welcoming.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of this space is its large garden, where the figure of the Virgin is crafted from numerous stones arranged to form her classic white-painted image, with every detail of her dress faithfully reproduced. Another distinctive element is the immense metal structure—which also represents the Virgin of the Valley—located high above and visible from a great distance. These unique features make this church one-of-a-kind and easily recognizable.

In front of the church is a very colorful mural whose central figure is Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, who was beatified in 2021 and has been venerated for decades by several generations of devotees. The legacy of this distinguished Venezuelan physician has had such a profound impact that his beatification by the Catholic Church had been long anticipated due to the countless miracles attributed to him; he is considered the most important religious figure ever born in this country.

In the background of the mural, you can make out the Venezuelan flag and other landmarks of the city, such as the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia, the Cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Inés, the Virgen del Valle Church, the statue of the Indigenous Man that was moved to the outskirts of the city, and the statue of the Monk and the Indigenous Man located at the Monument. In Cumaná, there’s always art on the walls—creations that often make us pause for a moment to admire the work of their creators.
