Exploring the Jose Marti Dome (Eng/Esp)

English version

This time, my steps took me to the José Martí roundabout, a junction where several major avenues meet and which, of course, allows for more efficient traffic flow in this area, given that it is located near the Antonio Patricio de Alcalá Hospital. This roundabout was remodeled several months ago, so it is still in very good condition.

Although it’s an important location, it turns out that it isn’t a very common landmark for giving directions, since people aren’t used to mentioning it by name; it’s more common to hear places like “La Mansión del Pan,” “Banco Fondo Común,” “Ekonomart,” or “Los chinos de la Miranda” mentioned when referring to a nearby location.

This time, my goal was to buy fruits and vegetables for little Alma, and it turns out that there are two large stores located just before and after José Martí Square that are so similar that people often confuse their names or simply refer to them as “Los gochos”—the ones downstairs and the ones upstairs. The same thing happens with the two schools located very close to each other in this area, right across from the plaza; in this case, people refer to them as “the one on this side of the street and the one on the other side.”

I admit that the same thing happens to me; for years, I got used to seeing this roundabout as just another one, since there was nothing striking about it to make it stand out. However, a lot has changed, and now it’s a space with all the right elements: ornamental plants, concrete benches, LED lights, flags, gardens, and, of course, the bust and a plaque identifying Martí.

In any case, I'm already getting used to using the bottle as a reference point for finding addresses, thereby giving it the recognition it deserves now that it has taken on its new identity.
