Virgen of Valle Grotto (Eng/Esp)

English version

My walk along Carúpano Avenue took me to the Grotto of the Virgin of the Valley, a place filled with faith and devotion. Here stands the statue of the Virgin, venerated by the community’s residents, who constantly bring flowers to her statue as a sign of gratitude and in keeping with a tradition in eastern Venezuela.

This site was designed and built following the same model as the Grotto of Our Lady of Carmen, located in the Basilica of Saint Agnes. Along the path, there are stations featuring images that represent key symbols of the Catholic faith.

This space is quite spacious, featuring ceramic walkways and gardens with various ornamental plants and beautiful flowers. Some very elegant concrete and brick benches are provided so that visitors can meditate in peace.

This grotto is located at the foot of Cerro Pan de Azúcar; its construction is simple yet neat and beautiful. The cobblestone walls add a touch of good taste, especially when you notice the seashells embedded along them—many of which were found during construction.

It’s important to keep in mind that the sea once lapped at the base of Pan de Azúcar Hill—even the San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle was close to the shore—but the strong earthquakes and numerous seismic events that have occurred over the past few centuries have caused the sea to recede, which is why it’s very likely to find shells, marine fossils, and even significant amounts of sand in various parts of the city.

It’s very pleasant to be here; I spent quite a while in the shade of two large palm trees, reminiscing about other grottoes and religious monuments I’ve visited in the past. Although this spot doesn’t look particularly majestic, it’s quite intimate and definitely a peaceful place.
