Rock formations have their own charm—at least that’s how I see it. For several years now, I’ve been taking an interest in natural landforms because they have interesting shapes, and some of these rocks or mineral fragments turn out to be significant geological discoveries.
This time, I explored Pan de Azúcar Hill from a different perspective, starting from the Gruta de la Virgen del Valle in Caigüire and setting out from there until I reached the renowned Alberto Müller Rojas High School; at first glance, the hill looked like a giant curtain. I then made my way through the community of San Martín and walked through its narrow streets; the number of houses on the slopes of this mountain is truly impressive.
For several decades now, people have been moving to the suburbs to stay close to their workplaces or areas where there are sources of income; as a result, they can be seen settling on the hills, which have gone from being green to being deforested to make way for housing. I have no doubt that the view is breathtaking; from up high, you can see much of the city of Cumaná and much of the Gulf of Cariaco.
These makeshift settlements make the hill look quite barren, as if it were a vast mountain of sand. I climbed a bit to get better angles for taking photos, and although I didn’t have the right shoes for it, the adventure is always a pleasure. Everyone I observed from here was engrossed in a job or task, walking hurriedly from one place to another.Although the view is wonderful, I’m not in favor of living on the slopes of a hill because heavy rain causes landslides—the ground gives way and sweeps everything in its path. Nature reclaims its space, and we have no choice but to move away.
