Exploring the Santa Maria of the head Castle (Eng/Esp)

English version

I had wanted to visit the Santa Maria de la Cabeza Castle for a long time; I was filled with curiosity every time I saw the small chapel from Bartolome Salom Street. I started doing some research to find out where the entrance to these ancient ruins was, and I walked through the Historic District in search of useful information to help me reach my goal. Surprisingly, there were passersby who were just as lost as I was; they even sent me to San Francisco Street and around Plaza Ribero.

Finally, I ran into a former coworker who was on his way to his godchildren’s graduation Mass at the Basilica of Santa Ines; he told me that the entrance to the castle was right by the church. Although this event was scheduled, I went over anyway to get more information about it. When I mentioned that I was alone, they let me in, but told me that the tour guides were busy with other events.

The entrance is near the Lourdes Grotto; I went in that way via a flight of stairs. The area is surrounded by railings that serve as a safety barrier. The view is incredible; on one side, you can see the side of the Basilica of Saint Agnes, majestic as always. You can also see the rooftops of some houses and the lush vegetation typical of this area.

The only building visible here is a small chapel, painted beige and white with beautiful designs along its edges and a large wooden door. Inside are some plaster figures; this space is used for prayer—a more intimate sanctuary for the faithful.

Another striking feature of this place is the floor, which is covered with various stones. There are also some statues adorning the gardens, which are beautiful though sparsely vegetated. Since I was alone, I was able to enjoy the place in all its splendor; I was given complete freedom to explore and discover, a situation I took full advantage of.

The Santa Maria de la Cabeza Castle became the most important in Cumana by 1673, as it served as the city’s main barracks and military garrison, as well as the residence of Governor Sancho Fernandez de Angulo y Sandoval. However, the powerful earthquake of 1797 destroyed the fortress; those ruins are still visible from Sucre Street, next to the Basilica of Santa Ines.
