Fascinating images and maritime anecdotes (Eng/Esp)

English version

The beach continues to offer me fascinating sights; I’m heading towards the famous Cruz de Caigüire, where once again my senses were delighted. The contrast of shadows is striking; I love this place because it’s surrounded by silvery button mangroves, which glisten when the sun’s rays grow stronger.

I stood gazing out at the sea for a while from the wooden railing. This place of faith and spirituality allows us to reflect on the transience of life and the value of savouring every moment, especially when we already have a few experiences tucked away in our treasure chest of memories. Sitting here to think and breathe in the fresh air is a very relaxing experience.

To one side is the area where the boats are moored; there were several on the shore, as is usually the case, whilst others remained anchored nearby, waiting for their outboard motors to be fitted so they could set sail again.

On the shore, I saw several fishermen carrying out maintenance on their boats. Looking after these boats is a task that requires hours of dedication and effort, as it calls for knowledge of carpentry and, of course, of how to treat the wood, which is usually made of teak or red cedar planks. Each boat must be in optimal condition to avoid any unforeseen incidents on the high seas.

I was a silent, contemplative observer whilst the fishermen and their assistants went about their work – the daily routine that is part of their lives – whilst I took a break from my own, stepping away from home and work to seek refuge in a setting different from the usual one. I admit that fishing isn’t really a woman’s trade; it’s a job that requires considerable physical effort, and setting out at dawn only to return at daybreak is no task for a mother; that’s why I can’t even imagine myself getting involved in a fishing expedition.
