English version
Rafael Urdaneta Square welcomes us with open arms to explore a new corner of the city. This public space honors this hero of independence, a loyal companion of Simón Bolívar in his battles in the western part of the country. This place is often a sort of urban oasis, since you can rest for a while and even grab a bite to eat—there’s a bakery and a large grocery store nearby.
This plaza is located relatively close to downtown and marks the start of a shortcut from La Paz Street to the Ciudad Traki Shopping Center and its surrounding area. You’ll notice that the people who spend time here are local residents—mostly older adults who enjoy chatting—which is why they can spend hours there.
As usual, little Alma came along with me and enjoyed the walk—even more than I did. She ran around the place as if it were an amusement park; she has a vivid imagination, so that was enough for her to build huge castles and transform herself into a beautiful princess, the heroine of her own fairy tale.
The plaza has beautiful gardens, and while we were there, the city’s cleaning crew was performing maintenance—a very common sight in the early morning hours. It’s nice to see how the plants and trees come to life thanks to regular watering.
There’s also a bust of Urdaneta here, but the elements and the passage of time have taken their toll on it, which is why it looks weathered and the hero’s face is unrecognizable.
Going for a walk with Baby Bee is a very pleasant experience; she always brightens up any outing with her antics. And even though she can be quite mischievous at times, I cherish her presence and company. Every day I thank God for her life and the joys she brings us.
