The country where I live—Venezuela—does not experience the four seasons found in other parts of the world. We have two climatic periods defined by rainfall: we simply call them summer (the dry season) and winter (the rainy season), with variations between the two. I know the topic isn't really about the weather, but rather the changes that life itself brings us; sometimes, we link these changes to the times that mark our journey on earth.
Throughout our lives, we have all experienced our own "springtimes"—those special moments we have lived for and truly enjoyed. Here in Spain, we are currently entering autumn; it is starting to get cold, and we are seeing some heavy rains.
But next week, when I return to Venezuela, I know I won't be stepping into a springtime. I am facing a grueling period of heat, compounded by long hours without electricity. I know this because when I asked my niece and son what I should bring them—besides chocolates—they simply told me to buy a rechargeable fan, warning that I would be sweating buckets in the heat. So, I know I am not heading into a spring. I also don't know the state of my plants and flowers given the water shortages, or if my son has grown tired of hauling buckets to water them. I’m not going to dwell on that; when I arrive, I’ll find out exactly what kind of summer awaits me.
There will be no more stories of trips to places with castles or museums; all that will remain are tales of our daily lives and how we bring out the best in each other at work. Spring break is over, and summer is just around the corner.
I have faced many changes and adapt well to them, always trying to find the positive side of any situation. I haven't lost hope for the economic recovery of my Venezuela. I want all the good things I see on my travels for my country. It is important that we have learned the lesson that we only truly possess what we earn through our own work, not by appropriating the fruits of someone else's labor.
I can't complain; I’ve had a wonderful spring here in Spain, having arrived in May and now returning to Venezuela in October. It has been filled with so many memories and moments. Yet, I know what I am facing and what I am returning to, and many people ask me why I don’t just stay here. It isn’t easy—despite the difficulties I know I’ll face there in buying medication for my respiratory issues, and knowing I don’t earn enough to fully repair the wear and tear on my house. But I am going to work hard to get it into tip-top shape. That will be my best spring.
