Visiting Fort Ebey State Park

Yesterday we spent the most incredible day exploring Fort Ebey State Park on Whidbey Island, and it is an absolute must-visit!

We started our hike by winding through the deep, mossy forests before hitting the Bluff Trail. The views blew us away! The trail hugs the cliff edge, giving us a front-row view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains.

Right off the trail, we explored the historic gun battery. Built in 1942 during World War II, this fort was part of the "Triangle of Fire" defense system designed to protect Puget Sound from enemy ships. Walking into the dark, concrete underground bunkers felt like stepping into a time machine. We didn't spend much time there as it was dark and not very welcoming.

There were also some bunkers that had a perfect view of the ocean:

Afterward, we headed down the bluffs to the rugged, driftwood-lined shoreline. We spent some time hunting for unique rocks and listening to the ocean crash against the stones.

Whether you are a history buff or just love a great coastal hike, Fort Ebey is a great island adventure. We already can't wait to go back!

There is a cost to enter the Fort Ebey State Park: $10 for a day pass or $45 for an annual pass. We decided to go for the day pass as we don't visit State parks very often.

After the hike we were quite hungry and decided to go to one of our favorite restaurants on Whidbey Island: The Oyster Catcher.

This was Thursday at five in the evening in a small town of Coupville and we had reservations, but to get in you have to stand in line:

One thing that was kind of weird was that their menus were printed with a terrible printer so bad that you could not read anything 🤔

The fonts were broken up and so faint that we had to guess what was on the food and drink menus. The food was outstanding and well worth the wait and menu fiasco.

My wife ordered fresh Halibut, our daughter went for the grilled Spanish Octopus and absolutely loved it. And I decided to try the linguine pasta with scallops this time.

The dishes were not very large but absolutely delicious and everything had super fresh vegetables because they are a farm to table restaurant.

This time we decided to skip the drinks and just had water to cleanse the pallet. We also had desserts and my wife had coffee with her bignettes. I went for the Rose and Cardamom house made ice-cream that was perfect and our daughter went for chocolate mousse with whipped cream and fresh berries.

There is only one place on the Whidbey Island that might be better though we have not tried the new chefs cooking yet. But that place is $200 per person plus 20% service charge and we spent just over two hundred dollars for the three of us including the tip of thirty five dollars.

When we got home we did some raking of the leafs and then we went to the sauna to relax. I was so tired and relaxed after sauna that I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow.

  • Wow amazing there's a state park on Whidbey Island. Thank you for taking us along on a new adventure. The view in town is lovely. Glad that even though you had to fall in line to get in, the good food made it worth the while. Your desserts sound yummy too. 😋 Always leave room for dessert, I'd always say. 😅 Enjoy your weekend!
