Maggie's Community Gets Its First Real Test

Dead City Episode 3, name Emigrants is a very spot on name for it beuase now all of the sudden a flare is seen crossing the sky, Renata, Maggie and Negan run to see what is happening, when they arrived at the beach they seem that is arriving two groups of people into Manhattan, one from Belleville and the other from Newark, they are rival but it doesn't matter at least in that moment because both groups have brought many injured people into the community, both group are basically in desperate mode because of the violence that happened across the river, so they decided to follow the light the night before just hopping to find help. In this moment Maggie is tested as a leader because the arrival of the Belleville and Newark groups forces her to figure out what kind of community she really wants to build, her intentions are not to just survive anymore but to grow, if you have seen the OG series by now you would know that for this series its just the same thing. At the end Maggie and Renata were pushed to accept both groups no matter their internal problems, Renata started taking the decisions, the group from Belleville will go to the hospital, while Newark stayed in the beach. On the other hand there's Negan being the skeptical one here and I think it helps a lot because he is not wrong about it, he knows that more people means for people to feed but at the same time it also mean that there's more hands that can work, probably the only worry that he could has is how make rival village work together and not create so many conflicts but that is something that will unfold along the way. This episode brings tension since the beginning and that is good because let you know that real conflict still appearing, Maggie feels that her plan is working using the torch of the Statue of Liberty to call the attention of survivors just hope it doesn't backfire her.

The Hospital Puts Maggie's Decision Under Pressure

The chaos in the hospital make Maggie witness how accepting both groups puts Manhattan's limited resources under real pressure, something that was expected by everyone, the morphine is almost gone so she asked Dillard to bring alcohol from the bar but Negan refuses, he stated that he is not going to waste their resources in a group of people that after being help decided to take Manhattan as their own, he is not only skeptical but he also wont help this people yet, but despite his refusal Dillard follow Maggie's order and brought a bottle of whisky. I will do the same if I was Negan, I know that they must help in any way possible to others but here we are talking about survival, any resource is limited and necessary, but Maggie has a big heart after basically two seasons of hate and growth, seems that she had enough and is back to try to live once again. Apparently the people from Newark is not happy because their leader Claudia decided that Maggie is letting her people die and for that reason she took a hostage, she holds a knife to his throat and threatens to kill him if his people are not attended to, really man you are in unknown land and they are helping everyone and that's what Maggie told her, inside the hospital rival groups doesn't exist only people that needs to be saved. This actuall makes me a bit mad but at the same time it was expected, this people I think are more scared than anything else, that kind of behaviour and that give extra points to Negan in not waste their supplies with that people, he is so right. On the other hand the highlight of this season has been Hershel, he doesn't acted anymore as a teenager, he still is, but the circumstances has forced him to grow faster and as a leader and he proved himself when he assist a difficult procedure, he nailed perfectly and is so touching when Maggie look at his son and remember her father, they both would be very proud of Hershel, the way they always try to help people, that moment was priceless, Hershel has grown in a nasty world, with a great mother and now he is proving his value. The nasty shit begins when the light begins to flicker, in that moment people are starting to convert and the true chaos unfolds when the infected start attacking, this is classic TWD series but with this last three spin off we are past that point, its more about peoples expirience and adventures, the living are way more dangerous than the death. At the Hospital everybody is fighting to avoid being bitten while some of the injured where easy pray and end up death but at least the workers pull it together and got the situation under control.

Negan Tries His Own Solution

In Emigrants Negan is an important key even though he is not the one making the decisions, Maggie and Renata are, he does give his opinion and makes his position very clear about all this new people that arrived at the island, he is unhappy and he show it right after Claudia attacked, he decided to take both leaders and teach them a lesson. Negan took Claudia and Bauer and pulled them away from the hospital and puts Dillard in the middle of his little pinata game with Lucille and tries to scare one of them into backing down. Its not like Negan is back to be a bad mf but its like on Season 1 when he show Maggie how to perform, sometimes I get to think its Lucille actually talking through him. He pretend is going to kill both of them if neither back down but that didn't happen, Negan just wanted to scare them so that one of them would choose to leave but that also didn't happen, neither of them back down, in that moment Negan thought the only way to deal with this is by let both group destroy themselves, they are rival and probably that is what would happen. At the end Negan is trying to deal with the situation the best he could but its better not to provoke him, he is just trying to avoid a lot of blood on the floor. Its like what hapen towards the end of the episode when Negan shows that he really care about Dillard, instead of leaving him alone, he take Dillard to the bar and show him that there are real people to share with, that he needs to connect again with real people and that he needs them around.

Renata Forces the Two Groups to Choose

Emigrants probably for many people took to long to solve its main problem, what to do with the Belleville and Newark groups?. Negan has a solid argument, just let them destroy each other, because no one is innocent, he wanted all dead, Maggie stated as they used to be rival, they found common goals to work together they should do the same with those groups as well, following that idea Renata reunite both groups at Central Park since its the one place where they going to grow crops, and offer them two options, one to use the scythe to kill each other or two used it to stay and help build the community, clear land for farming and drop their grudge. I wouldnt blame any of the two groups since I can only imagine you would need to have a very high IQ before the world went to shit so you dont fall with it, because they arrive to a place that look safe and that you can live a little bit more peacefully, will be stupid refused that deal, this was a last resource thing for Renata, but both group decided to end their rivalry and stay for the good of the island and themselves. On the other hand the leaders Bauer neither Claudia were happy, they know that they are loosing the control of their people and probably they are going to play mind games to each of them at the end take the control of the island, they are so wrong, apparently they forgot what Negan did to them, but its just what I think will eventually happen one way or another, or probably they decided to work together, is a possibility. At the end they must be grateful that all their people still alive, that the injures were treated and that now they a have a place to call home.

Hershel Keeps Growing While the Island Gets More Complicated

As I said before Emigrants is a good name for this episode, but Hershel is still what makes the episode greater for me while Maggie and Renata deal with all the people that arrived to Manhattan, people that at the end decided to leave behind their differences to work together, it doesn't mean that there's no other things that must be taking care of, the hospital is at full capacity right now, with no morphine, so if another emergency surge things can get complicated. They also found the reason for the light fluctuation, the guardian that look for the tanks generators was having problems with a walker, Negan stepped in to help him but nearly ended up getting bitten but Dillard save him, this scene shows even though Dillard at the beginning refuse to kill walker he didn't hesitate to kill one if keeping Negan safe depended on that, Negan is more than a friend is family to him, although Negan is a character that cant have friends and family, they all end up dying or betraying him. The episode just get greater with Hershel, the way he react to help people in needed, even putting his own life at risk, he didn't thought about the consequences but at the same time thats good because it makes him feel human and natural again, not with the never ending hate to the world, Negan and Maggie anymore. At the end Maggie gave him the pocket watch that had belonged to both his father and his grandfather, it was just fair, right know Hershel must carry with proud his name. Even though all good events mention Hershel specifically, Maggie and Renata still need to be alert with the newcomers, new people is more hands working but also resentful leaders are a problem. Negan just appear in the right moments with the right arguments and logic, he is thinking in their own good in special Dillard. Now I have to wait not if but for, everything to going backfire in the island in good old The Walking Dead fashion, was a great episode to be honest, not the best TWD spin off but this is turning as good as Season 1.

I liked the Maggie and Negan dynamic here. They are both carrying so much baggage so watching them work together was pretty interesting.
