I Can Thank the Cup — Shavon Bonnie Legion ft. Makis Gibs
Another world born from an improvisation.
This original song was created over Makis Gibs’ electric guitar improvisation, “A Teacup, Two Windows, and an Open Road.” As I listened to his guitar and stepped into the story surrounding the improv, another story began forming in my own head — and I Can Thank the Cup emerged.
For this one, I wanted to step somewhere different.
A rain-soaked street. A hidden 1920s speakeasy. A man standing outside the door before finally walking in. A woman with a painted face singing beneath the low lights. Two people occupying the same room, carrying things neither one quite says.
There is something sensual about this song, but underneath that sensuality I hear longing, memory, distance, and those strange little objects that somehow become witnesses to entire chapters of our lives. Sometimes it is the smallest thing — a room, a window, a road, a cup left sitting on a table — that remembers everything.
I wrote and recorded the lyrics and vocals directly to Makis’ improvisation, and Makis was kind enough to send me the individual guitar stems so I could really get inside the piece and build the final mix. Brian Grass also helped me tremendously with that final mix, helping bring everything together and giving the track the depth and balance I was searching for.

And thank you, Makis, for continuing to create these incredible musical landscapes. There is something very freeing about stepping into these improvised worlds. They allow me to become different characters, explore different emotions and follow wherever the music wants to take me.
Apparently there are quite a few personalities living inside this head of mine. 😂
