Sophia is dedicated to the child I once was, and to every human being who experienced trauma, fear or abuse in childhood and grew into an adult still trying to understand the ways it shaped them. This song is about the child who learned to read the room before she learned to understand herself. The child who became quiet to keep the peace. Who learned to feel danger before it arrived. Who carried the emotions of everyone around her and eventually confused that responsibility with love. And it is about the adult who finally turns around and finds that child again. I am Sophia. Sophia represents wisdom, but for me she is not wisdom untouched by darkness. She is the wisdom that comes from having walked through it. She can see through the veil because she has lived on both sides of it. She still feels deeply, but she no longer believes that feeling another person's pain means she must carry it for them.
Musically, Sophia began with rhythm. I created an original drum beat first, then wrote the song and lyrics around that pulse and recorded the original vocal which took a great deal of emotion out of me and after a few mini panic attacks trying to embody sophia I finally got it and it felt good.
Then Makis Gibs built an extraordinary guitar world around it and Brian Grass came in to lay a solid bass line in and worked up the final mix just stunningly.
There are eight different guitars featured across this recording, each bringing its own history, character and voice. Among them are prototype Vibejoin 12-string and 6-string guitars that Makis helped design; his first electric guitar, a limited Gibson Nighthawk Custom—the instrument that helped inspire the name Gibs; a Suzuki Les Paul-style guitar; his heavily modified "chameleon" guitar; a custom scalloped-neck guitar; a Cort Strat-style instrument that he personally carved and burned into his unique live-performance guitar.
Some of these instruments have been designed, rebuilt, modified, scarred and maintained by Makis himself. They aren't simply eight guitar sounds layered onto a recording. They are eight individual voices, each carrying part of his own history into the song.
The film for Sophia carries another history.
The little girl you see in the green dress and cowboy hat comes from real photographs of me at three years old. I chose her to represent the very young, open and happy part of myself, the child who existed before she understood what fear could become. Later, using those memories as a foundation, I used AI-assisted filmmaking to recreate fragments of a traumatic childhood experience from when I was eight years old: my three-year-old brother, my mother and me fleeing a man who had repeatedly threatened our lives. These scenes are not included for shock. They are there because Sophia is about what happens after the child survives.
Throughout those memories, Makis and his guitars move through the film almost like another language. Halfway through, the adult version of me finally appears, my face divided and painted in different colors. For me, she represents all the pieces: the child and the woman, fear and wisdom, darkness and light, fragmentation and integration. The woman does not erase the little girl. She remembers her. She sees her. And eventually she understands that surviving does not have to mean spending the rest of your life surviving.
For anyone who learned too young to keep everyone else safe, to disappear to keep the peace, to mistake hypervigilance for love, or to carry wounds that were never yours to carry: You are allowed to put them down. This one is for you.
