This is a German film released in 2025, classified as a drama and historical film. Its title, when translated, means “A Storm Is Coming.” The story takes place between 1918 and 1933, following World War I, during a time when there was still a great deal of fear surrounding the expression of opinions, as well as widespread abuse of power by those with connections to the government.
It focuses on life in the countryside, the values of the locals, and how fascism and National Socialism destroyed the foundations of a peaceful, hardworking society.

It begins with a funeral and the usual grief of the family; a boy lets go of his mother’s hand and runs to take the hand of an elderly man; at first I thought he was his grandfather, but he was actually his neighbor. This man is the film’s protagonist, a solitary shoemaker who had a son who fled to the United States when the war began and of whom he knows nothing; this detail is important because it adds an unexpected twist at the end of the film.
Julius Kraus, the shoemaker, is apolitical and gets along well with the community. His life becomes complicated when he tries to help one of his neighbors and his Jewish heritage is discovered; as the town becomes divided, old friendships are broken, and enemies and betrayals begin to emerge.
Julius Kraus, quiet and noble, received help from his neighbor with household chores, and she also brought him milk from her cows. The affection was mutual between the two families. The woman was the boy’s mother and lived with his father; she had a brother who was a fascist soldier and was only interested in the money from his father’s farm, which he sold without her permission.
Silvan Heingeiger was the soldier who arrived at his father’s farm—authoritarian and devoid of any love for his family. He wanted to inherit his father’s estate, but his father was still alive, and his sister and son were also entitled to a share, which thwarted his plans. One day he devised a macabre plan to harm his sister: he paid a friend to rape her and then pretended to want to help her. From that point on, his sister fell into a depression that led her to commit suicide; this man did horrible things that I cannot describe.
All of this soldier’s actions ended up affecting the shoemaker, who was very fond of the soldier’s family. Suddenly, the soldier became obsessed with the shoemaker and made his life a living hell; just when the man was exhausted and at the end of his rope, he received an inheritance from his son and became a millionaire, but he wanted nothing—only to live in peace. This brought him more problems than benefits.
This movie has a very sad ending; it’s like the culmination of so much suffering, anguish, and pain. There’s just a little bit of joy that offers the viewer a moment of respite. The plot, though difficult and harsh, is very compelling because it doesn’t sugarcoat historical reality.
I loved the atmosphere; the town and the costumes immersed me in that era; even though it’s a new production, you wouldn’t know it when watching it, since they paid such close attention to every detail.
The performances are excellent, both by the lead, Josef Hader, who played the shoemaker, and by the antagonist, Frederic Linkemann, the villainous Silvan Heingeiger, whom you end up hating throughout the entire movie.
If you like movies based on real events, historical films, and ones where the drama is more intense than fiction, I highly recommend it.
