SINOPSIS/Synopsis.
Stanley Ipkiss es un tímido, ingenuo y deprimido empleado de banco que constantemente es pisoteado por los demás. Su vida cambia radicalmente cuando encuentra en el río una misteriosa máscara de madera antigua. Al ponérsela, Stanley descubre que la máscara alberga el espíritu del dios nórdico del engaño, Loki, transformándolo en un hiperactivo e indestructible personaje de rostro verde con habilidades de dibujo animado. Bajo esta nueva identidad, Stanley busca conquistar a la hermosa cantante Tina Carlyle, pero sus alocadas travesuras despiertan la ira de Dorian Tyrell, un peligroso mafioso que planea apoderarse del artefacto para controlar la ciudad.
Stanley Ipkiss is a shy, naive, and depressed bank clerk who is constantly walked all over by others. His life changes dramatically when he finds a mysterious, ancient wooden mask in the river. When he puts it on, Stanley discovers that the mask houses the spirit of Loki, the Norse god of mischief, transforming him into a hyperactive, indestructible, green-faced character with cartoon-like abilities. La Máscara es una vibrante adaptación del cómic homónimo de Dark Horse, aunque con un tono mucho más ligero y enfocado en la comedia. La cinta destaca por trasladar con maestría el lenguaje de los dibujos animados clásicos (como Tex Avery o Looney Tunes) al cine de imagen real, logrando un espectáculo visual frenético impulsado por un despliegue de efectos especiales que marcaron época.

OPINIÒN PERSONAL/Personal Opinion.
Es una película sencillamente desternillante y llena de energía. El trabajo de Jim Carrey es un auténtico tour de force de gesticulación, elasticidad y carisma que pocos actores en la historia habrían podido ejecutar con tanta precisión. La química en pantalla, el inolvidable vestuario amarillo, la pegajosa banda sonora a ritmo de swing y mambo, y el debut deslumbrante de Cameron Diaz hacen que la película sea un disfrute absoluto de principio a fin.
It’s a film that’s simply side-splitting and full of energy. Jim Carrey’s performance is a true tour de force of physical comedy, flexibility, and charisma that few actors in history could have pulled off with such precision. The on-screen chemistry, the unforgettable yellow costume, the catchy soundtrack featuring swing and mambo rhythms, and Cameron Diaz’s dazzling debut make the film an absolute delight from start to finish.
CRITICA/Review.
A pesar de su gran éxito y efectividad cómica, la trama en sí es bastante sencilla y predecible, siguiendo la fórmula habitual de la lucha entre el héroe improvisado y el villano de turno. Además, al suavizar el tono oscuro y violento del cómic original para enfocarlo a un público familiar, la historia pierde cierta profundidad dramática. Sin embargo, estos detalles pasan a segundo plano gracias al ritmo vertiginoso que maneja la dirección y al talento arrollador de su protagonista.
Despite its great success and comedic effectiveness, the plot itself is quite simple and predictable, following the usual formula of the struggle between the reluctant hero and the villain of the moment. Furthermore, by toning down the dark and violent tone of the original comic to appeal to a family audience, the story loses some of its dramatic depth. However, these details take a back seat thanks to the director’s breakneck pace and the overwhelming talent of its lead actor.
CONCLUSIÒN/Conclusion.
La Máscara es un hito de la comedia noventera que se mantiene tan fresca y divertida como el día de su estreno. Su combinación de efectos visuales pioneros, música pegajosa y una actuación protagónica irrepetible la convierten en un referente imprescindible del cine de entretenimiento pop.
