Hello to everyone in this community! I feel like the week has flown by; the weekend is almost here, and I still have some preparations to finish for an event where I’ll be running a sales booth. I had thought about waiting until tomorrow to enter the contest, but I’d rather do it now so I’m aware of what I can get done during my downtime and can decide what to do tomorrow 😇
✨ What does true rest (downtime) look like for you? How do you give yourself more of it without feeling guilty ✨
Well, the truth is, I’m probably the last person who should be talking about rest, since I’m the type of person who’s always looking for something to do. I can’t help it; even when I have "free" time, I always manage to find other things to do. That’s why I sometimes have to force myself to focus on the task at hand—even when I’m supposed to be resting. It’s frustrating, and I know I need to work on it; I admit I often struggle to switch out of "productive mode." It gets to the point where I have trouble falling asleep, or if I wake up in the middle of the night for some reason, my brain immediately starts thinking about what we could do once I get up... Honestly, it’s exhausting.
But when I do manage to break through that barrier of constant productivity, I discover that I can actually relax. That’s why I like heading to the countryside for a few days to clear my head and force myself to rest. So, here’s what makes me realize I’m truly taking a few days off:
Real sleep. I admit I don’t sleep very well in the city. How do I know? Well, that happens when I don’t dream at all and keep waking up throughout the night. So, for me, true rest means calming my mind enough to drift into a deep sleep—allowing me not just to dream, but to sleep straight through the night and wake up the next morning feeling completely rested. That’s why catching up on sleep is my top priority during my days off. I’d love to say a nap would be ideal, but I haven’t been able to sleep during the day for years. I really envy people who can fall asleep in the middle of the day (and cats, too—oh, how I envy them! Hahaha).

Watching movies or series. This is something that requires a nuanced approach. Some people enjoy binge-watching movies and series in their spare time. I can’t do that—or rather, I simply don’t like to. I feel my mind needs time to process and appreciate what I’ve just watched. I’m the type of person who, after finishing a movie, craves a moment of introspection—especially if the plot really captivated me. The same goes for series with many episodes; watching so many back-to-back tends to leave me mentally drained rather than helping me unwind. So, in my free time, I always like to pick a "comfort" movie or series. It doesn't matter if I’ve seen it a thousand times; I know that watching that specific title helps regulate my emotions. For example, one of my comfort movies I consider to be Wish by Disney and it's kind of funny, since it's a very hated and criticized movie, but I don't know why it fascinates me, I really like watching it and, above all, listen to its songs. When I feel very tired or depressed, I can watch this movie, and I magically start to feel better.
Going for a walk. Many people wouldn't even consider leaving the house during their downtime, but I love the idea of going for a walk and strolling to my favorite spots. Even if it’s just to look around, I feel that visiting my favorite places gradually melts away any mental or emotional fatigue I might be feeling. Of course, physical tiredness is real, but when I’m feeling good emotionally, it’s easier to handle—haha.
Drawing and coloring. I also find it relaxing to draw or color anything. Instead of getting stuck in a state of exhaustion, my mind begins to shake it off with every stroke. To keep the activity enjoyable, I make sure to draw only what I want, without pressure and certainly without striving for perfection. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch a drawing take shape little by little as you let yourself get into the flow. The same goes for the coloring books that have become so popular lately. You can color a picture however you like, and there’s no need to show it to anyone; as long as you see it and like how it turned out, that’s all that matters.

Writing or reading. I know it might sound a bit unusual, but during my downtime and moments of relaxation, I also enjoy writing. Not just anything, though; I prefer writing stories—usually featuring fictional characters. I like crafting scenarios where these characters experience adventures, romances, and drama. Best of all, I can do this collaboratively with other people who share the same hobby.
Playing video games. This is something I’ve somewhat set aside lately, but it still helps me unwind, as I generally play games that are quite calm and peaceful. I love games that call "Cozy", in which you can do simple and relaxing activities such as watering plants, serving coffee, cooking and even fishing, all with calm music in the background. It becomes quite addictive, especially with games based on everyday life. I try not to focus on scores or perfecting the activities; I simply enjoy what I’m doing, regardless of whether I’m playing the same level over and over again.
As you’ve read, most of the time, in order to truly appreciate or enjoy my downtime or rest, I absolutely need to be doing something; I know myself, and I’m aware that I’m a bit obsessive about productivity. Because of that, I try not to be too hard on myself; instead of forcing myself to do nothing for hours, I try to allow myself to engage in simple activities that I know will ultimately help me relax. I believe we don’t all relax in the same way, and the ideal approach is to know ourselves well enough to find what works best for us. Tomorrow, I’m "supposed" to rest—since I’ll be quite busy this weekend—so I hope to put some of those aforementioned ideas into practice, and I know I won’t feel guilty about it. 😉

Salir a caminar.
