[ENG/ESP] Journey to Gómez: Work, Nature, and Gratitude

The week is off to a great start, with plenty of work and weather that seems to be on our side every day. Before I go on, I want to wish you all a productive and happy day—just as everyone deserves. It’s always good to start the morning with positive thoughts and the energy to believe that everything will turn out well. As this new day begins, we have several tasks ahead of us at a home where we’ve been hired to do some plumbing and masonry work. We usually focus on drinking water, chlorination, and system maintenance, but this request came from a friend of my father’s, and out of respect and affection, we couldn’t turn it down. In future posts, I’ll tell you in more detail how it went, because there’s always something interesting to share about each day’s work. Today I’ll show you the route we took, which, as usual, began very early—almost as soon as the birds started singing. We had to travel to the municipality of Gómez, which is quite a distance away, to perform the chlorination and activate the filters at the desalination plant at the Sunsol Ecoland Hotel. As I’ve told you before, the weather was wonderful—hot, radiant, with that strong sun that characterizes the island. Although it can be exhausting at times, it also gives me the opportunity to capture beautiful views along the way, especially when we drive up the Portachuelo road. Every bend in the road looks like a painting created by nature.

As we approached the hotel, we passed by the lagoon, which always offers us its most beautiful view. I never tire of looking at it; it's like a small natural sanctuary that changes with the light of day.

We arrived at the hotel, where, as always, we were warmly welcomed. We already feel like part of the big Sunsol hotel family, because every week we share responsibilities and good times with them.

We climbed up to the main tank to perform the routine chlorination. From that vantage point, you can see landscapes that not everyone gets to see—enchanting views that look like they’re straight out of a postcard. I couldn’t help but take a few photos, because the beauty from up there is truly special.

Then we went downstairs to activate the filter at the desalination plant, which we’ve been working on week after week. This is the most time-consuming task, because it involves rinsing the filter media until the water runs completely clear, and then activating the system to connect it in series with the filter we activated last week. It’s a meticulous process that requires concentration to ensure the pressures are exactly as they should be.

Later that afternoon, after finishing our work, we took a walk around the hotel’s lagoon. It’s like stepping into a small natural paradise where all you can hear is the sound of the water and the songs of various birds. On this occasion, a white heron approached us, and I was able to take several photos of it. A very still iguana also stayed by our side, as if it wanted to keep us company; it was a funny and heartwarming moment. All these animals feel safe in the lagoon, just like the fish, which grow to be quite large. Sitting near this spot is deeply relaxing and a beautiful way to end a day of hard work.
