Garage Banned

Well, what feels like finally, the floor of the garage has all been painted at least once. It is a bit frustrating as it has to be done in parts, and cleaning has to be done between, so what has been painted (but hopefully dry) has a fine layer of dust on it that will require cleaning again - but it is okay.

That was the last of the first can of paint I used, The floor had already been sealed.

The worst part by far is having to constantly move things from one place to another, with piles of firewood, or building materials, machines and odds and ends all being moved multiple times. *Some can stay outside, but most cannot. I was able to finally get my wife to sort through some stuff last night for charity - I have been asking for over a week now. That cleared a bit of it out.

And last night I put in some effort and primed most of the floor so I could paint today. The problem was I also used some old concrete I found to repair the worst bit of the floor, but it hadn't dried yet. I have never concreted before and have no idea if it will stay how I did it, but it might, or might not.

But as you can see from the following shots, the concrete is in terrible condition otherwise and I am trying to ignore it, as I know this is the basement and it should still suit the needs of what we need right now and in the near-ish future. Ultimately, because there is no insulation under the foundation of this house, we are going to have to dig out all the concrete, put in insulation, relay with floor heating, and then refit everything. That would run to around 120,000€ by estimates. So, it is a "while away".

Plus, we have to get the roof done first, which is about 50,000€.

Since this is not a living area and we don't actually park the car in here, the goal is to make it usable without traipsing dust all the way through everywhere. Up until this point, it has been a shoes only zone and as a result, it gets dirty very quickly. Plus, no care is taken. Once the floors are all dry and things are put away in their places, in the main section where we have the laundry, sauna and other areas, we will put down outdoor matting that will keep it a little warmer, but also make it shoeless.

And dropping wet laundry won't result in a rewash.

Tomorrow, Smallsteps' Finnish family are coming here to belatedly celebrate her birthday and my wife wants all the stuff out of the driveway so that it looks better. I am not sure that is going to happen, since the floors might not be dry in time, so she is going to have to suffer the humiliation of things not being in place. But since she hasn't done any of the work, she shouldn't complain too much.

That probably won't stop her.

    I was able to finally get my wife to sort through some stuff last night for charity - I have been asking for over a week now.

    If it's any consolation J has been waiting years. I have managed to sort and clear out a lot of stuff but due to the layout of the house I can't just hide away in a corner and do it, anywhere is going to be in someone's way and then there's endless whining and nagging because I refuse to just throw the whole lot out (my father in law did that once thinking he was helping and that nothing would be missed because "no one was using it" and wondered why I got really mad when I couldn't find anything that I was still using even if the usage was intermittent, but he never did that again) so they will likely continue to wait years.

    But this is what happens when they both want you to freaking hurry up on the stuff that only you could do but refuse to do the stuff anyone could do but don't want to either :)

    Looks like you did well. I know what you mean about moving stuff around. My wife and I have been thinking about doing our floors and I know it is going to be a pain moving things from one room to another.

    ‎That garage is really taking a lot of work. I can imagine how tiring it must be to keep moving things around just to paint the floor. But at least you are getting there little by little, and I think it will feel really good when everything is finally in place.

    I wish you speedy actualization with the garage repair work (especially with the birthday in view). We like celebrations in my place. In fact, major house renovations are usually done when there is one kind of ceremony approaching. Let the birthday celebration be a memorable one

    For concrete repair you need special compounds for it to last. Also paint on the garage floor if you drive over it is not going to last... I think that you are better of with going with good old epoxy floors or with tiles like I did in our garage eight years ago...

    And 50k of Euro for a roof is insane unless you are going for a fancy metal tiles on a 600+ Square meter mansion 😀

    Where is the dust coming from? Might be useful to try to plug any gaps around the garage door? Not easy but might cut the dust down.

    I would like to change our roof as well. But that would be more so because I want to and not because I need to. And I don't see a insane amount of money making a hole in my wallet/pocket any time soon. I suppose I could win a lottery...But that would require buying a lottery ticket. And I am more likely to buy sweets or Hive instead.

    Yeah, it's really frustrating but in all, you have done your best. I also got my most frustrating part of my do it yourself projects. To me, the most frustrating part is definitely the moving of things many times.

    It's fine. But I was thinking that the floor can be worked on to make it smooth before the painting.

    But you've done your best and your wife will have to understand with you.

    Looking good. Wish my garage was looking that good. Getting there though. Except I won't be painting the floor :). Today may be the final push or close to it for mine. YOungest is coming over this afternoon to help me. Should get a lot done with the extra hands and youthfulness.
