Help Fix Steem's Economy!

Help Me Fix Steem's Economy!

While most people would agree that something is wrong on this platform, many can't quite pinpoint exactly what the problem is. This is known as the Steve Buscemi's face effect.

steve.png Me starting off with that joke basically means we're stuck with this as the thumbnail

Lately, I keep hearing a lot of complaints like:

  • People are far too greedy on Steemit
  • We have a problem of bad culture and need to educate people to behave better
  • Keep your hands to yourself you creep or I'll call the police
  • How the fuck can people just get away with self voting 10 times a day?

These are all misdiagnoses of the underlying economic problem which I've written directly below in bold so lazy shits can just read that and go straight to the comments.

Problem: Under our current economy of linear and 25% curation, it is roughly 4x more financially rewarding to participate in content indifferent voting behavior (eg. self voting, vote selling) than content reflective voting behavior (eg. curation). This has lead to a complete failure in our ability to function as a content discovery and rewards platform.

Now because it takes painstaking hard work and extraordinary talent to create high quality content such as this piece you're reading, many large stakeholders have opted to sell their votes to garbage ads or self vote their own rubbish. Supporting actual good content will, on average, cost you 75% of your returns in lost opportunity, and fighting against the rubbish on here will only set you back a mere 100% of returns. Thus, it becomes too expensive for many of us to not take part in the very activity that, collectively, is destroying this platform.

Imagine you had a community that introduced a new law which rewarded a person $1000 every time they take a shit in public. Would it be surprising to discover, after a while, that the streets were flowing in diarrhea? Would you try to rectify this situation by asking people to be less greedy? Or perhaps try to educate people to shift from a culture of shitting on the streets to one of, well, not shitting on the streets? Would there be a point in asking how the fuck do you even manage to shit 10 times a day?

Of course not. You'd change the law that rewarded shitting in public so highly. Similarly, don't be surprised if people engage in the exact activity we've decided to reward the most: vote farming (be it vote selling or self voting). Now, our approach to rectify this should be clear:

Mission: We need to devise and implement a new economic system that rewards the behavior we want with the most competitive returns while sacrificing the least in terms of trade offs.

You get the behavior you reward the most on here. The idea is to close the gap between content indifferent and content reflective rewards by incentivizing the former less and the latter more in terms of returns. @kevinwong and I prefer using a combination of measures (slight superlineararity, higher curation 50% and 10% separate downvotes) modestly, which together, should be strong enough to give good curation a competitive edge over mindless vote selling and self voting. Of course other measures are perhaps available, and they all have their trade offs. Some are really fucking bad ideas, and I might write about them another day.

It is quite frustrating to see the overall lack of clarity and urgency in terms of efforts being directed to fixing this problem that's completely undermining our platform over the past year. Focusing on UI or communities as a solution is like getting diagnosed with testicular cancer and deciding that the best way to treat it is by getting a nose job and your anus bleached.

The good news is that the failure of this system is entirely fixable; it isn't at all something inherent to decentralization or stake based voting, nor is it some moral or cultural problem. We can change the economics here to incentivize the behavior we want instead of swimming through our diarrhea filled streets.

If you believe something should be done to better align rewards with desirable behavior, please let witnesses and Steemit Inc know about it. Do it in person if you're attending Steemfest 3. Kevin will be there and he'll give you a private lap dance if you help us fix the economy.

Wow... So there are people that truly care about this platform... Are the other whales just so big that change is hard to put into works? It is crazy to me that 1 downvote can literally neutralize countless hours of work. Making it hard for people to speak out against such things.

I think with this idea of shitposting, it would be best to incorporate like somewhat of a bell curve in terms of rewards like if you upvote the same person the 2nd time within the week or month you upvote him will have lesser effects. Therefore it spreads out the curation trails a bit allowing for a ton more people to be able to be discovered and reinforced for being here.

If things keep going down this trend where a large share is grouped or cliqued off, I think it hinders the massive explosion this platforms needs. Not only that but the overall currency will be devalued. The best way to hold value is to have a bigger base and foundation. !PIZZA

Maybe because this post is so old you won't read it, but I'll leave this here in case you find it as I don't feel tagging is appropriate here.

I hear you. I resulted to using bots because it felt like posts would just not get enough visibility for the content to even be judged by people, weather good or not. Maybe besides the feed there should be another category with ''recommended'' posts, giving another avenue for posts with low steem power to get a chance to be seen and judged by people interested in the subjects.

@trafalgar I believe I have a more simple idea, just make it where each vote is different meaning right now we get 10 upvotes a day, we need to make it where when you self vote that one vote counts as two votes and then when you vote on other people's post that just counts a 1 vote, now there is an incentive to curate post

Good, I totally agree with the partner, what can be done better is to try to generate better content so that the people who use the sale of votes and all those things or just to extend some popularity are not doing what is really the purpose, although I am new on the platform I think the purpose is to reach each and every one of the people with totally interesting topics and above all to ignore less and for each one of your thoughts knowledge and culture that you impart has a reward what happens is that today we are in a world which selfishness, evil and just think of us reaches many people (not to see beyond themselves), and that leads to a bad culture formation and not trying to improve and all because of lack of communication and that has led to wars just because they always want to have control of things when at the other end of the world people die of hunger, thirst, disease and Many things, I come with this will say that this is what the partner speaks but it is not a different vision to the development of the system but we have to campaign or a system to end the bad content that people can do but always they will exist but it will always be a part that should not be taken into account because they will leave the platform alone even if they have income because they will always look for the easy way of things and that is what always leads them to failure, all those things what they do to damage the platform due to its bad training. Sharing your achievements and knowledge is the fundamental basis of the platform for people to change the way they see the world. A pleasure to share a bit of this writing very good evening attentively @miguelcubas

This one paragraph basically made my entire day and maybe my week lol.

    Epic LOL

Would it be surprising to discover, after a while, that the streets were flowing in diarrhea? Would you try to rectify this situation by asking people to be less greedy? Good read thought and you have some good question points. Good food for thought.

  • @sreleyas(39)· 2855d

It is certainly true. Hopefully there will be something soon. I know an information that is very amazing

  • @annemariemay(66)· 2855d

I agree with all of this... The content that is supported day in and day out just isn't very good. I first came to Steemit because I heard about this amazing platform that promotes incredible content by individuals that are passionate and educated... unfortunately that isn't the case at all... There are so many accounts and posts that are promoted on the hot and trending page that honestly shouldn't be there.

New users will see this platform, look at those posts and think "wow... this is horse shit..."

I just hope that moving forward more people will the large amount of Steem power use their influence to promote the content worth promoting. The content that will actually attract people to this platform. Those with thousands of SP can make a huge difference by encouraging content creators to continue to create original meaningful content.

Accounts like tribesteemup and doing this and they have a great community behind them. I hope more people that have a ton of influence start to do the same before it is too late...

And I actually didn't know I was hurting the Steemit economy by selling my votes, I am not new to the platform but I still have a lot to learn. Honestly I turned to selling my votes because I just couldn't find enough posts worth up-voting...

I think this deserves all the up-votes it has gotten and in my opinion it deserves twice what it has now. Awesome post!

I can't believe I have not found your page until now, @trafalgar you have a new follower!

  • @ketopian(50)· 2855d

I always upvote my own content, and I’m not greedy as I upvote other at a similar rate. I put hours publishing work just to be paid pennies while a whale claims hundreds for a sourced photo of a loaded pipe.

Maybe what we are seeing is a reflection of who we are as a society, and these depressing problems are a symptom of a desperate and sick global culture that can’t be fixed with an algorithm.

We have dumb celebrities and narcissists with power and influence, while hard working honest people scrambling to survive now and for thousands of years. At least steemit offers us a way to have financial autonomy after a period of daily effort, patience, and focus. what’s wrong with that?

I had some suggestions here on how to fix the economy, would love to read your feedback.

Current problems with steemit are like a huge turd that is slowly circling the drain, and threatens to clog up the entire system, ruining this online toilet for everyone.

Glad to see you guys are not letting this issue go away and are bringing it to Steemfest with you, that's what we need.

For those who don't know yet, I've been working on a UI level solution to this problem myself as I saw the issue and how no one wanted to fix it.

So if you want to support organic content discovery you could always check out https://steemliber.com/ - you should now be able to vote on posts and comments + comment on posts. There's lot to be done still but it's already in a working state for those who lurk and just want to support normal steemians who don't want to use their money to gain a spotlight on them.

Of course fixing the underlying incentives is what I'd want to see happen most, this is just temporary minor band aid that I saw myself needing also as a curator and investor in Steem ecosystem.

Your post just happens to be at the #1 trending spot there btw :)

  • @donkeypong(76)· 2856d

Your efforts are really important and I appreciate the ongoing discussion about improving the economics here. As you know, I have mixed feelings about these specific proposals, but I'm not at all against them either. If they gain more support, then I'll be glad to give them a try.

Please consider, though, that both SMTs and communities will introduce some new dynamics in terms of potential opportunities and revenue streams that might entice stakeholders to invest in those slightly longer term Steem-based projects. That in turn could change the economic balance again. I know you and Kevin will say that the same underlying problems would remain and you might be right, but the system we have also might work better once people have some more options for using their time and money productively.

  • @tcpolymath(69)· 2856d

Here's my alternative proposal. It allows all users to work in the curation environment they prefer, and over time user behavior will empirically demonstrate where the optimal levels are. Bonus, for all curation percentages 25 and over, it doesn't even require consensus. You can start building it today.

  • @highdoulikememes(50)· 2857d

I think everyone should just post what they want, like what they like and not worry about what anyone else does. My very least kinds of posts on Steemit are the "this is why everyone sucks at Steemit" types of posts.

This place is great... you just need to find the right community of people, I think.

  • @y-o-u-t-h-m-e(68)· 2857d

First of all, Very interesting topic. I'm glad that you raised the voice about this topic.

By the way, I want to share some of my ideas & thoughts about this messed up Steem distribution system nowadays.

    1. Check how few accounts are holding majority of Steem & SP

1‰(per-mil, not percent) of accounts holding over 80% of whole Steem & SP. When it comes to ~1%, then app. 94% of whole Steem&SP. (Surprising? I didn't even say how these Steem were distributed at first.. yet)

At this point, We should accept the reality - Bigger SP makes bigger SP, and Whales has 94% of Steem&SP, simply.

    2. 'Delegation' Thingy appeared.. (feat. Bid-bots)

In my assumption, Whales wanted to save their time and collect more coins Easily & efficiently. Because it would look pretty ugly if Whales upload shit post everyday & upvote each others 10times +@/Day, right? Then Delegation system appeared. And Bid-bot system appeared along together.

By these 2 tools, (Delegation & Bid-bot) 1 - Whales can divide their big chunk of SP into several bid-bot accounts, (so they don't have to do ugly things with their original accounts) 2 - Concentrate minnow's SP into their bid-bot accounts for their bigger profit, (poor minnows would think it's win-win strategy when factually it's merely drinking salt water) 3 - Even Sell their vote to minnows for Paid upvoting. Eg) Some poor minnow who paid 15Steem for 15.0xxSteem might think that it's a good business for him/her, but that is just a hepling bid-bot owner's disguised self voting.

    3. Disguised self voting?

Yes. Because by selling vote & receiving same(or more) value of Steem or SBD from minnow - making this scheme looks 'justified' and 'fair' when it's totally Not.

    4. Bid-bot is Built-up, Macro program.

Even if someone is going to pay you $10,000 for Shitting on the Street or Public, you can not Shit 24/7. But Bid-bots Can. This is the difference.

    5. So what is the Point?

My point is.. By just 'changing reward ratio for curator' wouldn't be too helpful to fix this serious problem.

Steemit needs Radical Change, not a trick eye. (You don't use psuedo for cancer, do you?)

    -> Kill the bid-bots.

That will be when we can start again. It's already pretty much 'end-game' phase (since Steem inflation is below 9.5%/year) now, BUT it might giving minnows little more Hope.

Imagine all these whale bid-bots Stop exploiting reward pool!

1 - Finally we will feel some Trickle-down effect, 2 - Can think about Fair distribution by creating & curating quality contents 3 - No more freakin Monkey Post kind of posts spamming all over the trending section. (Newbies feel really hopeless when this happens - Monkey Post getting $$$)

Time is pretty late here and I have to wake up in 3hrs for work. I wrote this comment just to share my thoughts because it might be helpful to make Steemit change into a better & fair platform for everyone. :)

P.S - I don't mind Whales getting rich. Just saying that bid-bot is quite tricky & automated Steem&SBD juicer for greedy whales. And it won't be helpful for Steemit platform even in the future.

P.S2 - Dear Planktons, Minnows, Dolphines - Hodl your Steem Hard!! (I am also an Steem Hodler) HODL will WIN (unless it's EMC2 or Bitconeeeeeeee) ;)

    Just my 2 satoshis..✌

"streets flowing in diarrhea" ? Man, you are a poet ! But take moment to consider what you wrote:

educate people to shift from a culture of shitting on the streets to one of, well, not shitting on the streets? Yes, indeed ! Educate people ! Scold those who seem to not want to heed ! That is very different from "fining them $1000" ! The latter is about monetary incentives, the former about social incentives. They are complementary but cannot replace one another

Consider my rephrasing your mission, from

Mission: We need to devise and implement a new economic system that rewards the behavior we want with the most competitive returns while sacrificing the least in terms of trade offs.

    to the following:

Mission: We need to devise and implement a new economic and social system that rewards the behavior we want with the most competitive returns while sacrificing the least in terms of trade offs.

The implicit argument: it's very hard (perhaps impossible) to devise a better system while reducing everything to the economic dimension only; while, although complex, we stand a chance of managing to create one by leveraging the basic needs of human people to feel safe, to be loved, to belong to a community, to learn and be admired for what they do and what they know (all of these with a certain link to monetary rewards but not a full 100% hard link)

    You write further down:

Focusing on UI or communities as a solution is like getting diagnosed with testicular cancer and deciding that the best way to treat it is by getting a nose job and your anus bleached.

But frankly this is just your opinion and let a full body of scientific research in social sciences and economics tell you: you are wrong, it actually works. See for instance Mark Granovetter

even in market societies, economic activity is not as disembedded from society as economic models would suggest.

Or Dan Ariely's "Predictably Irrational". Or many other

  • @dj123(61)· 2857d

hey traffy good to see you posting again

so what's the conclusion? is making 10 post a day getting boring or u just missing the $8 price tag?

honestly you proved your point, you have made more self upvoting about 200k Steem in about the same time as posting when you made 100K (and honestly probably the same effort ~ accumulatively)

from what I can see the separate 10% flag pool isn't going to gain much momentum, but then again, many who has been here a long time have seen flag wars or skirmishes reward ego bruising, so i can see the fear factor, not sure about @ned wanting a 100% separate flag reward pool, but yeah I can see that a new culture will come soon if that happens, we can even flag folks for powering down, flag for delegating to bots, flag for not wiping up after shitting in the streets, the flag options are endless

i don't see the harm of doing 50/50....since we have done that before, but in the meantime, big self upvoters like yourself will still benefit the most with alts (and i'm not saying you don't deserve upvoting your 10 post, but as you say, it's at the sinking ship expense that's distributed to all aka all Steem holders get taxed even at 50/50 [unless you start getting flagged....my thoery you will stop at 20% loss easy].......still if you got 200% return more aka 200K Steem vs 100K from exponential rewards i would say that return is still pretty good at Steem at $0.80....considering you're deep in the black)....so honestly i don't see how you would get discouraged to stop self-upvoting

that super linear 1.2-1.3 thingo might not deter bot usage....infact it might pump it higher

so how about this, consider these economic ideas and do a part2 post:

    1. reduce delegated voting power to 80%....see what happens

    2. i'm not in the chat with the other big whales and steemit inc like you are, so why not propose increase curation by 5% every minor hf so it goes from 25% to 50% over say 6-12 months....and we all see what happens?

    3. try limiting your selfupvoting 80% (and see if encouragement works to help retention and user base growth).....aka vote 20% away to worthy content creations to increase and buff up the fundemental value of Steem even in this down market, ...i know you probably already hate (or have negative feelings about) @comedyopenmic and have not supported since your tiff with @idikuci which striked a nerve with you since day 1 of his complain....but i never flagged you, infact i upvoted you 100% multiple times when i was still powered up at 25K during those times......so follow your emotions, don't upvote whatever I say, heck don't make any extra effort .... hell you can set 20% to follow @curie and just cut your post and comment upvote to equivalent 8 a day

i have just read an interesting paper....that proposes btc will rise again to 19-20K only after the next stock market crash..upto 1-2 years in the future ....the theory of a long winter for crypto easily mean we eventually see a $.50 Steem....hell maybe even an extreme dip back to your avg purchase price of $0.20 - .30 (that would really be worst case scenario)

look with 6 new social media crypto on EOS and a dozen others on other crypto....yes most running AND working, in 1+ years, i doubt Steem will still have the incredible lead it had in 2017 when you bought Steem, and I'm almost 90% certain Stem will no longer have a lead in 2 years time

btw. the long winter theory is not w/o basis.....when the dotcom crashed...as you know being a finance guy yourself, it took 3+ years of a down market from 2000 to 2003 before it started rising again (and slowly rising this time).....and even then , it took over another decade to get near that peak again, history does not repeat but it does rhyme......if 3 years in winter is even 1 year for crypto...then a decade back to peak is another 3 years....but with 1 difference >80% of all the stocks back at 2nd peak were not the same 100 top .com stock in 1999.

yup....good to see you posting again, hope i'm wrong and you become a multi-millionaire again

personally what i hear you are saying is this , if 50% curation (linear or slightly super-linear) and 10% or even 100% flag does not work...it only means 1 thing DPOS - delegated proof of stake does not work, the rich getting richer model will not be the boon of crypto mass adoption on social media

  • @amirtheawesome1(72)· 2857d

First of all it’s really good to see you posting long form posts again. And yes I will take full credit for that because I tagged you so much in my posts.

Since we last talked about these things I went on to educate myself further about this. I think there’s a big issue people have in directing their anger like you stated in your example about people shitting in the streets, an example I wish I didn’t read during eating beef stu for lunch, overall I agree with your points. People seem to have that Alexandria Cortes and aiming their hate at the rich without education. When I think of those big communities, OCD, Curie and their fat upvote there’s always that big whale upvote that’s giving it the big weigh it has. I think a rise in communities is needed to appreciate content creators and amplify their work for public while getting whale supporters (perhaps you supporting COM maybe, I don’t know).

Anyway I lost the thread of what I wanted to say 3 words. Just know I agree.

  • @ammonite(73)· 2857d

Firstly let me say I love your writing style. Glad I can laugh while being informed. Many a true word spoken in gest, and all that good stuff.

To your point, I agree that things need to change, so many steemians are shitting where they eat on the platform. If we want it to succeed there needs to be a decision made on its direction. Do we want a pay to play where the resources will soon be burned out or do we want to attract more users with quality content to help create a better platform for all. Your ideas may not be silver bullets but at this point they could be the only weapons we have to stop this place going down the toilet. But good luck in changing a system where many with the power to make that change are benefiting from how the broken system kind of works now.

This is the reason why all my video remain at youtube. make no sense to move all here. Youtube at least promote my video . Here if you have no money , you are doom even if you got good content. Nobody care about good content . some say i did not talk or socialize with people . i like WTF?

I love that this comment section is filled with rich discussion.

  • @programmingvalue(55)· 2857d

Said this before and will say this again, Steem needs to actively investigate different models to improve economy and content quality.

  • @hanshotfirst(80)· 2857d

First of all, long time no chat! I miss your musk.

Second, many people think you are just a clown here to entertain all of us. But I know your secret. You are actually brilliant! For close to a year you have been jumping up and down pointing to the roof that is on fire. You also pointed out exactly why the roof is on fire. But many have said "We don't need no water let the mothertrucker burn. Burn mothertrucker. Burn." (This joke was intended for the very small niche of 1980s House Music enthusiasts).

Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, because I am not Kevin, I think your solution has a flaw.

I completely disagree with the idea that making downvotes easier and cheaper will help in any way. I think that would be disastrous. We have already seen the vast majority of people use their upvotes to maximize personal, immediate profits. What makes anyone believe people will not use downvotes in the same exact way? Do we trust people to use downvotes to help the platform or to help themselves?

Two years of evidence seems to indicate that if people had cheap downvotes at their disposal, they would use them to increase their individual immediate profits. People will not downvote based on post quality, they will downvote based on the immediate impact on their personal rewards.

In addition, it will bring a level of negativity to the platform that most normal people will seek to avoid.

  • @solarwarrior(67)· 2858d

bang on! And I have no idea why anyone buys votes.. it just makes no sense at all... I just wrote a post about this today: https://steemit.com/steemit/@solarwarrior/voting-bots-could-please-someone-explain-to-me-why-this-makes-sense-for-the-vote-buyer

  • @tobixen(63)· 2858d

My suggestion is to reduce the inflation rate.

Think of it, the whales have to upvote their content to keep their steem values to be "stolen" through inflation.

With a lower inflation rate, the best strategy for a whale to grow value will be to promote steem, to raise the value of the token itself.

  • @tobixen(63)· 2858d

I feel very uneasy about the over-linear thing:

    • As of today, some posts easily get $100 despite what I subjectively think is a lack of quality, while posts which I believe have a higher quality content get $1. The difference is the follower list and popularity of the author. With a 1.3 exponential the post that today get $100 will get 400 times the reward of the 1$-post. And that's just the beginning - there is the Keynesian Beauty Contest effect, already with a linear rewards and todays curation rewards it would be lucrative for me to find the authors earning most rewards and throw in an automated upvote some ~13 minutes after post time to those. It can be done totally automatically and without any considerations on the quality of the post. From the reward-point-of-view probably the 5% most popular authors would reap the reward pool, while the 95% regular posters would gain less. (There are luckily initiatives like Curie and SteemSTEM that actually search for and honors quality).
    • Overlinear rewards also gives extra benefits to the whales. I believe a self-vote from a whale today is worth quite much more than the hundred smaller votes a regular poster may get - so when introducing overlinear rewards, those self-votes will be worth even more.
    • Overlinear rewards gives a great bonus to the biggest bidbot services. They will give fewer upvotes (only one every second hour), but will get far bigger payments for those upvotes.
  • @steemmatt(71)· 2858d

Are the right intentions for fixing Steemit behind these ideas? You're very smart with economics, and a great writer, but you've mainly applied these talents to your 3-pronged voting ring. Something doesn't add up. I ran the numbers in 9 directions, and the staggering amount of dollars exchanged amongst your accounts (enough to qualify a new whale) makes it difficult to understand your intentions here.

Priorities on the system and economics are great, and I support that, but if they're also weighted in with caring about the community and social impact. This leadership behavior decays the quality of Steemit. If big money does it without resistance, then others feel it's fine to do so, and said shit storm ensues. Blaming the system can only go so far. We’re responsible for each and every action we choose to take.

If your proposed changes are adopted, how your your behavior change?

We all want Steemit and Steem to succeed. Thanks for your time.

  • @theabsolute(65)· 2858d

Perhaps a little off topic, but the public sewer system really never gets the appreciation it deserves. No longer having a shit bucket that is dumped outside on the streets everyday is nice for everyone. I don't know what the solution is, but I know that @trafalgar has brought up a perspective that I align to more than just saying everyone should just behave better.

  • @lordbutterfly(80)· 2858d

No we dont. The proposal you guys are making is a really bad idea. Its bad from so many points of view that its hard to even start to point out the least bad effect this would cause. There is only 1 fix to this. And that fix includes banning certain behavior. That will never happen.

I dont know if youre making this proposal with good intentions in mind but everything points to you guys using your position as whales to increase your ROI. Youre using your position you gained by throwing around a few $ through curating to push a profit maximization change for yourself. I mean just look at the positive comments from the people that would be most screwed by this. This is a tragically bad idea that would change absolutely nothing for the better except increase the current curators profit. You dont want to adjust to the system. You want the system to adjust to you. Its even more tragically bad since in principle its just "trickle down" in disguise.... You had dtube move towards 50% curation few months ago and it changed almost nothing in curator behavior. You still had dtube and Kpine supporting most of the quality content creators.

What youre essentially doing is cutting everyone else earning potential, wrecking bots, alienating passive investors that couldnt care less about curating (that by the way will always be passive), assuming large accounts have some kind of glorified talent in recognizing quality content, trying to grab more power for yourself (your right of course)...

You assume STEEM is just a content monetization platform when in reality its a token distribution platform. The change to content placement STEEM could actually benefit from, which ofc doesnt require a such a radical change, is a STEEMIT UI design change, a bot upvote filter.

You disguise your proposal as a "lets fix trending", "lets make quality content win"..... and you know who will make good content win? We will!

Me and Kevin! So give us more money.

If you want to do something for the platform, focus on marketing. I just hope this never passes or STEEM will literally go down the toilet.

  • @yonny(61)· 2858d

I’m prepared to eat 10k calories a day with ex-lax and cover the streets in shit for my rewards.

  • @cannonball6(46)· 2858d

Look, I can see you are getting frustrated that you have not been able to galvanize the community to your cause. Let me point out the problem: you are combining two separate issues into one.

I think you would get broad agreement (with a significant exception that I’ll get to ina moment) that the economics of steemit are not functioning optimally.

However, let’s consider your proposed solution, and specifically your mission:

Mission: We need to devise and implement a new economic system that rewards the behavior we want with the most competitive returns while sacrificing the least in terms of trade offs.

The key point is “the behaviour we want.” Everyone wants something different, and therefore you will have great difficulty galvanizing the community as you would like.

So let’s get back to that significant exception I mentioned. I am talking about the whales who have the power to drive behaviour on steemit regardless of what others want. This is the real problem with the economics. It is the single reason why I will personally NEVER power up. Why would I do that when some random person I don’t know has the power to eliminate the value of my account at any time should they so choose?

So I will continue to move along with my $12 account value so that I don’t have to worry about that happening. The consequence of that is that my up/down votes are utterly meaningless. And so I live with that.

Considering that the vast majority of steemit users are actually in my position, whether they realize it or not, we have a problem. But your solution does nothing for us.

Now I think there are two things that can make a difference. The first is to remove variable voting power, that is the whales lose their power. People have responded to this saying it can’t work, but frankly I don’t care. The current system definitely is not working.

The second is to get rid of ALL bots. Now I am an intelligent person, but This simply isn’t my field. Again I have been told this is basically impossible but I find that truly hard to believe, and actually quite sad if the greatest minds couldn’t implement that if they actually tried. I realize that the real answer is they don’t want to, but hey, a guy can hope.

  • @cryptopie(78)· 2858d

I do not know about that issue but soon we will see some improvements in the system @trafalgar until the top 20 witnesses converge to settle the score.

  • @sinistry(62)· 2858d

I've said this before but i think part of the problem is formatting. It seems far easier, in my experience, anyway, to find good (or at least preferred) content on other social media because I can browse by topic, rather than by user. I may be the oddball but I need a feed that shows me news about topics I'm interested in rather than people I follow. I rarely see anything in my feed that interests me and when I do it's usually a fluke. I've been a member of this community for almost 2 years now and I still don't feel at home here. I pretty much given up on it but Steem Monsters drew me back in, but the whole platform still feels foreign and lacking to me. I love what Steemit could be but I'm not convinced it will ever get there.

  • @ats-david(75)· 2858d

These requests aren’t anything new (except the downvote thing). They have been publicly made for a very long time. Unfortunately, it looks like full linearity is here to stay and there appears to be no desire by our protocol gatekeepers and overlords to adjust the curation split.

For some background on how long I have been “officially” asking for these changes, you can read these posts and some pretty good discussions that ensued as a result, particularly in the second post:

    https://steemit.com/steemit/@ats-david/on-curation-rewards-and-their-necessity

    https://steemit.com/steemit/@ats-david/make-steemit-great-again-fork-this-place

    https://steemit.com/steem/@ats-witness/block-change-you-can-believe-in

It should be noted that the reverse auction ideas in the second post have just recently been implemented in the last hard fork...18+ months after that post. Still waiting on post/curation reward parity.

It’s the rationale for 50/50 that most people miss or won’t acknowledge - that non-bloggers are the demographic that we ought to cater to when it comes to incentives. It’s a much larger demographic and the more promising chance of “mass adoption” and consequent (potential) capital appreciation.

  • @sanmi(64)· 2858d

Kill all the bid bots, and make a team of curation to reward others. This place will be able to retain people, only if balance happens over a period of time. And only whales can build that culture. Right now, we are a community with completely opposite culture.

  • @nonameslefttouse(77)· 2858d

It's about time someone explained this shit in such a shitty way that it actually made sense.

  • @dana-edwards(75)· 2858d

You or Kevin could become a witness. We could vote for you and or for witnesses who agree that something need to be done. Witnesses are in control? Which witness wants to make a change?

  • @ucukertz(58)· 2858d

I agree to change the author/curation reward ratio to 50/50. But sadly even that won't stop a person having multiple accounts just vote their own account with other accounts because both author and curation reward still 100% goes to themselves.

  • @krnel(80)· 2858d

Problem with making 50% curation, is that it doesn't incentivize people to go manually curate more compared to selling their votes, because they can simply keep selling their votes, and make even more money without doing any work of curating themselves. Not a great plan.

  • @sharanaithal(62)· 2858d

    I disagree.

Focusing on UI or communities as a solution is like getting diagnosed with testicular cancer and deciding that the best way to treat it is by getting a nose job and your anus bleached.

    This works.

  • @theguruasia(69)· 2858d

@trafalgar, No doubt 10 posts a day is a really painful sh!t! But I know you do and it's hard to do for others! Exchanging votes like a lap dance, you scratch my back I scratch yours, could reduce it by little! But not totally! I think it's better we get STEEM POWER Limit per day! I mean your daily vote power you can utilized in 1 vote or 10 votes! It's not a matter! Until you keep STEEM as Power you can spend your daily reward without a doubt! COz, it's your stake, not mine isn't it? Trafy, don't tell me now I should be at Steem Fest 3 and will lap dance with Kevin!

    Cheers~

  • @steemmagnet(39)· 2858d

am glad someone with a huge SP voiced out about it apparently the witnesses already made up their minds see - @exyle's latest post sometimes I wonder if its just the witnesses who has the voice here what if the majority actually likes your suggestions sighs .. this place doesn't use to be like this there was even a list of authors that get Ned's vote perhaps to inspire everyone to write no shit posts if they want to get it unfortunately, the price of Steem brought out the best and the worst of everyone and basically that's something we can't control I hope you're right this diarrhea can still be imodiumed here it looks like it's winning for over a year now and is even being encouraged everything is accepted here so I guess shits too and shitty behavior too sad but true

  • @pbock(61)· 2858d

I agree that there needs to be some major tweaking to the economic system here on steemit.

After reading the comments section I believe something like:

    • tweaking self voting to be separate to voting, with only a couple available per 24h period maybe ? Or just adjusted to cost much more in terms of RC.

    • a separate down vote pool, as you mentioned, would be interesting. Though I think said down voting should have a cap at the total effect it can have. As it is a whale on steemit could nuke an accounts reputation and rewards to hell itself while consuming nearly none of their power, while even a minnow at 500SP can't do much to a whale without fear for their "life", unless they band together.

We need a flaggers protections program 😅

    • the higher curation system you mentioned would be interesting too.

    Posted using Partiko Android

  • @bitjunky(41)· 2858d

Yeah as long as we could make system to push the good content, that'll sway community's behaviour, bigshots will follow eventually. Good content staying on the top is the key, that way not just the creators but the general public will also come over here in long term.

  • @moghul(65)· 2858d

I struggle to understand steem economics but I think 50/50 or even 60/40 reward system would contain self voting and would would encourage the newbies and helps to lighten the quality content post. At present minnows are compelled to vote shitty posts just to get slice of curation rewards. Absolutely agree this must change.

  • @calatorulmiop(58)· 2858d

Totally off topic like a boss: image Congratulations for 10000 bots, dead accounts and last but not least, loyal and supportive followers ! May you promise them many more lap dances :D

  • @break-out-trader(70)· 2858d

I think steem is a small reflection of society. The rich can do as much nonsense as they want and still earn a lot and the poor can invent nuclear fusion and still remain poor.

  • @bien(69)· 2858d

boommmm...did sir kevin dance? i want to witness how kevin do the lap dance..😂😂😂

  • @dreamryder007(67)· 2858d

The way rewards are distributed is not what is ailing steem.

  • @therealwolf(77)· 2858d

The shitting on the street example might have been a bit extreme, but it's true. We can't expect people to behave the way we want them to, if we don't give them the right incentives.

When it comes to the decision, I will be all in favour of a higher curation reward and seperate downvote pool. Now, I'm pretty sure that these things probably need tweaking, but the current economic system doesn't work. And we can't force people to behave a certain way, if the rewards don't align.

  • @kabir88(61)· 2858d

I tried to fix it... And all I got was a -11 reputation :))

    Now where's that lapdance?

  • @liberalism(46)· 2858d

I agree on that, thus i believe that post payouts would be much higher as a result. It could change the way stackholders behave on this platform and make a big turnaround which will attarck new users and more importantly make them STAY. I'm here for about a week and couldn't help notice how trending page is mostly garbage. I do find some of them good writers but the effort invested doesen't match the payout, so it might look shady in the eyes of newcomers(assuming they are not aware of bots being payed for its services). But having in mind that steem is self driven community where there is no central authority to lead i have to say I'm glad seeing people who actually give a fuck about Steem in General without putting proffit on the first place.

Enjoyed reading bro, would like to see the same quality all over trending page.

Dissclaimer : I'm not sucking your balls, just wanted to make a point.

  • @dandesign86(69)· 2858d

Well something should be done, because this reward system is making people about as social as a Bobcat from Buffalo. Why don’t we just put it up for a community vote ? I’m pretty sure the majority would be up for a change !

  • @chesatochi(73)· 2858d

It is a cool initiative to try changing the current economic reward system. The priority should be after the SMT and see with other token life in action.

I see the Steemit problem totally in the same light as with trading cryptocurrency or any other comodity. Is the value on the market rising because of the real underlying value? Not really - there's 95% (or even more) speculation (short-term) involved. People want instant rewards not a long term investion. This attitude is then replicated to the Steem(it) odd behavior.. That's what I've been able to observe in my short confrontation with crypto world. Anyway, I'm still determined to work hard (in my spare time) on building my reputation and SP, because I'm an optimist by nature :) Thanks for a great article!

  • @yaanivapeji(65)· 2858d

From my little research about you @trafalgar. You have not been very active here and also you seem to vote more of those who are already successful on the platform, that is like self voting too and that is part of the problem of the platform.

Don't worry about how things are done here, it will fix itself.

  • @lordnigel(67)· 2858d

You raise some valid points, but nearly everything you mention here is part of a fragile eco system. Make a possible improvement to one thing, someone abuses another...I really do hope the balance gets sorted, but most of us users are helpless to do much more then vote for a witness. I'm not technical/smart enough to know how to instruct Steem inc on how to fix it, I just want a just and fair system.

  • @jasonshick(66)· 2858d

I like both you and @kevinwong, maybe that is just because of my slight affection for Asians. I completely agree that the current model is not working, this place is festering of late and something needs to be done. A 50/50 split might be the best way to accomplish this.

However going off of your post, you have only looked at the economic model and neglected the social aspect of the platform. Your notions would be accurate if this were a purely economic platform, but there is much more to it than just that. It's the same reason billions of people are on Facebook without receiving a penny. The social aspect really should not be overlooked. The social aspect is very powerful, but when it is smothered by self votes and the "me over everything" attitude, it gets drowned out.

If this was purely about money than I never would have stood up to clowns like bernie sanders knowing full well it would result in the loss of potential steem earnings. The same goes for many of the communities and votes that take place, people want to feel connection and Steem has done this in the past.

There is a lot to untangle with the current economic model but I think its important to understand there is much more than just the economic part to it.

  • @lunaticpandora(70)· 2858d

I can easily get behind the idea of 50/50 curation, that would encourage you to hunt for good content or join the best curation leagues since there's a chance for you to get great rewards with that.

I love the idea behind subsidizing flags, I've seen others proposing something more radical like a second voting mana bar just for flags, what's your take on this?

I would need to do some more reading to understand the impact of going to 1.3 instead of linear since I came to Steem after superlinear was gone and don't have any experience with the previous system.

Personally, I think you'll be shitting in the streets until SMT are released as I don't think the desire or priority time to 'toy' with the likely broken model is there.

The hope is that one day we can all run barefoot without brown squidgy stuff between our toes. And when that happens, I'm looking forward to more comedic writing from yourself.

Cheers, Asher - still not taking a shit in his own office or the streets he walks down.

  • @lada.kalina(48)· 2858d

You need to get already that steemit is not about content discovery. It is about competing-for-eyeballs economy.

Under this paradigm steemit is alive and well and made a huge leap with HF20 recently

  • @millhouze(50)· 2858d

beautifully said, I especially like the shit analogue

  • @holm(68)· 2858d

"Imagine you had a community that introduced a new law which rewarded a person $1000 every time they take a shit in public. Would it be surprising to discover, after a while, that the streets were flowing in diarrhea? Would you try to rectify this situation by asking people to be less greedy? Or perhaps try to educate people to shift from a culture of shitting on the streets to one of, well, not shitting on the streets? Would there be a point in asking how the fuck do you even manage to shit 10 times a day?"

This could not have been better said.

  • @schattenjaeger(71)· 2858d

We probably agree on what we want.

But the problem with presenting this stuff is that it needs to be presented in a way that states how the changes would affect the STEEM price and value.

For instance, it would make sense on surface level that an appealing Steemit would onboard more people into the ecosystem. Of course, these people should also be such that they would buy STEEM and power up. I think there's still work to be done in regards to incentivizing that.

But my point is that merely stating how it'd be cool to have an ideal ecosystem where if you work hard and produce good content, you'll get rewarded probably won't cut it because most of the big shots are only looking at their profits and profits alone.

So, it needs to be sold to them in a way that makes it clear how they would benefit financially.

Not saying it can't be done.

  • @sirknight(68)· 2858d

80% of the reward pool is going to plankton, minnows and dolphins. This is far better most economies of the world.

There appear to be many orcas and whales happy to spread the love.

Communities are popping up all over the place.

Once SMTs arrive many Steemians will care more about other tokens than a Steem utility token anyway.

But the main drawback in your idea - why would anyone want to post when they are only receiving 50% of the reward showing on their post? This would turn more people off than it would attract. If anything 25% of the reward is too much.

It also won't solve anything - if the bad actors want 100% - your plan just means they don't have to work as hard to get it.

I don't see any problems here that won't fix themselves with the natural redistribution of Steem as people come and go, plus the introduction of SMTs.

I think you are wrong about communities too. They make a big difference.

A single whale can't change the whole system. But they can make a difference to many. And with discount accounts they can now start onboarding them too.

I really haven't followed your career here since the days of the Steem Wars - but Team Australia is still going strong and now SteemChurch too and this is just what I am doing.

If you genuinely want to make a difference and build the value of your investment - get on the ground and use your capital to create opportunities for the newbies. (Perhaps you are - I just don't know so sorry if I am wrong.)

    Cheers.

    SirKnight.

Communities have gone some way in rewarding certain types of content. The whole concept of "high quality content" is based on perception. I could write an article about dicks that's funny as fuck but won't count for shit to people at utopian.

I actually wrote something very similar and posted it just a minute after this post.

And looking at the comments, it seems many others are doing the same. Many of us are tired and craving better from this platform, to push interaction ahead of quick gains.

As for the UI: I've made countless posts in the past referring to how awful the site's UI is when it comes to searching for content, given the only content that can be found is in a sea of fresh posts or thrown to the top of a category from artificial curation. It's certainly frustrating to see absolutely nothing being done to try and improve content discovery. It's all just very lazy with a "Not our problem" argument from Steemit Inc.

Unfortunately I'm not going to Steemfest, but I think I have forgotten to use a free witness vote.

    Here's to a better Steemit.

Imagine you had a community that introduced a new law which rewarded a person $1000 every time they take a shit in public. Would it be surprising to discover, after a while, that the streets were flowing in diarrhea?

Sounds like San Francisco, sans the being rewarded $1,000 part.

What i want! To read good articles / see good posts that interest me and upvote them myself with reasonable reward system 40/60 ... 50/50 what ever works. I've currently trying different bots to get return but it's really not what i want. i will keep buying steem, power it up, and look for good content to curate. tell me which witnesses are in line with what i want and they get my vote. by the way no hurry in fixing it - steem just keeps getting cheaper - helps me lol

i think HF20 includes that self vote is worthless

I was just about to make a post regarding the flaws I've noticed with this platform. It seems to me that there is a perpetual motion machine of sorts in regards to "acts that get a reward", rather than acts that will benefit the community. Interesting post, and thank you for sharing.

Supporting actual good content will, on average, cost you 75% of your returns in lost opportunity

Mind blown. Would have tagged @exyle but the mute button has suffered enough.

Kevin will be there and he'll give you a private lap dance if you help us fix the economy.

I am on the side of the 50/50 algo which used to fill me with fear but I now realise would/should encourage more curation and intelligent curation.

I still have some concerns about superlinearity no matter how slight unless it was offset by some type of plateau after a set percentage or amount where it became slightly negative. Is that a thing?

Don't ejaculate with delight at the following drawing. It's scary in its intense beauty. Red is the model I am wittering on about above

The reason I think of a bell curve type thing is so that users who use bid bots for example did not take advantage of the slight superlinearity to gain even higher profit by stacking bot votes

This is a pressing matter, reason why you had to wake up the sleeping dog. This issue has been a general problem that can't be fixed on the platform, the best place to savage the situation is at steemfest since Ned will be present.
