I hope you’re all well. I’ve been watching quite a few films recently – mostly horror films – some good, some bad and others just ‘meh’, but there was one I really liked because it didn’t focus on showing blood, but rather on creating a tense and unsettling atmosphere whilst exploring what’s most frightening to face: guilt. This film is called: Hokum: The Witch’s Curse.
The story centres on Ohm Bauman, a famous writer suffering from writer’s block that’s preventing him from finishing his book. Ohm decides to travel to Ireland, to a remote hotel that seems to have been frozen in time – the place where Ohm’s parents spent their honeymoon and where he plans to scatter his ashes.
The opening minutes stand out for two things: the hotel has an unsettling atmosphere that doesn’t seem to bother its staff, and Ohm is a jerk. He comes across as rude, crude and unfriendly, but behind that behaviour, you can sense there’s something more – something painful. This is noticed by Fiona, who manages to connect with Ohm and who instinctively decides to go to his room, only to find that he has hanged himself. Fiona and Alby (a hotel bellboy) cut him down, saving his life.
But by the time Ohm wakes up in hospital, he discovers that Fiona has disappeared. One intriguing thing about this hotel is that you can go everywhere except the suite, because rumour has it that a witch from Irish folklore lives there. Ohm is annoyed to learn that it is the only place in the hotel they haven’t checked in their search for Fiona, so he and Jerry (Fiona’s homeless friend) decide to go in.
What Ohm didn’t expect was that he would have to endure an ordeal in which he would not only have to survive the witch and disturbing entities, but also confront the source of his pain and guilt – all whilst Fiona’s lifeless body watches him, waiting for justice to be done.
This is a film that blends Irish folklore, supernatural horror, suspense and psychological trauma. Irish folklore is the starting point for everything, giving rise to legends, superstitions and beliefs that seem to be deeply rooted in history, yet are not the most terrifying thing to face. The story is not about depicting malevolent entities, but about confronting the inner demons that haunt us.
The hotel suite where Ohm ends up locked away reflects, in every corner, the pain, suffering and tragedy left behind by the souls who once inhabited it; it becomes the stage where Ohm will confront his past. Unbeknown to him, beneath it lies a hellish corridor leading to purgatory – where Ohm will end up if he does not forgive himself. I really liked the atmosphere of the film; at every moment, the hotel itself feels like a labyrinth and you never know where you’ll end up.
There’s a certain creature in the story that looks genuinely unsettling – it’s not that it’s gory, but rather that it reminds me of a mix of characters from TV series and children’s cartoons, transformed into a horrifying creature with a dark and malevolent sense of humour.
I quite liked the film; I found it entertaining, particularly in terms of finding out whether Ohm could carry on and discovering who harmed Fiona and why.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Estos días estuve viendo varias películas, la mayoría de ellas de terror, unas buenas, otras malas y otras simplemente mehh, pero hubo una que me gustó mucho porque no se enfocó en mostrar sangre, sino en crear una atmósfera tensa e inquietante mientras se explora lo que más miedo genera enfrentar, la culpa. Esta película se llama: Hokum: La maldición de la bruja.
La historia se centra en Ohm Bauman, un famoso escritor que tiene un bloqueo que no le permite terminar su libro. Ohm decide viajar a Irlanda, a un remoto hotel que parece haberse quedado detenido en el tiempo, donde los padres de Ohm pasaron su luna de miel y dónde el planea esparcir sus cenizas.
Los primero minutos destacan en dos cosas, el hotel tiene una vibra inquietante que no parece perturbar a sus trabajadores y Ohm es un idiota. Se muestra descortés, grosero y poco amable pero detrás de ese comportamiento se nota que hay algo más, algo doloroso. Esto es notado por Fiona, quien logra conectar con Ohm y quien decide por instinto ir a su habitación, solo para encontrar que este se ha colgado. Fiona y Alby (botones del hotel) lo descuelgan salvando le la vida.
Pero para cuando Ohm despierta en el hospital descubre que Fiona ha desaparecido. Algo intrigante de este hotel es que se puede ir a todos lados excepto a la suite por que según rumores ahí viva una bruja del folclore irlandés y Ohm se molesta al enterarse que es el único sitio del hotel que no han revisado para buscar a Fiona, por lo que él y Jerry (vagabundo amigo de Fiona) deciden entrar.
Lo que Ohm no se esperaba es que tendría que vivir un calvario donde no solo tendrá que sobrevivir a la bruja y a entidades perturbadoras, sino a enfrentar el origen de su dolor y de su culpa, todo mientras el cuerpo inerte de Fiona lo observa esperando que le den justicia.
Esta es una película que mezcla folclore irlandés, terror sobrenatural, suspenso y trauma psicológico. El folclore irlandés es el punto de inicio de todo, dando paso a leyendas, supersticiones y creencias que parecen estar completamente arraigadas a la historia, pero que aun así no son lo más terrorífico de enfrentar. La historia no trata de mostrar entidades perturbadoras, sino de enfrentar a los demonios internos que nos acompañan.
La suite del hotel donde termina encerrado Ohm refleja en cada espacio el dolor, el sufrimiento y la tragedia que dejaron las almas de quienes la habitaron y que se convertirá en el teatro donde Ohm enfrentará su pasado. Sin saber que debajo de esta existe un pasillo infernal que lleva al purgatorio y donde Ohm terminará si no se perdona. La atmósfera de la película me gustó mucho; en cada momento El hotel mismo parece un laberinto y no sabes dónde terminarás.
Hay cierta criatura de la historia que de verdad se ve perturbadora, no se trata de que se vea sangrienta sino que me recuerda a una mezcla de ciertos personaje de serie y caricaturas para niños pero transformada en una criatura horripilante, con un humor oscuro y malvado.
La película me gustó bastante, se me hizo entretenida sobretodo para descubrir si Ohm podría seguir adelante y de descubrir quien y porque dañó a Fiona.
