It’s been a while since an anime has hooked me this much. Whilst I was looking for something to watch, I came across this series – which is quite a few years old – and it’s simply incredible. Even whilst watching it, I thought back and realised I’d actually seen it before: one episode when I was younger, but I never knew the name until now: Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
This is a mecha anime with a profound political focus, set in a world not far removed from our own near future, where the question arises: can violence only be ended by violence? The story is set in the year 2307; by this time, the Earth’s fossil fuels have been completely depleted, so the nations of the world and humanity in general have had to make a complete transition to the use of solar energy. It is here that three blocs of nations emerge, joining forces to build orbital lifts (essentially lifts that reach into space) and a solar energy generation system controlled by these three political-economic blocs; yet even in such a world, humanity remains divided.
As I said, Gundam takes a deeply political approach centred on realistic global conflicts (wars, terrorism, manipulation and the struggle for resources), and given that this world is divided into three political blocs: the Solar Energy and Free Nations Union (OAS, Australia and Japan), the Human Reform League (China, Russia and India) and the Advanced European Union (European Union), wars are endless, sparked by religious, colonial or energy-related motives.
This continues until a fed-up and determined group of people organise themselves and say: ‘We’re going to intervene and take on the whole world.’ This is how an organisation called ‘Celestial Being’ decides to act; until now, it has apparently been led by a man who died 200 years ago. This is a paramilitary organisation determined to eradicate war using its ultra-advanced and powerful Gundams, and they travel the world eradicating war through interventionism.
The protagonist is Setsuna F. Seiei, a young man scarred by war and obsessed with the idea of ‘changing the world’, who, alongside three Gundam masters, plans to bring about peace; but as the series progresses, that idea becomes more complex – for are they heroes, terrorists or dictators?
This anime offers a critique of modern geopolitics, war and its motives, as well as the fact that stronger nations provoke or promote conflicts for their own benefit; and, in this case, it is worse because everyone has giant robots and every political bloc is in a race to make theirs better than their rivals’, and the fact that the first thing that crossed the nations’ minds was to capture a Gundam did not bode well.
The political and motivational dynamics here are complex, especially on the part of “Celestial Being,” which was immediately labeled a terrorist organization (which seems to have been part of its objective), even though its goal is peace. Regardless of its objectives, it is viewed with hostility by the rest of the world due to the highly advanced technology it possesses, and the ethical debate surrounding it is intense.
The episodes move at a fast pace; the nations don’t even know how to organize themselves, and Ser Celestial’s Gundams were already putting a stop to wars in the Middle East—by force, of course, but achieving their goal nonetheless. The visual quality is quite good, especially for a series from the 2000s, and I really like the robot designs—that is, the style is modern, but with vibrant colors, and the way they fight made the other mechas that aren’t Gundams look almost like scrap metal, hahaha. And the main characters—especially the Master Gundams, oh my gosh—their personalities seem to be shaped by the consequences of war.
I’m barely halfway through the first season, but it’s really good, so I looked it up online and it turns out that Gundam 00 is just an alternate universe within the entire franchise, set in a timeline called the Universal Century… At least I’ve found something to keep me entertained when I have nothing else to do, hahaha.

Hace tiempo que un anime no me enganchaba tanto y es que, mientras buscaba qué ver, encontré esta obra que tiene sus buenos años y que es simplemente increíble. Incluso mientras la veía, hice memoria y me di cuenta de que ya la había visto alguna vez, un episodio cuando era más joven pero nunca supe el nombre y hasta ahorita es que lo supe: Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
Este es un anime de género mecha con un profundo enfoque político, con una construcción del mundo no lejos del futuro real, donde surge la pregunta: ¿solo la violencia puede acabar con la violencia? Y es que esta historia se sitúa en el año 2307; en esta época, el combustible fósil de la Tierra se ha agotado por completo, por lo que las naciones del mundo y la humanidad en general han tenido que transicionar por completo al uso de la energía solar. Es ahí donde nacen tres grupos de naciones que unieron esfuerzos para construir ascensores orbitales (prácticamente un ascensor que llega hasta el espacio) y un sistema que genera energía solar controlado por estos tres bloques político-económicos, pero incluso en un mundo así la humanidad no permanece unida.
Como dije, Gundam tiene un profundo enfoque político centrado en conflictos globales realistas (guerras, terrorismo, manipulación y lucha por los recursos), y dado que este mundo está dividido en tres bloques políticos: La Unión de Energía Solar y Naciones Libres (OEA, Australia y Japón), la Liga de Reforma Humana (China, Rusia e India) y la Unión Avanzada Europea (Unión Europea) las guerras no tienen fin, iniciadas por motivos religiosos, colonizadores o energéticos.
Eso se mantiene así hasta que una gente harta y decidida se organiza y dice: “Vamos a intervenir y a pelearnos con todo el mundo”. Es así como decide actuar una organización llamada (Ser Celestial), hasta ahora aparentemente encabezada por un hombre que murió hace 200 años. Esta es una organización paramilitar decidida a erradicar la guerra usando sus superavanzados y poderosos Gundams, y van por el mundo erradicando la guerra mediante el intervencionismo.
El protagonista es Setsuna F. Seiei, un joven marcado por la guerra, obsesionado con la idea de “cambiar el mundo”, quien junto a tres maestros de gundams planea traer la paz, pero mientras avanza la serie, esa idea se hace más compleja porque ¿son héroes, terroristas o dictadores?
Este anime hace una crítica a la geopolítica moderna, a la guerra y sus motivos, así como al hecho de que naciones más fuertes provocan o promueven conflictos para su propio beneficio y, en este caso, es peor porque todos tienen robots gigantes y cada bloque político está en la carrera para hacerlos mejor que el rival, y el hecho de que lo primero que cruzó por la mente de las naciones era capturar a un Gundam no auguraba nada bueno.
El enfoque político y motivacional es complejo aquí, sobre todo por parte de “Ser celestial”, quien fue tachado de primera como un ente terrorista (lo que parece haber sido parte de su objetivo), aunque su objetivo sea la paz y que, más allá de sus objetivos, es percibido por el resto del mundo con hostilidad por la tecnología tan avanzada que poseen, además de que el debate ético está fuerte.
Los episodios avanzan con un ritmo intenso; las naciones no saben ni cómo organizarse y los Gundams de Ser celestial ya estaban deteniendo guerras en el medio oriente, a la fuerza por supuesto, pero logrando el objetivo. La calidad visual es bastante buena sobre todo para una serie de los 2000´s y me gustan mucho los diseños de los robots, es decir, el estilo es moderno, pero con colores vibrantes y la forma en que pelean hacían que los otras mechas que no son Gundam parecieran casi que de chatarra jajaja. Y los personajes principales, sobre todo los maestros Gundams dioss, sus personajes parecen estar caracterizados para ser las consecuencias de la guerra.
Apenas voy por la mitad de la primera temporada, pero está muy buena, entonces la busqué en internet y resulta que Gundam 00 solo es un universo alternativo de toda una franquicia, de una línea temporal llamada Universal Century…Por lo menos ya encontré con que entretenerme cuando no tengo nada que hacer jajaja
