A few months ago, we received the wonderful news that my neighbors' daughter was pregnant; after so many years of living side-by-side, we view each other as much more than just neighbors—we are family—and I feel as though that young woman is my own niece, so we were overjoyed at the news. We were recently invited to celebrate the upcoming arrival of the family's newest member at a gathering that—thanks to the increasingly common use of Anglicisms in our society—is now called a "baby shower." We spent a truly delightful time in that pleasant, relaxed family setting, enjoying a welcome break from our daily routine. The children were having fun in the pool (most of them, anyway), while others played soccer on the fresh grass; meanwhile, the adults chatted and took part in other activities. My wife and I, for instance, were delighted to see Mrs. Margarita (the baby's maternal grandmother), as it had been a long time since we last saw her, and talking to her is an absolute pleasure.
Hace unos meses nos dieron la maravillosa noticia de que la hija de mis vecinos estaba embarazada, el caso es que luego de tantísimos años de convivencia ya nosotros nos vemos como mucho más que vecinos, somos familia, y a esa chica la siento como si fuese mi sobrina, así que tuvimos una alegría muy grande en casa. Recientemente nos invitaron a celebrar la pronta llegada del nuevo miembro de la familia, en una celebración que gracias a los cada vez más frecuente anglicismos de nuestra sociedad, ahora llaman "Baby Shower". El caso es que pasamos momentos sumamente agradables en este entorno familiar, ameno y fresco, saliendo de la rutina diaria. Los niños estaban divirtiéndose en al piscina (la mayoría de ellos) y otros se dedicaron a jugar futbol sobre el fresco pasto, los adultos en cambio nos dedicamos a conversar a participar en actividades de otro tipo, mi esposa y yo por ejemplo estábamos muy felices de ver a la señora Margarita (la abuela de la madre del bebé) ya que teníamos mucho tiempo sin verla y hablar con ella es un absoluto deleite.
There were all sorts of activities involving both young people and adults; while they were genuinely fun, I preferred to watch, as I’ve never really felt like participating in that kind of thing myself. One activity struck me as particularly tricky: it involved feeding someone baby food, but the person doing the feeding couldn't use their hands—they had to hold the spoon in their mouth. This made the process incredibly difficult and drew plenty of laughter.
Hubo actividades de todo tipo en las que participaron jóvenes y adultos, pero aunque son de verdad muy divertidas yo prefiero ver pues nunca me ha apetecido participar en actividades de este tipo. Hubo una de ellas que me pareció especialmente complicada pues se trataba de alimentar con compotas a una persona, pero la persona que suministraba la compota no debía usar las manos sino sostener la cucharilla con la boca, lo cuál dificultaba muchísimo el proceso y arrancó muchas risas.
My wife and I had a wonderful time in that setting, away from our daily routine, sharing time and conversation with family—with people we hadn't seen in a long while. We had fun, laughed, and reminisced about the old days when our daughters and the neighbors' children were little; it all felt as if it had happened just yesterday.
Mi esposa y yo pasamos un momento muy agradable en aquel ambiente, alejados de la rutina diaria, compartiendo tiempo y conversaciones con la familia, con esas personas a las que teníamos tiempo sin ver, nos divertimos, nos reímos y nos pusimos a recordar viejos tiempos, cuando nuestras hijas y los hijos de los vecinos estaban pequeños, todo eso nos pareció como si hubiese sido ayer.
And, of course, a photo with the mom-to-be was a must; I can hardly believe that the girl I watched grow up is now about to become a mother. I wish her, her husband, and her baby the very best with all my heart—may they have a long, fulfilling, and happy life, always under the blessing of Almighty God and with everything they need materially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Y desde luego no podía faltar la foto con la futura madre del bebé, me parece mentira que esta niña a la que yo vi crecer ahora está a punto de convertirse en madre, le deseo de todo corazón lo mejor para ella, su esposo y su bebé, que tengan una vida larga, plena y feliz, amparados siempre por la bendición de Dios todopoderoso y con todo lo necesario material, mental, emocional y espiritualmente.
