This book presents a "perfect" picture of wealthy families living in a luxurious country club, surrounded by every amenity and enjoying a seemingly flawless life where nothing could possibly go wrong. Every Thursday, the husbands gather to talk and drink, while the wives meet separately for dinner—calling themselves "the Widows" because they feel somewhat excluded from their husbands' lives. However, everything changes drastically when that nickname becomes a reality: one December night, three of the men are found dead, floating in a swimming pool, and it is subsequently revealed that they had been harboring serious financial troubles they never disclosed to their families.
Este libro nos presenta el cuadro "Perfecto" de familias adineradas, todas viven en un country club muy lujoso, lleno de todas las comodidades que necesitan y una vida aparentemente perfecta en la que nada puede ir mal. Todos los jueves los esposos se juntan a conversar y beber, mientras las esposas por su cuenta se reúnen a cenar ese mismo día, llamándose "las Viudas" ya que se sienten excluidas de cierta manera de la vida de sus maridos, pero todo cambia drásticamente cuando ese apodo "las viudas" pasa a convertirse en una realidad, ya que una noche de diciembre tres de esos hombres aparecen muertos flotando en una piscina, y posteriormente se descubre que tenían graves problemas económicos que nunca mencionaron a sus familias.
This alleged accident is merely the outcome of a life built on lies—the collapse of a house of cards and a reminder of human fragility. Many people strive to appear stoic even as they crumble inside, preferring to collapse in silence rather than acknowledge their own errors or problems; the husbands chose to evade responsibility for their actions, leaving the immense task of resolving these issues to their wives—who knew nothing of what was happening. Yet, this also brings another problem to light: a lack of communication. The wives, for their part, made no effort to find out what was going on or to contribute anything—not even a single useful idea.
Este supuesto accidente solo es el reflejo del resultado de una vida de mentiras, el colapso de un castillo de naipes, el recordatorio de los frágiles que somos los seres humanos, muchas personas pretenden parecer estoicas aún y cuando se están derrumbando por dentro, y prefieren colapsar en silencio antes que reconocer sus propios errores o problemas, los esposos prefirieron evadir la responsabilidad de sus actos y dejar el enorme tarea de resolver esos problemas a sus esposas, als cuales no sabían nada de lo que ocurría, pero al mismo tiempo esto saca a luz otro problema, la falta de comunicación, ellas tampoco se preocupaban por saber que sucedía, por aportar algo, al menos una idea útil.
The novel serves as a powerful social critique; the exclusive neighborhood is essentially a bubble that isolates the wealthy from the country's reality—its poverty and injustices. Within that "bubble," abuses, debts, and hypocrisy run rampant—a total debacle that no one dares to acknowledge, as they prefer to keep up appearances. Another striking element is the novel's ironic title, which—as I mentioned—becomes reality when the spouses choose to "escape" their responsibilities and that life of lies and absurd pretenses once reality hits them head-on.
La novela es una gran crítica social, el barrio exclusivo es prácticamente una burbuja que aísla a los ricos de la realidad del país (la pobreza y las injusticias) dentro de esa "burbuja" ocurren abusos, hay deudas, hipocresía, en fin, toda una debacle que nadie se atreve a admitir ya que para ellos es mejor vivir de apariencias. Otra cosa que llama la atención es el título irónico de la novela, el cuál, como les dije se vuelve una realidad, ya que los esposos optaron por "escapar" de sus responsabilidades y esa vida de mentiras y apariencias absurdas cuando la realidad los golpeó de frente.
