This book by Gabriel García Márquez centers on Ana Magdalena Bach, a woman who observes a yearly ritual: every August 16th, she travels to an island to visit and lay flowers at her mother's grave. However, during one of these visits, she meets a man and spends the night with him; although she initially feels remorse—having been married for twenty-seven years—she eventually acknowledges a sense of liberation. Consequently, she begins traveling to the island with the aim not only of visiting her mother's grave but also of having new experiences with chance encounters, viewing these as a form of sexual liberation; yet, during her final trips, she reveals details about her own life and even uncovers secrets regarding her mother.

The novel has often been interpreted as a form of "female liberation" or a right to explore life beyond the roles of mother and wife "imposed" by society—a view I completely disagree with. Infidelity is infidelity, regardless of who commits it, and it should be equally condemned. Furthermore, the roles of mother and wife are not societal impositions but choices presumably made out of personal preference; individuals decide whether or not to marry, become mothers, or even maintain a marriage. I believe that if a relationship falls into a rut or monotony, it does not justify acts of disloyalty like infidelity. Instead, there should be enough trust to foster dialogue and find solutions—or, if nothing can be done, to maturely accept that each person needs to go their own separate way.

However, we can never know if that was the true approach García Márquez intended for the female character, given that this is a posthumous novel edited by Cristóbal Pera from unpolished drafts left by the author—who was already experiencing memory lapses. Consequently, I view it more as a fascinating narrative sketch; yet, even so—and despite lacking the nuances of Magical Realism found in most of Gabo’s works—it certainly retains the essence of the Colombian Caribbean.
