Bitchat removed from app store in India

Was sagt ihr dazu? Habt ihr Bitchat schon ausprobiert?

English

Jack Dorsey’s peer-to-peer messaging app, Bitchat, has been banned from the Apple App Store in India.

This is yet another example of why app stores are problematic, as they give a central authority control over the apps you install and use on your smartphone or PC.

The companies behind the app stores often act as gatekeepers, allowing or banning certain apps for moral reasons, enforcing strict community guidelines that sometimes go beyond legal requirements, or demanding a share of the revenue generated by apps. It’s pretty intense when you think about it.

In this case, however, the Indian government likely exerted pressure.

That’s because Bitchat allows users to send and distribute encrypted messages via an ad-hoc Bluetooth mesh network without relying on central nodes. It’s a brilliant idea that can even work during blackouts if there are enough users within range.

What do you think? Have you tried or using Bitchat already?

That sucks to see, and I don't like the government banning applications because they can't control the information. I haven't used Bitchat before.

I think app stores are useful for security but giving one company too much control can become a real problem

I expect it to be ban because of the strict guidelines and compliance

I have not heard about Bitchat and I will try search about it

I never tried that one, but shame it got banned.

I believe it's more about centralized source and government control & their bizzare policies to ban. The need of the hour is for direct download from the main source without any problems or obstacles, but ain't about to happen anytime soon.
