How groceries are getting more and more expensive. Grocery stores are cutting down discounts.

3,000 products excluded from discounts

English

About two weeks ago, the discount system at Billa (REWE) in Austria was changed. Since the start of the pandemic, customers have been receiving four, and later three, 25% discount stickers at the beginning of each week, which could be reused.

This system was changed two weeks ago; now you have to hand in the discount stickers at the register, but what bothers many customers is that you can suddenly use the discount stickers on far fewer products than before.

It feels like every other product is now excluded from the discount stickers. These products are now called “Immer Clever” (IC); their prices have actually dropped slightly, but not by the 25% that customers used to be able to save with the stickers.

In general, it’s clear that this is simply another measure to somewhat conceal rampant inflation and currency devaluation. First, they reduce the product size (shrinkflation)—and sometimes, unfortunately, the quality as well—then they gradually cut back on discounts, going from -50% on products nearing their expiration date to just -30%, fewer discount stickers, and so on, until eventually prices are raised on an ongoing basis.

What do you think of the new discount system at Billa?

The fact that discounts introduced during the pandemic are still in effect demonstrates the terrible management by those in power.

I think it sucks because we know that the economy isn't doing great, and wages aren't keeping up with costs. There isn't much we can do about it, though. The companies will do whatever they can to make the most money.

  • For me they should have a standard process on identifying the items that will be part of the discount system

I think the discount system is a bit confusing and can be chaotic to the beginners
