A Glimpse into Our Rural Homestead: Hens, House-Arrest Roosters, and Visiting Cows

Good day, Hivers!

I shared our little chicks a few days ago, so today I'd like to show our hens and roosters, plus some special guests 😁.

Empty lots surround our house, so we can raise chickens, fish, and grow fruits and vegetables. We also share the lot with other neighbors.

Here are some of the hens we got.

We have a lot of hens, but since we let them roam the vacant lot, I only managed to photograph a few of them. We don't feed them regularly because they have enough food everywhere. From our house to the vacant lot, there are a lot of fruit trees and some edible plants they can freely munch on. There are bananas, papayas, avocados, sweet potatoes, wild cucumbers, and more.

Here are photos of them hunting for their lunch. 😁

There are also a lot of snails and bugs here. It's like a feast for them every day.

However, the roosters are tied up in the backyard. We have 2, and every time they see each other, they'll fight 😁. They also do that to our neighbors' roosters. That's why they're on house arrest πŸ˜‚.

And for our special guests, here are the neighbors' cows. Because of the lush vegetation next to our house, our neighbor sometimes brings his cows for a little treat.

In some rural places here in the Philippines, it's common to share spaces, especially for livestock.

In our case, we share the lot with other neighbors; we look after their cattle to get the manure for our plants 😁

It's a give and take. Not everyone may agree because sometimes this may cause a bit of a conflict as well. We just need to make sure those cattle can't reach our garden.

I can relate to this kind of rural life. I like seeing the hens freely looking for food, while the roosters are on house arrest because they keep fighting. And the cows visiting for grass while leaving manure for the plants is so nice give-and-take.
