English version
When your mind becomes your worst enemy
Good morning, Holos&Lotus community, this time it was very difficult for me to choose what topic to write about this week because many came to my mind, in addition to several things that happened to me.
But in the end, I decided on this one because I believe that many times it is ourselves who hold us back when it comes to doing things.
Sometimes when we are afraid, we don't know which option to choose or simply don't know how to act; the first thing we do is analyze, think, and overthink too much. Or well, at least that usually happens to me.
And even more so, if we are women, I've noticed that we turn ourselves into novels, movies, books haha, especially about what could or couldn't happen, and that's not good at all. This reminds me of the movie Inside Out where a new emotion called Anxiety appears, which imagines a countless number of possible scenarios and in the end, all of that ends up affecting the protagonist.
I could say that it is fear that makes us act this way, some will tell me in the comments if I am right or not, but I feel that we let ourselves be carried away a lot by fear and also by what others will say.
So I asked myself: how can I silence those voices or stop paying attention to them? And something that has worked for me is thinking: what if I do it and it goes well? What if I encourage myself and learn something? In other words, positive thoughts, not just negative ones.
It has also worked for me to just dive in and do it without overthinking. Just do it and that's it, obviously not in every situation, but in those that can be a great opportunity for me.
These thoughts don't completely go away, but there are ways to interrupt them and change the way you respond to them. Researching a bit more about it, I was able to find these other options:
- Interrupt them with an action: When you realize that mental loop is starting, you can say the word "Stop!" out loud and accompany it with a physical gesture like a clap or a snap, that can help you interrupt that cycle of thoughts.
- Question the thought: You can ask yourself some important questions, don't accept that thought as an absolute truth. Is it real?, do I have proof?, how does it make me feel and what are the consequences of believing it? Then, turn it into a more realistic version.
- Change the words: You can change absolute words, like "always" or "never," for more flexible expressions. Example: Instead of "I never do anything right," try "Today has been a difficult day, but I can fix it."
- Don't pay them too much attention: If you fight with a thought or try to analyze it a thousand times, it can make you give even more importance to the thought and keep it spinning in your mind. You can see it as a passing cloud and nothing more, the technique of Mindfulness or full attention also helps.
- Breathe and anchor yourself: Stop everything, take a deep breath, and focus your attention on your senses (seeing, listening, or touching), this way you will take your mind out of alarm mode.
- Channel the energy: Write on a piece of paper what goes through your mind, draw, or engage in some physical activity; this helps release the tension accumulated from overthinking.
I think they are very good techniques that, although they may seem simple, help a lot. For example, I used to paint and draw, and I felt that everything flowed better. I haven't done it anymore, but I think I'll do it again.
This also depends on what works best for each person; even going for a walk helps a lot, it distracts you and you come back more relaxed, with new thoughts.
I think the idea is to break out of that loop. I also believe that it helps a lot to share what is happening to us with someone we trust, like friends or family, because they can give you a different perspective, which would help you see the whole picture better.
I hope these techniques help you, and if you know of any other techniques, it would be great if you could share them in the comments. You know, don't let negative thoughts fill you with pessimism, because they can not only affect your behavior but also your emotional well-being.
See you in the next post!
