ENGLISH VERSION

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949)

Good evening, Scrobble Life community, today I came across this old movie that I got to know a long time ago and that makes me laugh a lot in certain scenes; overall, the whole story is very funny.

I know that several adaptations of this legend have been made, in this case, it is an animated version. So, without further ado, let the movie roll.

🎬 A bit of context

It all begins with Ichabod, a teacher who arrives in the town of Sleepy Hollow. The first impression he made on all the inhabitants was one of fright; they say he was so ugly that he could even scare ghosts, haha.

But since he was a teacher, everyone had great respect for him, and he was very intelligent and seemed to get along well with everyone.

One day he meets the daughter of the richest man in the area, Katrina Van Tassel, who was so beautiful that all the men fought over her, flirted with her, helped her, basically did everything for her. She had a whole group of admirers.

When the professor saw her, he was obviously captivated by her, but not necessarily because of her beauty, but rather because of her great fortune. It turns out that Ichabod was a businessman, meaning he liked money and obviously made his appointments and had friendships with people who suited him.

But in the field of love, not everything was settled: apart from the various suitors of Katrina, there was one who scared them all away and who, you could say, was like the local hero; they called him "Brom Bones."

Ichabod was very cunning and was not going to let other men, especially "Brom Bones," take his girl.

One fine day, on Halloween nite, Katrina's father organizes a very elegant party, so she takes this opportunity to set these two up as rivals. As expected, Ichabod stole the spotlight that nite: he was kind, attentive, a good conversationalist and dancer, he seemed perfect.

Until "Brom Bones" noticed he had a weakness: he was very superstitious and scared of horror stories, so "Brom Bones" started telling a scary story to the guests. Ichabod tried to turn a deaf ear, but "Brom Bones" insisted more, trying to make him scream.

And so it was: he also told the story of the headless horseman, and ended up super scared. On the way home, he hurried to avoid encountering this being, because it turned out it was roaming those parts.

Will Ichabod encounter this being or was it just a tale of lies? If you want to know what happened, I invite you to watch the movie. And if you've already seen it, keep reading.

⚠ ALERT: From now on, there will be many spoilers, so you have been warned.

♥ What I liked the most

Since the appearance of this character, I found the design super funny, hehe. As you can see, he is someone tall, long, skinny, with a big nose and giant feet.

Something I really liked about this story is how it is narrated, using very sophisticated language and rhymes, which describe the scene so well that it seems you wouldn't need to see the image.

From the beginning, Ichabod did not get along with "Brom Bones," because they both fought for Katrina's love. So "Brom Bones" always teased him.

There is a very funny scene where Ichabod is singing with a group of women; when he was supposed to do a solo, "Brom Bones" makes a dog howl. Ichabod, super worried, for a moment thought his voice had failed him, but it was just a prank.

Also, when everyone saw this teacher for the first time, they were so scared that even the animals ran away or hid in terror, hehe.

This teacher was super clever because he took the opportunity to visit the families of the children who had some problem or were rude, so instead of punishing them, he visited their homes. That's how he found out which families had the best meals.

Now, when he met Katrina, it was a super funny scene because, being so dazed by her beauty, he accidentally put a chicken on his head and ate his hat, haha. Then he fell and sat on a big cake.

Something that surprises me a lot is that the teacher was very intelligent and knew how to earn people's appreciation and trust. So he ended up being very much liked by Katrina's father.

During the party, it's very funny when, trying to dance with Katrina, "Brom Bones" uses a poor young woman to be Ichabod's new partner; the plan doesn't work, and it is Ichabod himself who ends up falling into a trapdoor on the floor.

And, finally, the part that made me laugh the most and still does is when, on the way back from the party to his house, the professor was super scared and, because of the intense noises in the forest, he almost went crazy from so much fear.

In front of him appeared the rider from the legend, who made him run around everyplace to avoid having his head cut off. But here is an uncertain ending, because the professor never appeared again after that nite.

It was also not known whether that rider was real or if "Brom Bones" was playing a prank on Ichabod. What is certain is that he ended up winning the girl, whom he married.

☁ Some reflections

It's a very interesting legend; although in this case they made it more comedic, I think the story is quite scary.

It's funny to see how the men fought over Katrina; I wonder if it was really like that back then, haha, because I remember that in those times marriages were arranged, so there wasn't much of that flirting or courting.

Do you think this Headless Horseman really exists? I believe it does exist, because it is told in various countries and there are many movies and books about it. Maybe there isn't definitive proof, but it's obvious that something is lurking around those parts.

I hope you liked my review and I would like to know which scene you liked the most.

See you in the next post!
